  1. Well, Rhee should be much more relaxed. 7 spot in the first inning for the D-Cubs.
  2. Canzler smacks another homer. That makes 13 on the season, with 18 doubles and 2 triples in 217 AB's so far. Will be interesting how he finishes the season defensively - I think he'll likely get the bulk of PT at 3rd in AA. IIRC, the reports on his defense at 3rd were choppy, but not horrible. No idea what to make of the guy, but he's really trying to force some attention to turn his way.
  3. There's a part of me that does wonder if Jay coming up to get tutored by LR would be a positive, as LR, unless I'm brain-dead right now, has been recognized for his ability to work with pitchers on improving their sliders.
  4. Jay had a horrendous June, but there's been some positive signs in July. I'm hoping this is just an adjustment issue for Brett.
  5. muschko's had himself a pretty solid 2 month run. only 2 walks in 23 innings in July.
  6. Diamond has had a pretty iffy July so far while Jay Jackson has had an eh month, not bad, not good. On the plus side for Jay, his K rate is up after dipping in June, and there hasn't been any substantial changes to the walk rate, so here's hoping he's found something. The HR rate is also down for the month as well. I'd probably go Diamond right now as well, more to give Jay some more time in the minors to work on things.
  7. well, i intentionally grouped 2-6 together because i could almost see an argument for any ordering of those guys, including McNutt at 2. I can still see a case for Vitters at 2, but I have Jay and Chris ahead because they both have performance and floor on Vitters, IMO. Who knows - maybe Josh finishes the year on a tear and changes my mind about that.
  8. I have my current top 15 as roughly 1. Brett Jackson. 2. Hak-ju Lee. 3. Jay Jackson. 4. Chris Archer. 5. Josh Vitters. 6. Kenneth McNutt. 7. Chris Carpenter. 8. Hayden Simpson. 9. Chris Rusin. 10. Reggie Golden. 11. Dae-Eun Rhee. 12. Rafael Dolis. 13. Robinson Chirinos. 14. Ryan Flaherty. 15. DJ LeMahieu But I don't really love my 13-15 right now. I'm open to pondering McNutt ahead of Vitters, because arguably, McNutt has the most upside of any of our arms, and his floor seems higher than Vitters. On the outside looking in right now is Lake, but if he keeps it up the rest of the year, he'd easily slide ahead of LeMahieu for me, probably Flaherty, and maybe Chirinos. In terms of draftees, I think I'd have Simpson and Golden top 10, Gibbs top 20-ish, Wells top 30ish (assuming he signs), Szczur top 50ish.
  9. pretty sure frank batista is a fastball/slider guy that can run it into that 92-93 range. Someone correct me if I'm off on that. IIRC, the slider was considered fairly solid. I'm hoping Nagel can give a nice run of it. I liked him as a starter, but even out of the pen, he had a shot to be a Justin Berg type.
  10. mildly curious about the structure of the golden deal because of his dad's comments.
  11. Canzler just keeps raking. Not sure what I think about him. Hard to know how real that power is (I mean, I don't think anyone expects him to maintain that ISOP he currently has, which at last check was around .260). The fact that he's been moved around the last year and change helps enhance his chances of reaching the bigs.
  12. very interesting pitching day. have we had any reports on how austin reed's mechanics look? IIRC predraft stuff, there was some concern with his mechanics.
  13. I don't have Martin's scouting report off the top, but the chances are high that he was given a quick call-up to AAA because of proximity. It's probably the same situation for Yohan Gonzalez.
  14. with all my excitement about dustin geiger, i never did check the roster for the AZL squad until now ... he's pitching? I don't recall any specific reports on his pitching ability.
  15. off the top, i want to say it was 300K? Don't recall exactly. The thing about the kid is that he was basically a raw slate. I mean, unlike a lot of Taiwanese kids, he only started playing baseball, IIRC, 4 or so years ago. I'd imagine he'll be given a fair amount of time to get it going, considering his intriguing upside. Big kid.
  16. I half wonder if Chirinos is being kept at AA to help work with some of the young pitchers there. That said, Castillo is actually having a solid season. If Canzler's power is real, then he is fairly intriguing as a ... Scott Spiezio esque utility player (although perhaps not as athletic, as Spiezio was a former MI in his youth, IIRC).
  17. not really news i guess, but not sure if people caught this http://www.baxterbulletin.com/article/20100701/SPORTS/7010328 from a week or so ago (7/1) where Dave Van Horn, Arkansas coach, had a blurb on Ben Wells. He says
  18. Off the top, the defensive reports on Geiger, IIRC, suggested that he wouldn't stick at 3rd, as frame analysis suggested that he would eventually lose the quickness there. He, IIRC, has a good arm, so I know there was some talk in RF. Part of the reason why a lot of folks thought he was going to college was because he wanted to play 3rd. Considering our 3rd base system chart, I'm all for it in the lower levels, until he shows he can't, or he surprises us. As for the bat, honestly, don't remember much, other than that he was expected to have above average power if he developed. Fairly excited about this signing, though. This draft didn't have that many potential impact bat types, and he definitely is near the top of the list. So far, so good. Here's hoping for Wells and Golden.
  19. I'd guess that the probability is high that we'll see one of them, probably Archer. McNutt may depend on how he finishes the year. Depending on call-ups, we may be looking at 4-5 on top 100 lists, and considering we graduate Castro and Cashner, that's pretty good. A long ways to go, though.
  20. So far, decent-solid start for Archer. He ran into some trouble just now in the 4th, but he was coming off a long break as the Cubs had a long top of the 4th. He managed to get the DP ball to help him escape a 1st and 2nd, no out, middle of the order up situation unscathed. The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx look like a pretty solid minor league lineup, with the elder statesman Limonta in the middle, along with Ackley at the top, Liddi, Peguero, Triunfel scattered through the lineup, and a couple other solid AA bats. It's a good test for Archer. So far, 4 ip, 3 h, 1 bb, 4 K's, 57 pitches. I love the fact that Brett Jackson forced Steve Bray to throw a ton of pitches to him and worked the count in his first two AB's (7 and 6 pitch AB's, leading to a single and a walk). Edit: Looks like Archer had a pitch limit. He finishes 5.2 ip, 3 h, 2 bb, 6 K's, 88 (P) -55 (S), 6:4 GO/FO, currently responsible for man on 3rd.
  21. With how he's performing in Ten. is it outside the relm of possability that he fights for a big league spot in March? Is it possible? Sure. I hope they give him a tad more time, though. The chances of this club being overhauled enough to be competitive for the playoffs in 2011 is fringy, imo, considering the limited financial flexibility. Maybe things change, but I think we should be targeting 2012, if not 2013, as the first year of our new window, and as such, I don't see the rush.
  22. I was always looking more towards 2011 in regards to Raley since he was making a transition to FT pitching and having to deal with significantly tougher players. Am I a touch disappointed with his season? Sure, but I'm not that down on him. Kirk was a HS kid. How he finishes the year is critical, but let's give it some time.
  23. KG offers up Brett Jackson as a possibility as the 11th best prospect in the minors. Well, he gives a top 10 and then a bunch of options to vote on, so Brett is somewhere from 11th-20th in this quick list he made.
  24. Perusing BA's minor league transactions, we signed Jake McAloose (3rd) as a NDFA. Fairly solid discipline in college, developed some power as he matured, although it doesn't seem to be "classic" corner IF pop. He was ranked as the 16th best prospect in the Coastal Plain League last summer. This might be better off in the draft and signings thread.
  25. Wouldn't be surprised if he struggled a bit in Daytona. Obviously, it's the first start, so let's wait and see, but with such a raw changeup, best case scenario, this year for him in Daytona, at least, relative to my expectations, is to perform akin to how Rafael Dolis did.
