  1. I read that he called it a mild sprain. I'm guessing it'll be a non-issue going forward.
  2. I wouldn't mind unconventional, but I do agree with your statement about needing to be a no-brainer. I don't replace Grossman with a guy who has his own questions. I just don't buy the theory that he's hopeless. A lot of people said the Bears could never win in the playoffs with a guy like Grossman. I think what we're forgetting is that the Bears went to the Super Bowl with Rex Grossman in his first full year. This isn't a case of the team struggling to win 9/10 games a year while developing a QB. They made the Super Bowl with Rex Grossman. That very fact negates any notion that they can't win a Super Bowl with Rex Grossman. The defense was not at its best, and they were still within 5 points of winning the Super Bowl late in the game. This post loss apocalyptic talk about absolutely needing to replace Grossman is more emotional than logical. I think it would be very unrealistic to assume his next 28 games won't be better than his first 28 games. I would bet on his 2007 being better than his 2006, barring injury. I guess there's a chance weve seen his best and it's all downhill from here. But I highly doubt that's true, and I really don't see any realistic opportunity for improvement elsewhere.
  3. I like the phrasing. Sort of a rip on Cubs' management's often "rosey" view of their player's abilities. I don't agree that Wood and Prior's health are essential. It is possible to have a successful season without getting much from either. A 100% Prior probably makes this a 90+ win team, but they don't need luck with those guys, as long as the rest of the team performs. The rest of the team is a big question though. At least he used the phrasing "committed more dollars" instead of the oft-used "spent more dollars". The Cubs are committed to spending a ton of money, but they didn't really spend a ton of it for this year. That's a little pet peeve of mine.
  4. Garcia was fine for half a season. Can he play a full season? Garcia hasn't played a great full season since 2002. He turns 37 in three weeks. I don't see how he gives the Bears a better chance of winning next year than Rex.
  5. It doesn't matter what your intentions are, the result is the same. Nobody ever said the Bears are good in rain. The cold and snow was an advantage against New Orleans mostly because the Saints never played in those conditions. The rain is bad for the Bears. And the rain was good for the Colts? Hell, they're a dome team. I didn't say it was good. Seriously, go away. No, if you have a problem discussing the game, then you go away. What have you said about the game? You're complaining about how Bears fans are reacting to the game, not to mention, claiming I am saying something I didn't say. I'm not in the mood for arguing with a pestering fan of another team who doesn't have the common courtesy to interact appropriately with the fans of a team that just lost the Super Bowl.
  6. Wouldn't even consider it. His issues go beyond just injury "concerns". He makes Rex look like Favre in the stability department. He's always limping around, even when he does play. He might not be a high risk for disaster, but he doesn't have a ton of upside in my opinion. This would just be a grass is always greener move, taking on somebody else's headache. If I found somebody who stood a good chance of being a very good QB, I'd be fine to replace Rex. But I don't see it. A move like this has to be an obvious upgrade. To me, a guy like Leftwich is nothing more than a lateral move. It would be starting over with a guy who has at least as many questions as Rex.
  7. I haven't paid much attention to other teams this year. I really don't have a good grasp on the strengths and weaknesses of the competition. I did have a Cardinals fan at my SB party who claimed "everybody in the Central got better this offseason". I don't think that's true, but I was too distracted to get into a conversation about it.
  8. Nice post. That's exactly what should be happening, but I doubt anyone ever accuses Bud Selig of being a rocket scientist. Clearly Selig/MLB would not enter into this contract if they weren't going to profit from it. I'm not sure all you amateur economists know all the facts here Just like all us amateurs have no right to question the decisions of gm's and managers. Because we all know the guys who have the jobs are always the best guys at doing their jobs.
  9. The Bears wouldn't have been in the Super Bowl without Grossman this year. He's not ideal by any stretch. But Griese sure as hell isn't a sure thing for glory. I agree Griese wouldn't be better. But I don't think mediocre is ok just because we don't have anything better when we're going into the offseason now, and can try to get something better. I understand our options are limited, but I think Angelo has to look at all of those options and figure out if Rex really is the best option. I'm not sure he is. There's no obvious free agent option. There's no chance of a near-term solution via the draft. The Bears need to put 100% of their QB efforts behind making Rex better. Or at the most, put some of that into drafting a future QB in the middle rounds. But barring any miracle situation where they discover a diamond in the rough off somebody else's bench, Grossman is the QB.

  11. I'm not dying to get rid of him, but I wouldn't be upset about losing him. I just wonder who Lovie would promote to defensive coordinator. I'm guessing Babich, but not sure. Whoever he promotes will be running the Cover 2 no matter what, so does it really matter? It matters. The Bears aren't a 100% cover 2 team. There does need to be some strategizing by the d coordinator. my point is just that the overall defensive strategy won't change much. It's not like they're going to move to a 3-4 or something next year. No, it probably won't change. But that doesn't mean the defensive coordinator doesn't matter.

  15. Well, the draft is in April. OTA's will pop up now and again. Training camp is 6 months away. It's a lot better than going through an offseason after a 5-11 season. Yesterday hurt, but I'm much happier having gone through a meaningful postseason run than doing what the Cubs typically do.
  16. He was very very bad last night. That's just simply not true. He played well enough to win if the rest of the team wasn't so intent on turning the ball over and if the defense did anything. The defense was ho-hum, Benson didn't show up. No, Rex didn't have a good game, I'd call it below average. But he wasn't very very bad. I know people will push that as the official story, but it's just not the case. Benson didn't show up? He got hurt on his second carry. And he fumbled on his first.

I know people will push that as the official story, but it's just not the case. It is true. He wasn't good last night. I know he wasn't good. But that's different from being god-awful, very very bad and taking a crap on the field.
  18. I guess that's true, but it's at least as big as any other team's window. They are very young, and very talented. Nobody in the division has a better near or moderate-term future. There aren't many teams in the NFC with a better window. Maybe the Saints. But look at a lot of the other NFC teams (and you might as well take into account the AFC). The Bears are in solid salary cap shape, better than most. The Giants have a young QB, but their stars are all old, and some are already out the door. Seattle's once dominant O-line is no longer, their best offensive player is a soon to be 30 year old RB with a lot of milage on his tires and injury issues. If the Bears have a successful offseason, drafting solid contributors that can help keep the defense elite and improve an already decent offense, there's no reason why they can't be contenders for the next 4 years. I think their current window aligns with the length of time that we can expect Brian Urlacher to be a pro bowl caliber middle linebacker. Maybe they go 10-6 and go one and done in the playoffs. Or maybe they don't even make the playoffs next year. But they've got as good a chance as any NFC team to be the representative in the Super Bowl for the foreseeable future.
  19. I know that's going to be the official accepted story, but I refuse to believe that to be true. A 70+ completion percentage, a 68.3 rating. That's not taking a dump. That's not disaster Rex. That's better than what Roethlisberger did while winning last year's Super Bowl and he doesn't face anywhere near the scrutiny Grossman does. Rex did not have a good game, but he did not crap the bed either. the 2 botched snaps and the 2 completely inexcusable interceptions will stick out. I didn't say he was good. He simply did not crap the bed or lose the game for the team. Just last year a QB had a worse game and ended up winning. Rex was disappointing, and needs to be better. But he wasn't the disaster the general consensus is going to paint him as.

  21. The returns of Tommie Harris and Dusty Dvoracek should negate any need for additional tackles next season. If they are healthy. But that's a pretty big matzoh ball we are leaving out there if our starting tackles are Tank and Boone. I'd get one more to be sure. Dusty is healthy. And I think Harris is a very good bet to be healthy by next season. We aren't talking about pitchers with shoulder injuries here. I wouldn't mind seeing a QB drafted mid-draft this year, somebody to push Orton for the 3rd spot and possibly make Griese expendable (assuming Orton improves enough to be #3). Griese should be given a chance to take the job from Grossman, but only if Grossman fails to improve. I think Rex will get better over the offseason. He definitely did enough this year to provide hope for improvement.

  23. The Bears are not a wet track team, never have been. Cold and a little snow is helpful, but a wet track is not good for a speed team. True, but that just makes it neutral, because the Colts are just as much of a speed team. I'm not about to harp on the weather issue. But the wet track is definitely more of a problem for the defense, and with the Bears needing to rely so heavily on their defense, I'd say it affected the Bears more than the Colts. It's easier to make your cuts as an offensive player than a defender in those conditions, and with the primary matchup being Colts O vs Bears D, I think that's the difference. But again, I'm not scapegoating the loss on the weather. Indy played a better game and earned that win, weather or no weather.
  24. The Bears are not a wet track team, never have been. Cold and a little snow is helpful, but a wet track is not good for a speed team. Didn't seem to bother Hester or Jones on their long runs. I'm not in the mood for your BS the day after the super bowl. I'm not crying about weather. I'm also not about rubbing salt into the wounds, that's pretty pathetic and classless. I just offered an explanation for your question. The Bears d is built on speed, and the rain is bad for them. The fact that Jones and Hester had long runs in that rain is neither here nor there.
  25. The returns of Tommie Harris and Dusty Dvoracek should negate any need for additional tackles next season.
