  1. Who is Lugo an upgrade of? Brendon Ryan can run circles around Lugo defensively, and has hit better than Lugo this year as well. Lugo isnt better than Skip. The only person I can think Lugo is an upgrade of is Thurston, which is really not a big deal. He'll be a good platoon partner at 2nd base. Schumaker has an OPS below .600 vs LHP.
  2. You really don't know as much about the Cardinals as you think you do.
  3. oops Rumor is Matt Holliday refused to come to St. Louis unless Chris Duncan was at least 1000 miles away. Keep clinging to that. I was just telling you what the talks were.
  4. Lugo at SS would be fantastic. He cant play D for [expletive], and Glaus at 3rd beside him with his gimp arm would be even better. There are reports Glaus cant make throws to 1st base, but yet you just expect him to come right back and be last years Glaus. Your posts of doom and gloom for the Cubs, and roses and unicorns for everybody else crack me the [expletive] up. He doesnt need to be last years Troy Glaus. Ive never said anything about doom and gloom for the Cubs, but right about now, the Cards seem to have the better lineup on paper, and its pretty scary looking. Glaus will likely be nothing but a RH pinch hitting specialist.
  5. I don't think this is a great deal for the Cardinals. They've definitely made themselves better, but they paid a very high price for Holliday. He isn't playing all that well and is a half season rental. I think they would have been better off inquiring about Luke Scott who would have cost them less and is signed for more than half a year. You haven't been paying attention for awhile. Yea he still isnt hitting for much power, but hes gotten alot better since April. 872 814 and 976 OPS so far the last 3 months. I think Holliday is more a 850 OPS type guy, than a 900+. Good deal for the Cards as hes better than anything they have right now, but giving up your best prospect for a .5 season rental is always iffy. Granted they will get 2 1st round picks probably, but Wallace wasnt far from the Majors, and with Pujols deal up soon, they need to find as much cheap help as they can so they can keep him. He's also a very good LF adding to his overall value. Wallace's value was tied to his ability to be able to play a respectable 3b. My guess is that the scouts felt that he wouldn't be able to. He obviously wouldn't have been able to play 1b and who knows about LF. My guess is that the Cards are going back to the 2000-2006 business model. I would expect to see Holliday and DeRosa back next year.

  7. Correction here, it should say Shane Robinson instead of Peterson according to one of the sports radio shows down here. I wish, but all reports are saying Peterson.
  8. According to ESPN, this deal is pretty much done. Holliday for Wallace, Peterson and Mortensen.
  9. I have no idea if this site has insider info, or is just speculating. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/222994-as-jim-hendrys-world-turns-ii-cardinals-acquire-matt-holliday
  10. Haven't seen that. Sorry that you can't see that the trade opened up an outfield spot. So would murdering Chris Duncan in cold blood, but I probably wouldn't tie that to an Adam Dunn acquisition. Though Marty Brennaman would be suspicious no doubt. That doesn't make any sense, but ok. When the trade went down yesterday it was speculated that it was the first in a series of moves.

  12. How is that the first in a series of moves except by a loose definition considering all trades a series of trades? How does swapping out Duncan for Lugo open up anything, unless they trade Brendan Ryan and Bo Hart for Halladay? They are looking at Dunn and Holliday, who are both outfielders, and just traded Duncan, who was an outfielder. Seems pretty simple to me. Ankiel, Ludwick, Schumaker, Rasmus, DeRo, and Stavinoha can all play the OF. Add in the Glaus experiment when/if he returns. Couldn't they have traded Duncan because they had a massive logjam in the OF and need a SS? And because Chris Duncan's useless? There's also that and Ankiel has been even more useless.

Couldn't they have traded Duncan because they had a massive logjam in the OF and need a SS? Stavinoha isn't going to be on the roster long, DeRosa is going to be primarily a 3b and Schumaker pretty much only sees the OF as a late inning defensive replacement. He's made 3 starts in the OF all year. I know it's pretty stupid, but he's now 90% a 2b in Tony's mind.

  15. Apparently talks are heating up with Oakland for Holliday as well. The word is that the Duncan for Lugo deal was the first in a series of moves.
  16. Yep. That's what I said on the first page. People just flat out hated him even though he was raking when he got brought up. Ridiculously unfair treatment.
  17. but uzr says he's a badass So do scouts. And I think you need to watch that play again.
  18. I've heard that too, but it's just message board drama. Chris Duncan is the most hated player in STL with TLR a close 2nd. I would highly doubt that there is any truth to it. i seriously doubt that two guys who have been in baseball that long would be that unprofessional. I thought Ankiel was the most hated. Not even close. He'll never even get booed. He's "such a great story" and "such a tremendous athlete" and "looks like a ballplayer." Ankiel is my least favorite Cardinal though. I dislike him more than I disliked Duncan.

  20. There would be no way they would take on the money. Boston is going to be paying it no matter what.
  21. Duncan was just optioned to Memphis. There were some rumblings about it late last night, but I don't think there is anything to it.
  22. No what? I never said La Russa was doing it maliciously, just that he was debating it with the ump. Like Laurens said, you see something like that, it doesn't hurt to double-check it with the official. LaRussa knew it was fine, he was making sure that when Marshall came back from LF to pitch he actually had to pitch to a batter. That way he could PH for the lefty and Marshall had to stay. Probably made sure that Marshall didn't get any warmup pitches as well.
  23. After the fact, yes. In-game, he was clearly telling the ump "you sure he's allowed to do this?" no
