    Trade Izturis and Eyre to wherever and use that cash instead. Plus they still have more. Getting Bonds' production for that cheap is so insanely awesome.

    I don't think Bonds cares if his teammates like him. Yeah but wouldnt Z and Prior care if he's coming? >_> What if we got both Bonds and Sosa. :shock: I'd like to think the other players wouldn't be pissy about someone who's going to suddenly and drastically upgrade their offense and potentially make them a contending team. Besides, isn't he going to run into pitchers who have tried to "get him" pretty much anywhere she goes?

    I agree that Dusty's moves - or lack thereof - helped to finish off the NLCS for the Cubs that year. Your logic, however, in placing more blame on one position player over another seems flawed. Alex Gonzales bobbled a ball, which happens occasionally in baseball. Even D-Lee will misplay a ball sometimes. Is it not human to err? Moises, meanwhile, displayed an emotional outburst during the infamous play. It is also human to respond emotionally sometimes, no? My logic tells me that mistakes happen, and it's fine for people (baseball players included) to make them. However, it is also up to professionals (again, including ballplayers) to behave professionally. Therefore, one could blame Moises for blowing up when he should have just trotted back out to LF and awaited the next play. But it's all just water the bridge at this point, I suppose... I'm not out and out blaming Gonzales for what he did...I just said I think it was a much more glaring and ridiculous mistake than what Alou did/didn't do.

    I pinch myself and wake up. :D Really, there's not enough info there to make a choice. Who else is in the rotation at the time? How are they performing? How's team health? etc. What if you can use Prior, bring in a 3rd team, and get Miguel Carbera? Cabrera? Guys like him and Pujols are the crazy exceptions to the rule...of course you'd move Prior for Cabrera. Hell, I'd move Zambrano pitching the season of his career if it would net me Cabrera in the next 1-2 years. But by and large, no, I'm not trading Prior if he's pitching like that unless an absolutely dynamite offer is put out there. He's too young and too good and if he's pitching like that only another fluke on-field injury would knock him down.

    Poor Bartman. Yeah, Alou had a shot at catching that, but pretty much anyone would have been trying to catch the ball in the heat of the moment. When you're in the stands like that and a ball is coming down, you're of course looking up at the ball and not down at the field. Everyone else in the stands in the photo is trying to catch it, too, so it's not like he did anything wrong or unusual. And while Mosies' tantrum was totally unecessary, I can see why it happened given that this is the Cubs and they were that close to finally going back to the WS after almost 60 years. It doesn't make it right, but I can see why he got so upset after such a weird happening in that setting. People make mistakes, so most of what happened just happened because human nature was involved...that said, given how much control he had, Dusty's actions and lack of action are basically inexcusable and A-Gon bobbling that ball is downright ridiculous. Yeah, he made a mistake, too, but it was a much more glaring one than the ball in the stands and could have ended the inning right there. Moises would have only gotten the 2nd out.

    If I were the Marlins, I'd ask for Pence over Taveras. I'd ask for just about anyone over Taveras. He's terrible. No kidding. I think Willis is overrated, by Taveras is even worth the dirt on his cleets. I still think that the best way for the Cubs to try and get ARod, if he's even remotely available, would be to try hard for Willis and then spin him off with a reliever and maybe Moore for Rodriguez. And even if ARod wasn't available, Willis could definitely net you a lot with his name from other teams. Worse comes to worse, the Cubs are "stuck" with him...not my favorite choice since I think he has some serious DL time in store for him, but hey, I'd live with it.

    Do you think they will look for a lefty shortstop, or a lefty CF and deal Jones? They like Izturis a lot so I don't see them trading him. The latter is more of a real possibility. Is it a real possibility to think the Cubs will look to deal Murton and Jones and also try to get a bigger bat in LF and just put the LH-bat of Pie in CF? although, as a few others have said, if the Cubs truly want an impact LH bat they could just sign Bonds. It's highly doubtful they'd trade BOTH Murton and Jones. They're not assuming Pie will be ready on Opening Day. They won't sign Bonds. This makes me cry. I'd love to see a Lee-Bonds-Ramirez middle of the order. That's just too bad. Why? The offensive production would be epic.

    But why is he in the big leagues still? The reason is because he plays great defense, calls a game pretty well, handles a pitching staff well, great tutor to the young players, and he throws out base runners better than most catchers in the league. His defense is why he is still in the big leagues. he drives in runs with his shinguards. He actually generates W's every time he doesn't allow a passed ball.

    I'd be much more optimistic if we had more potential to "wait and see," but we don't. And spending like this doesn't preclude developing the farm system, so we could still have that if they wise up.

    I would have killed for the Yankee's lineup last year, too. I would have killed for 97 wins as well. People forget that the best pitching didn't win the playoffs. It's luck, timing and a lot of other stuff. But having a great offense is not a bad thing. Slightly above average pitching won this year. And that's probably why so many slightly above average pitchers are cashing in. But don't kid yourselves into thinking the Yankees were a bad team because they were all offense. They won 97 games. I'm not saying they were bad, or that pitching is the end-all-be-all...just that their collapse is probably almost all due to they fact their pitching was so deficit, and ours is much moreso at this point.

Would rather have written off 2007 and given our stable of 4A pitchers a chance to earn a rotation spot, then evaluate and address needs in the offseason. Sadly that ship has sailed(sigh). Was there even a ship to begin with? Outside of Hill, our current crop of youngsters ain't too pretty. I'm thinking some of them will improve, but do you really think any of them until Veal and Gallagher would improve THAT much?

    Exactly. It's totally seperate from the payroll. It doesn't mean he'd get a huge contract afterwards. Count against the payroll for MLB purposes or not, the Trib would be spending an extra 25 million this season. That money does have to come from somewhere. It's a pretty big company. I'm not sweating it. In contrast to almost everyone else here, I hope that the Cubs DID put in the highest bid. SPEND THEM DOLLAS AND POP THEM COLLAS.
