  1. FYI, that was an 8 game slide. And the Cubs went from 3 games out to 6.5. And it was 10 of 11. They were 2 games back before then. Yes, they are still within striking distance and nobody has run off with the division yet. But that was some serious damage. There are now 8 teams ahead of them for the wild card. The Cubs have relied too long on the "it's early" claim. Last year they lost 8 straight early, and did it again 2 more times. There's no reason to give up, but I think it's important to remember that these losses all count and hurt. They can't just expect things to get better, they have to proactively make things better.
  2. http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/05/11/obit.soraya.ap/index.html Just another example of why this isn't a laughing matter. Breast Cancer is not a laughing matter. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with poking fun at Cubs players and their hitting ability and the concept of pink bats. Pink is a soft color, many Cubs hitters are soft hitters. Pink is associated with women and women don't generally hit major league pitching very well. It's a lighthearted funny situation. Nobody is picking on breast cancer sufferers, survivors or their families. I don't think we should make a habit of going around telling people what they can and cannot find humorous. Breast cancer is a terrible thing, but I've heard many cancer survivors talk about the power of laughter, and many of them even joke about their own disease. As long as people aren't going around making fun of people for having cancer, than they aren't doing anything wrong.
  3. I beg to differ. Lou is as much of a loon as Bowa.
  4. How has it been proven? In the standings. You can't just say it and have it be so. You say it's been proven, well show the proof.
  5. Johnson's was 20 and Lou's was 16. So what? They were both very long ago. And Johnson was with Baltimore for 2 years. His first year he improved the team by 17 wins and won the wild card. He got 10 more wins in his 2nd year, when Baltimore won 98. He was 2-2 in playoffs series with Bmore, then he was gone, when Angelos's overpaid bunch of over the hill veterans disintigrated. He did not have "several chances". He finished 1st or 2nd in 12 of 14 seasons as a manager, a lot of which took place before the 3 division and wild card format made that easier to accomplish. Lou was 1st or 2nd 8 of 19 times and had a lot of 3, 4 and 5th place finishes during the 3 division era. Davey also had a higher winning percentage. I'm not sure it's possible to say definitively which manager was better, but Johnson had more success. Of course he did. He coached much better teams. What did you expect from those Tampa teams: .500 record........playoffs?!? Lou had a lot of 3rd and worst place finishes in Seattle, with some of the most talented baseball players in history, and the benefit of a 4 team division.
  6. He chose to go to Tampa. And he wasn't any better in Seattle than Dusty was in San Fran (and both men won because of the ability to pencil in all time greats every day - and neither reached the promised land despite all that talent). Everybody likes to talk about how smart it is to change the makeup of the team by changing the personality of the manager, but what proof do you have that it works? Philly was a moderately talented team that struggled under Francona, who was considered a soft excuse making players managers. So they brought in Bowa and still struggled. A lot of people just assume that ranting and raving and intensity will equal great success, I disagree.

  8. With the D Rays he brought more a winning attitude then before. Now with the Reds he won the World Series. In Seattle he took them, year in and year out, to the playoff's, tieing the best regular season win total in baseball ever. More of a winning attitude? They won 63, 70 and 67 games under his watch. That's no better than what Larry Rothschild did down there. Yes, in Cincy he won the World Series, 16 years ago. And he didn't get back to the playoffs. He was in Seattle for 10 seasons and went to the playoffs 4 times, not year in year out as you claim (sounds like how Dusty claims his record looks). He had 2 of the greatest players in baseball history for 7+ seasons and the most dominant starter in the AL during that era. Not to mention he had the greatest DH ever. He had loads of talent to work with for several years. Then, he figured he couldn't get his team to the promised land and left for more money and a less stressful environment. He's 63 years old and melted down in Tampa.
  9. What did he bring them besides anger? They sucked and never took a step forward.
  10. No, but he saw the field for the first time last night, in the bottom of the 9th.
  11. I highly doubt Wood and Prior are stalling to get Dusty fired. And I doubt even more that Lou is the answer to our WS prayers.
  12. While Zambrano was facing the 2nd batter of the night one of the SF announcers said, "He's been avoiding the inside half of the plate all night", or something to that effect. Baseball people can be very dumb.
  13. no sac bunt. no run. that's about all pierre can do, and walker and aram didn't get hits. Wrong. He grounds to the right side all the time. That would have done the same thing, with the added bonus of a potential hit. Yay Jacque, doing something.
  14. No it doesn't. Trying to hit a ground ball to the right side (his specialty) makes sense. At least that way there is a chance it'll turn into a hit.
  15. I would like this trade, and your assumption is correct....15 years experience vs. 7 for Jones, so Dusty would probably view Conine as the better player. Not to mention, he's loves the really old guys the most. Dusty likens players to a fine wine, the older, the better. Conine would be as likely to fill-in for Murton as he would for Jones.
  16. Too early to label Harvey a bust! Montanez has an outside chance of being a decent player yet as well. (But I get and agree with your more general point.) Montanez is 24 repeating AA. He's got a career line of .272/.342/.403 and that is only because of the numbers he put up in short season ball at 22 and low A ball at 23. He was a top 3 draft pick and at best, might one day be a 4th OF. He is the very definition of bust. Harvey is not yet a complete bust, but he is a huge disappointment, so far. In his 4th pro year he has yet to do anything to raise an eyebrow. He's off to another awful start. Again, as a top pick, he's pretty close to bust material. He's not even worth anything in trade right now, let alone a potential call-up.
  17. I did not know that. Well, he'd help with platoons I guess. But the Cubs also suck against RH pitchers. And is there any likelihood of facing a string of lefties like they did before (really, I don't know, I've blocked that time out and don't remember who it was). He'd be the equivalent of a LOOGY, Ohman but much older and with no upside and 5-6 times the cost.
  18. I don't think it speaks volumes. MLB is a good ole boy network. Reputation and tenure is much more important to "baseall people" than actual ability and merit. And I'm not sure Dusty would get another job right away. In 98 the Cubs offense ranked 5th/7th/5th in AVG/OBP/SLG, and 11th in ERA (with only a 97 ERA+, tied with 3 other teams for 8th place ie, below average). How did he get 90 wins out of them? I'm not saying Riggs was a genius or anything, but he's a dude who took a fall for his GM's failing, moreso than Baker would be.
  19. I remember the same thing before we fired Zimmer, Rigglemen, and Baylor... I still don't understand what Riggleman did wrong. He had a talentless bunch of hacks and got 90 wins out of them one year. He was actually ripped for babying Kerry Wood too much. What was it that he did wrong?
  20. Ohman isn't worth a heck of a lot, but Ohman is worth a lot more than Conine.
  21. True. Also I googled Jim Hendry tenure. Fifth listing down gave me [url=http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20060408&content_id=1390030&vkey=pr_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc this press release[/url], which included this quite: Hendry originally joined the club as the director of player development in 1994 and was named the scouting director the following year. In 2001, he was promoted to vice president of player personnel.
  22. Hendry originally joined the club as the director of player development in 1994 and was named the scouting director the following year. In 2001, he was promoted to vice president of player personnel. This team is entirely of Jim Hendry's making. There is no more "cleaning up others' mess" excuse. He's been a huge part of this organization for over a decade, and in charge for 4 years. Before that he played a crucial role in nearly all personel decisions.
  23. How do you explain the 80's, and early 90's? I don't see the point in using such absolutes. It's not remotely true.
