  1. What are the current odds on today's announcement? Baker is returning, 1000:1. Hendry is gone, 10:1.
  2. I don't know, Shoop could have been considered a personal attack by Jauron on the fans.
  3. Great. Is there anyone on the team who doesn't have shoulder and elbow problems? I wonder when this was diagnosed. Man, he's a bigger whiner than I thought. "I guess I'm still held accountable for what happened in April." Uh yeah Jacque, you are. That's when the season ended. At least Pierre owns up to his failings.
  4. I want to know what influence McDonough will have. He's a marketing guy. Going with the popular pick of Girardi would indicate to me he's calling the shots.
  5. http://www.wgnradio.com/ I would guess WGN carries it, if not, http://www.am1000.com/ or the score.

  7. When they hired Dusty Baker, a guy with a reputation for being a whiny fool for quite some time.
  8. Yeah, one of. Not the reason. Not the focus. Your lineup and rotation determine what type of team you'll be, the bench and bullpen play a role, but have much less of an impact. If you win 90 games, your lineup and rotation are going to be the biggest reasons. If you lose 90 games, your lineup and rotation are going to be the biggest reasons.
  9. It would be pretty funny if the Cubs went from Andy, Jim and Dusty to John, Steve and Lou. Funny in a "you thought it couldn't get any worse" sort of way.
  10. One of the east coast swing games will be on NBC.
  11. Complete dominance. That's the best performance I have seen by a team I am a fan of since the 80's Bears.
  12. I wonder how well the powers that be got along with Grady Little in his time here. He seems like the kind of guy somebody would go after if they felt they had to win next year to save their job.
  13. I'm not policing anything, and the guy already apologized and called it inappropriate, so my guess is it's not really his opinion, he was just spouting off. I'm merely pointing out the difference between calling a player garbage, based on his production, and calling somebody human garbage. I think Andy is probably a very fine man. And I think his resignation was the honorable thing to do. I don't think he was a garbage president, but I think he was mediocre, and that should not be acceptable.
  14. Way out of line. You could have stopped with good riddance. Referring to him as "human garbage" isn't welcome here.I agree that it's not appropriate, but why is it okay for people to call players "garbage" and "trash" on here all the time, but not the team president? Personally I don't like to read that either. I think it shows a lack of imagination and lowers the IQ of the board. That being said, let's try to stay on the Baker thing for the rest of the thread and if you want to write more about this please just start a thread in rants about it. Thank you. I don't have a problem reading somebody is a garbage player. But I don't think there is much justification for calling any of them human garbage. There is a difference. That's a bold claim. You can backup calling a player garbage by showing his stats. You can't backup calling him human garbage without sufficient evidence, like documented wife beating, drug dealing, child molesting and so on.
  15. He surpassed expectations and was still not that good. People realize this is the best we could get from a corner outfielder the next two years, and we'll probably get worse as he ages. It was his 2nd best year ever in his career, and probably the best post 30 year he'll have. But we're stuck with him. My problem is not just the money and length. My problem always was that the Cubs settled for mediocrity, as usual. So what if he actually surpassed an 800 OPS in the first year. He's a 750 OPS player at heart, and probably will be as soon as next year. The Cubs needed an impact bat somewhere in the 3/4/5 part of the lineup, yet they went out and got a 6 hitter.
  16. His out of shapeness, 800 OPS against and 1.48 WHIP has made me dislike the guy.
  17. I would not be the least bit upset if Hendry passes on Girardi. He should probably talk to him, but by no means does he have to hire him.
  18. I disagree strongly. Tribune wants to win! Why wouldn't they? If you win it's a money windfall. They just don't have a clue how to win. Yep. Winning brings a boatload of revenue. Corporate committees like revenue.
  19. I really like Juan Pierre. He isn't the greatest lead-off hitter. But a team could do a lot worse, too. He needs to walk a lot more than he does to raise his OBP, but his floor is pretty high as floors go. He is a very safe bet to give you a .330 OBP with 50 SBs and a decent defensive CF. I like that. But I don't love it. Nor would I pay 8 million to retain it. I think in the short-term you might be right, even though as recently as last year he was below .330 OBP (and has been below 50 SB 3 times). But I think he's not far from having a much lower floor. He has already declined from his age 25 and 26 level of production, and seems to have set a new lower range of productivity. Plus, his prolonged slump to start 2006 was definitely not a fluke, it was a sign of things to come. He should probably be able to match his 2005 and 2006 numbers next year, at 30. But how much longer will that last? Another slow start in 2007 and he could easily end at career lows. At 31, in 2008, and the guy could be a complete noose around the neck of an offense, putting up sub .300 OBP and sub .340 SLG. Then you're talking Neifi territory. This guy's entire game is predicated on speed. He does nothing else. He does not hit balls hard. He is bound to get worse in his 30's. The question is how quickly and how far he will fall. Maybe he repeats his 2006 in 2007 (or maybe his 2005 becomes the standard), and that is bad enough. But he could be pretty bad, pretty soon.
  20. The fat and lazy, and unproductive, are coming out in droves defending Baker. Speaks volumes.
  21. Preach it. That's what I said all last winter. It's fine to try and improve the bullpen, but bullpens are shaky things regardless, because by and large, all relievers failed in their original role of starter at some point in time. They are second rate pitchers with limited abilities. Some can put together a nice career and make a pretty penny with their specialty. But these guys don't win you games. The 8 position players and 5 starting pitchers win you games. The bullpen should never be the focus of an offseason by a team that finishes near the bottom of the league, like the Cubs did last year. The bullpen never was, and still is not, the reason for success or failure.
