  1. The Cubs won't have anything close to a team similar to last year's Marlins.
  2. How does he pronounce his name? If it's pronounced the way the blonde on CSN Sportsnite said it last night, I don't think I could handle having him on the staff next year. Kwa-day I'll be thinking of Total Recall the whole time.
  3. I'd like to be a fly on the wall. Jim Hendry: What do you think about having Larry Rothschild as your pitching coach? Candidate: Hasn't the disastrous decline of your pitching staff been a big reason why you suck so much right now? Jim Hendry (this is the response that matters): Well, Dusty overrode a lot of what Larry wanted to do. or, Jim Hendry: But Larry is a respected pitching coach across the league and by the players.
  4. What extra money will be bring to SF next year? Extra Media Coverage Jersey Sales Anything extra that sells with a 'Giant name or logo' because Barry breaks/is going to break the record. Spike in ticket sales - (are all Giants games sellouts? I have no idea) Even though he this steroid scandel surrounding him, doesn't mean EVERYONE will be watching/waiting for him to break the record. They can't get any more media coverage than they already have. I doubt they'll sell many more jerseys than they have in the past. The only way he makes them a ton more money is if he gets to 1 HR away, then waits 10 home games before tieing the record, and another 10 before breaking it.
  5. ARod for Cabrera was mentioned many times this weekend. ARod is a $16m man right now.
  6. I think the only option is the Mets. They are the best combination of pitching and hitting. And our best bet is having him improve both pitching and hitting.

  8. Calmer, listen to the baseball men George is much less interesting than crazy, independent, fire-at-will George.
  9. The bidding process is blind. So the Yankees will have no idea when other teams bid. They'll have an idea of the interest level of other parties. Show some interest. Let it be known that you are going to bid, unlike in the past, when Hendry eliminated himself from talks involving top players early.
  10. What if you scored on an error? Outpitch and outhit are pretty useless phrases.
  11. ESPN is officially "Awaiting Joe Torre press conference". YES Network just kicked off Mike and the Mad Dog, who are saying they "are not allowed to broadcast" the press conference.
  12. He turned 29 during his second half revival. He's established who he is over the course of his career, as you state. He had an OPS+ of 81 this year, compared to his career average of 86, and 2005 of 84. He peaked at 26, like most players, with a 107. There's a chance some time in the next 3-4 years he will get back to that level for one season, but it's not a safe bet that he will in any particular year. On the list of most similar players, the most prominent name is Willie Wilson. Murton was at 103 this year, 111 for his career. The list of most similar players at this age are Kirk Gibson and Bobby Abreu.
  13. Subjective? The terms outpitching and outhit are subjective. They imply a group of individuals did a better job than another group of individuals, when in fact there is no proper comparison. Luck plays a huge role in whether one team beats another in any given game. An objective look at any one game could come to the conclusion that the losing team did not necessarily get outhit or outpitched.
  14. Chances they don't bring back Mussina next year? Not very large. They might not pick up his option, but talk is they'll be paying him $12m next season.
  15. How does he pronounce his name? If it's pronounced the way the blonde on CSN Sportsnite said it last night, I don't think I could handle having him on the staff next year.
  16. goony's just arguing for the sake of arguing with me. he hates words that mean nothing just as much as i do. I was mostly re-responding to 'Cuse. I don't like how this "Aramis loafs" stuff gets tossed around like he walks backwards every time he hits a groundball. I especially don't like how people act like no other really good players occasionally have a lapse of hustle. That's what annoys me the most. We've gotten to the point where it's assumed Ramirez is a lazy bum on every play, and it's just a matter of whether we are willing to put up with it. It's not true. Over the course of 162 games, he occasionally gives a little less effort than you'd prefer. Cuse brought up the either/or black/white concept of wanting great loafers or hustling bums, when in fact the either/or, black/white comparison is not appropriate for comparing Ramirez with any hustling player. He's not a sloth. He's an extremely talented highly productive baseball player. And the Cubs desperately need as many of those that they can find.
  17. If you had the right players, would Dusty Baker be OK as their manager? :D that team would have to be pretty dusty-proof. Yeah, if you forced players on him who take walks and have high OBP and had no Neifi's and had a high quality, healthy pitching staff. It would be more or less Dusty-proof. But since Hendry lets his managers influence roster decisions, there's no way to truly Dusty proof a team. You'd have to have about a $150 million payroll, with almost all proven veterans. Any kids you'd have would have to be can't miss types without a veteran fallback option.
  18. there may be hope yet . . . I just read that Piniella already said he won't take the Nats job because they are rebuilding. So why in the world would he take the Cubs job? The Cubs were worse thant the Nationals last year. Because baseball people, especially red-assed old school baseball people like Lou, equate winning with employing veterans.
  19. Make a run at him, if only to try and force the Yankees to spend more. Despite the fact that it's an absurdly high budget, they do have a budget. And money spent on this guy means less money to spend on other guys.
  20. The Beltran team probably would have won this year. Beltran: .275/ .388/ .594 Manny: .321/ .439/ .619 The Manny team would have scored many more runs, but with this scenario are we talking 8 Manny's on defense too?.....Cause that would be ugly. Yeah, it's the whole package, including 8 Manny's taking the last 6 weeks off. Beltran's OPS+ equaled Manny's career OPS+ this year, although it was slightly behind Manny's 2006 OPS+, which was done in something like 100 fewer plate appearances.
  21. The Beltran team probably would have won this year.
  22. Time for rampant speculation/interpretation. "I brought Joe in to please all the fans and media that are clamoring for him to be manager, and the only reason is because he was a former Cub who knows a lot of people in this organization. He was able to talk to those people and now I can move on. Hope he had fun talking to his former associates, because he's not coming back."
  23. What is production? AVG/OBP/SLG, that's what matters.
  24. It also makes it a little more likely that the manager would be willing to sit Jenkins, since you have the built-in excuse of keeping him fresh and healthy.
