Matt Murton is a pre-prime, cheap OF who's proven he can be a decent, cheap OF. We currently have no RF. Brian Roberts is a 32 year old 2B who's marginally better than our current 2B and makes $4.2m. He would cost the Cubs 2 or 3 good trading chips. Thus, Matt Murton has more value to the Cubs than this trade for Brian Roberts. Second, leadoff hitter isn't a position. It's an old timey way of looking at a lineup's composition (which really doesn't matter much when you look at it). Offense is offense, regardless if it is hitting 1st, 6th or 8th. Finally, baseballs don't travel differently in the minors as opposed to the majors. Pie's minor league career is a perfectly justified method of evaluating his defensive ability. And for what it's worth, 40 ML games isn't that small of a sample size. Congratulations dude your awesome! by the way roberts is 30 so if you r going to turn it on as you say make sure your facts are straight.

Being a "leadoff hitter" is not a meaningful role that a player fills. Jose Reyes isn't a good leadoff hitter -- he's a good hitter who bats first in the order. Obviously, he's the "leadoff hitter," but to believe this is a position/role that must be filled is illogical. And I don't mean to sound rude, but without periods and commas, some of your posts are a bit tough to read. Your not dont worry, but I corrected myself by saying just a leadoff hitter and he came back right after that saying that I said leadoff position which I didnt I think you're missing the point. Know im not I understand what you last two are trying to say, but UsSoccer said that twice to me soley for the purpose to make me sound dumb, which I corrected myself by saying its not a position, but there is a place in the order which is called the leadoff spot or leadoff hitter.

    I put 2nd best in the NL. I'd put Granderson, Crisp, Hunter, and Ichiro ahead of Pie as well from the AL. Matthews Jr. has a very good case as well. Yeah my bad Ping, misread that still dont know if I completely agree, but that sounds more legit

    Actually, Ping said that he'd be the second best CF in the NL. So after Pie & Taveras, there's only 14 others he'd have to be better than. With Edmonds and Jones losing several steps each, I can't really think of too many outstanding defensive CF's in the NL - can you? My bad Tim sorry miss read that, sorry about the You guys thing wasnt even trying to offend anyone by saying that, but what is up with Ussoccer giving me so much trouble for saying lead off position?

    really the you guys wasn't a nag on anyone in particular. again I just mentioned that I dont think u can make an assumption that he is better that he is better than 31 CF's already this early in his career.

    K well this is for multiple discussions. First off: The Murton thing don't be a jerk and be a smart alec because I said lead off position. he is a lead off hitter which would be nice to have. You cant factor in throwing arm to compare Brian Roberts and Matt Murton they play infield and outfield. Murton is a horrible fielder so don't try to tell me which I don't know how good he is that Roberts can be equal or worse than him. secondly: Sorry for saying you guys just know that a few of you use that with Murton every time there is a post about him thirdly: Pie he might be great in the minors, but you are making an assumption that he is better than 31 other CF's in baseball outside of Taveras that can not possibly be made right now in his career.

    Not really, those tools are there. His range and arm are as good as anyone in the game. Every new player coming to Wrigley will misplay them. I think right now, Taveras is the only one better. Maybe...I wasn't thinking just Wrigley, if just Wrigley you could be right. I still think he needs to make better reads though he over runs balls alot! If he overruns balls, that's not a bad thing. I'd rather have a CF'er that can overrun balls that most CF'ers can't get. The only ball I saw him overrun in the OF last year was a ball hit to the gap that was skidding on the ground. He was at full speed and did great just getting to the ball to stop it. He couldn't slow down to retrieve the ball, but the RF was able to pick it and throw it back to prevent a run scoring from first. K well than u obviously didn't see him overrun a bunch of balls this year and also get horrible reads on balls that should be routine to catch. don't get me wrong the guy is a good fielder and its his first year. Im just saying u guys are praising him a little to much for 40 games in the major leagues.

    Ok is it just me or does anyone who is trying to make Murton sound good only talk about his OPS from last year and try to make other players seem like just average? Doesn't that say "Career OPS"? All im saying is Murton hasnt started a full year yet...yet u guys are saying Roberts isnt much better than him yet hes a multi-year all-star and probably one of the best leadoff hitters in the major leagues.

He's basically Matt Murton playing 2nd. That is basically a ridiculous statement. Roberts' career OPS: .760 Murton's career OPS: .820 Roberts just steals more. Ok is it just me or does anyone who is trying to make Murton sound good only talk about his OPS from last year and try to make other players seem like just average?

Done without a second thought. murton's four years younger than roberts and has better career offensive numbers. obviously they don't play the same positiong, but including murton in a deal for roberts is too much...let alone topping him off with three other decent trading chips. if the cubs had a glaring hole at 2b, maybe i'd think differently. I definitely think people are over-valuing Roberts a bit. I think that alot of people on this site are overvaluing a number 4 OF at best on most teams to much!

    What's your opinion on Pie, based on what you've seen? Do you think the hype is legit or do we have another Corey Patterson on our hands? Right now, he's more Patterson than anything else. But, he's their best option in CF and until proven otherwise, should be given a shot to prove he capable of progressing. But, he has to work on shortnening that swing, centering the ball, and getting into hitter's counts. He fouled off way too many hittable pitches with one strike and then retired on breaking pitches or inside FBs. Defensively, he's one of the best in the game (2nd best CF'er in the NL). K I agree with everything u said, but "2nd best CF'er in the NL" come on isnt that a little steep of a comment. He played like 40 games last year you cant make that statement right now. Even though I know he is a good fielder even made some very bad reads last year.

    well I think that there is no question that he would be an upgrade over Derosa there is no question there. I wouldnt trade Hill out of those 3 I would say.

    Dont know if this has been posted anywhere, but just some other good news about it All times ET 10:03 p.m., from Amy Nelson • If Brian Roberts is traded to the Cubs, it's believed that it might not happen until the Orioles complete a trade for either Erik Bedard or Miguel Tejada. According to a source with knowledge of Baltimore's trade talks, the O's have had so much interest in many of their players they "have a lot on their table." But the relationship between Andy MacPhail and Cubs GM Jim Hendry dates back several years so if a trade were to happen, it could possibly be much faster compared to other clubs. Rich Hill, originally thought to be part of a deal, is currently not in the discussions. Instead, Chicago likely would send upper-level prospects to Baltimore. Among the names being considered are Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher, Felix Pie and Donnie Veal .

    I'm pretty sure Barrett was going to the Cubs all along in that trade, just that the A's had something that Montreal wanted and the Cubs had something the A's wanted, so it was just a roundabout way to get Barrett, IIRC Right, Barrett was an Athletic for a matter of hours. Even though we have agrued if Texeria in the OF would make are fielding worse, I must say I completely agreed with your comment earlier about not trading Murton for just a bullpen arm. In a package for someone better def yes!

    If the Cubs are not gonna play Murton, maybe they can package him in a deal for Byrnes. Sorinano, Pie, Byrnes is a pretty good outfield. If they would take Jones plus a young arm for Byrnes, it would solve the Jones problem and Byrnes would leave at the end of the year saving us Jones 2008 salary. Id be up for it in a sec!

    Look at your second post you said "Lee is past prime." the guys is 32 years old and a very selective hitter. With a hitter as good as he is its gonna be tough for him to drop off. Maybe his power will drop off from 2005, but hes a great contact hitter and the best fielding first baseman in baseball. Tell why then in little league baseball when kids arent that good they stick the worse players in left and right field. Not until highschool to they take right field out of the mix cause they put the strongest arm there. All im saying is its not that easy of a position to play.

    2nd rate among first baseman. Ranking anywhere from 20-9 among qualified 1B in OPS. 200 OPS points off the leaders. That is 2nd rate. You're far too generous if you think that's an elite 1B. Defense matters to bud! defense at 1b doesn't matter that much. bud. Ha ok how so?
