  1. Anyone out there know of any good Cubs bars in NYC? I've heard Standings in the East Village is decent, am I missing any?
  2. At first, I thought Bo Hart was joining the team... so you're not alone! Alright, who's Fuld??
  3. I think great is probably out. He might be effective. If they tender him what will it cost the Cubs? I am guessing the payroll is getting pretty tight already and the need for another OFer is more important than a questionable starter/reliever. When you routinely waste $2-3m on guys like Blanco, Rusch, Eyre, etc., I'd hate to make up for it by letting Prior go. I don't think great is necessarily out. HOF great, probably. But it would not be out of the question to get a fairly significant resurgent year out of him, something like 180 innnigs of 120 or more ERA+ type pitching. Can anyone explain to me, and I mean this in all seriousness, why anyone would want to give up on Prior based on his success in the past? I mean, pitchers get injured all the time and usually bounce back! (Unless your name is Wade Miller...)
  4. Or Piggy? How much longer can Lou tolerate the return of Felix Heredia (aka Ohman)?! And seriously, someone needs to explain this E-Patt over Pie move. This is just plain weird...
  5. Does anyone agree that this team would be better with the following moves: ** Call up Pie, send down Cedeno -- Pie is tearing it up in AAA, and we don't really need any more middle infield depth. I think the '07 Cubs are at their best when he is in the lineup, and he's got to adjust to major league pitching at some point. ** Send down Ohman, put Marshall in the pen -- I think 3 lefty starters is a bit much, especially when Marshall can't show any consistency. Why not slot him in the pen, where he could be our ONE reliable lefty reliever? ** Call up.....? -- Well, here's where I'm a bit lost... Is there anyone right now at AA/AAA that is ready for a bid at the rotation? Clearly, Guzman isn't it...
  6. I don't care what anyone says about him as a ballplayer, good, bad or otherwise... But listening to him call games with Chip made blood come pouring out of my ears. There was a moment during a broadcast when Ricky Gutierrez, just having been referred to by Chip as "G-Man", cracked a big HR, and Carter screams, "FORGET G-MAN, THEY SHOULD CALL HIM H-MAN!!!" ...and there was just dead air in the booth for a little while.
  7. Meh. I wouldn't take that quote too seriously. I'm guessing it's just a tactic to try and lower trade demands. Hendry will make at least 1 more trade before the deadline. It might not be a big trade, but he's going to add someone. Agreed, Hendry never shows his cards. I can't remember the last time he made a trade that I saw coming, other than the ill-fated Juan Pierre trade. The ones that I can think of, off the top of my head: Kendall, Nomar, A-Ram... all kind of just came out of nowhere. Unless the Trib disconnects his phone for money reasons, I think he's going to swing a trade for someone. Personally, I'd like to see him add another right-handed starter, and push Marshall into the 'pen so we at least have one reliable lefty in there...
  8. We'll just pretend that's what they're paying Theriot to actually be somewhat useful at SS. I wouldn't have had a problem with paying 6/3 of Izturis' remaining contract. Sometimes it's just better to pay someone to play for someone else than to continue playing him on your own team. I don't get it... why would Selig allow this and not the Jacque Jones deal? Selig didn't shoot down the Jones deal, Hendry did. I thought Selig/MLB shot down the money part of the deal because he didn't want the Cubs racking up more debt as they went on the market?

  10. Why Pagan? I really think he has proven himself as a valuable part-time / spot-start player. I hate to say it, as a big fan of Murton's, but he has contributed more than Matt has...
  11. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/fla/images/fan_forum/im_mermaid_history_061205.jpg You know, even if JJ didn't get traded, I think we on the board owe him a big thanks anyway...!
  12. It's really the ultimate revenge for 03, if you ask me!
  13. I just can't get over the fact that I didn't like the '04 team. They were as unlikeable as the '03 team was downright loveable and memorable. The enduring memories for me of '04 are Wood losing his sh*t and getting thrown out of a game where he lost his cool and blew it against the Reds, and Latro-- I don't even want to say his name, THAT relief pitcher absolutely imploding, giving up a long one to Victor Diaz on the Mets, blowing a snot rocket, and blowing our season. And that whole nonsense with Chip and Stoney? I can't fault anyone for voting them as the most talented or best team of the last ten years, but they certainly don't get my vote.
  14. Rotator cuff is easier to come back from than labrum surgery because there is more bone to attach to and more to work with in the back of the shoulder as opposed to the labrum which is what hold together the whole front of the shoulder. It's often tough to get full range of motion back after labrum repair and that greatly affects velocity because that comes from external rotation of the shoulder which is what loss of range of motion affects. Sorry to get all medical, but that's generally what the problem is when guys come back with lost velocity. Don't be sorry. That's exactly the info I was looking for. Isn't it amazing how you practically need an MD to be a Cubs fan these days?
  15. Bruce wrote today that with this surgery, and Prior probably done for '07, that he has thrown his last pitch for the Cubs. I know this is getting to be a sad, tired story, but isn't he still our property for a while longer? Given what we know he can do when he's healthy, doesn't it make sense to hang onto him maybe just a little longer?
  16. I think you are right. Murton needs at bats to get his swing back. He just doesn't look the same this year. Unfortunately for all us Murton fans, I think that move actually makes the most sense. It will start to unclog a crowded outfield, and I'm in agreement: he's not quite right at the plate. But is he still Iowa-eligible?
  17. I'm getting that impression... Anyone heard anything yet? If they do anything but send Ronny Cedeno down, I'll be astounded (read: slightly furious). Send Ronny down Cut Wade Miller Call up Guzman, Cherry. Done and done.
  18. I know we are all prone to pressism and caution here, but I have to think this is really a great step in the right direction for our guy. 91-93, a few nice curves, a couple K's, only a run in 3 innings. This made my day.
  19. I'm nowhere near a TV, but Prior's line seems half-decent... Anyone near a TV feel like filling us in? Is his fastball touching 90 at all? Breaking stuff? I wish I could kick the Prior/Wood habit, but I can't...
  20. Hendry....phone....now. Wait, what? What do those eyes mean, in this context? I think the chances of this getting done are slim to none. Bowden is a b*tch to deal with and always asks for the farm.
  21. Atlanta is talking with them, and reports are that the price tag so far is Chuck James, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Yunel Escobar. That's a steep price considering James won 11 games and Saltalamacchia looks like a serious catching prospect. What about Trot Nixon?
  22. Rotoworld: Agent Larry O'Brien said Wednesday that the Blue Jays are out of the running for free agent Ted Lilly. "It's down to the Cubs and the Yankees," O'Brien said. It's unclear whether the Yankees have made an offer. That could come with the two sides due to meet later the afternoon. The Cubs have offered $40 million-$44 million for four years.
  23. Sorry if this is a repost, but I love this rumor: c/o mlbtraderumors c/o rotoworld: The idea: Jason Jennings to the Cubs; Jacque Jones, Carlos Marmol, Paul Maholm to the Rockies; Brad Hawpe to the Pirates.
  24. Does anyone know if we can listen/watch this press conference over the 'net?
  25. Overheard • Lou Piniella is high on the list of candidates to be the next manager of the Chicago Cubs, which will be interesting if Girardi is fired in Florida because Girardi and Piniella are represented by agent Alan Nero. • Cubs announcer Bob Brenly has surfaced in talks about a replacement for manager Felipe Alou in San Francisco. Brenly was a player, coach and announcer with the Giants before making his managerial debut in Arizona.
