  1. I'd rather have derosa at 4.3 than neifi at 2.5. Honestly. Well, DeRosa fits more of the Walker role and Izturis is the nu-Neifi. My point is we've barely improved the middle infield, if at all, at too much cost. Oh I agree. Not much improvement. However if he can just be Walker + good defense then I don't mind this move too much. I however would have rather seen a bigger signing before focusing on such a miniscule improvement. . The problem is that ultimately we had only 2 positions wide open to seriously imprive this team, 2nd and CF (if Pierre ain't coming back like it seems), and now one of them has been wasted. On a much better team, signing a guy like Walker or DeRosa is a good move. The Cubs are nowhere near being that team. DeRosa is not going to make them much better, if at all. He's not the type of impact player they desperately need right now. Signing him to be anything other than a utility guy and maybe the 1st bat off the bench doesn't make him all that useful to this team, and it looks like he's their starting 2nd baseman. Now what? Jones isn't being traded, Hendry's latest comments indicate he's still in love with Izturis...unless it's as part of a packagae for a huge impact player, you're likely not going to be able to upgrade over Murton in LF. Now we're left with just CF.
  2. Looks like we are getting Izturis and Derosa next year up the middle. 2007 is over before it even had a chance to begin. Nonsense. That is silly. Why does it end anything? Because I think getting guys like Izturis and DeRosa indicate next to nothing has changed in Hendry's mind as to how to build this team. I have zero confidence in him finding anyone for the OF except for another Jones or Pierre-esque player and a couple of average journeyman pitchers. As soon as I see something that indicates he's adjusted his team building policy, hey, I'll be jumping for joy. Sadly, with the last 2 positions we've needed to improve significantly and he's made changes at, 2nd and SS, he's tanked miserably. Why is he going to be any different improving the OF or the starting rotation? With the exception of the bullpen, Hendry hasn't indicated at all he has what it takes to make the drastic improvements this team needs. Almost all of his trades and signings in the last 6 months are just staying the course and not rocking rhe boat at all. He's taking no chances on anything even remotely close to a big signing or trade.

  4. Wow, that kind of creeps me out. Heh, nice.

  6. Given that the company line (see the front page of Cubs.com) is that DeRosa is the Cubs' new 2nd baseman, this deal blows hard. Unless something drastic happens, our middle infield is shaping up to be Theriot, DeRosa, Izturis and Cedeno. They could have held onto Neifi and Walker for much cheaper and likely have the same terrible results. Awful.
  7. Great. Now the Yanks' already insane spending is going to go into overdrive because they've just been so hideously one-upped by their rivals, which will just push the Mets to do something similar on their own scale, which leaves the already gun-shy Cubs left high and dry. Mark my words, we've already seen the pinnacle of the Cubs' moves with the new Aramis deal.
  8. None of them. They will all make the team next year. Cedeno figures to be the odd man out next year. Nice. We've got one of the worst middle infields in baseball all set and ready to go. I'll be weeping with joy every time they generate runs, money and the ability to fly each time they catch the ball.
  9. Yeah, it's like it was almost on cue. What little goodwill he had gathered instantly flushed down the toilet. One of the few spots on the team that's open to being drastically improved? Feh, that's not Hendry's style, maaaaaaannnnnn. He doesn't play by the rules, maaaaaaaaannnnn. Ugh.
  10. I really don't see Girardi replacing Torre unless Torre wins them another ring before he goes.
  11. In a just world? Izturis, somehow replaced in a miracle trade by ARod.
  12. Just look at the frontpage of Cubs.com: "Cubs lock up second by locking in DeRosa" He's not being brought in as a bench player.
  13. If they get Soriano, I think he almost has to hit leadoff. It's been posted before, and his numbers are drastically better when he hits leadoff. For better or for worse, that's where you get him to produce.
  14. Wow, this is exactly the kind of deal I was hoping could be had with Wood...what a price! Same with the Miller signing...man, combine those with the Aramis deal and Hendry has suddenly gone from my most hated person to...well, not as hated in just a few short hours. Just so long as he doesn't think his biggest deals are already done with, he's definitely looking a lot better already.
  15. I'd guess that WGN will still buy the rights to carry games. The Cubs were on WGN before they were owned by the Trib; I can't see why they wouldn't be after. Would you want to broadcast bad baseball? No, but WGN has for decades. Without all the awful, horrible baseball they wouldn't be the national network they are today.
  16. I think Hendry refuses to go above 15 per season. It's over, IMO. I'm so completely convinced that it's an issue over a years and not the money. I'll bet Aramis wanted 6 and Hendry and the Cubs didn't want to exceed 5.
  17. I think the Dodgers get him. They love former Cubs these days and aren't afraid to pay for the players Hendry tightens the pursestrings for.
  18. The number of Chicago journalists and Cubs blogs rooting that this would happen are now suddenly infuriating me one thousand fold. IvyChat was smarmy enough as it is before, but now it's going to be insufferable.
  19. Heh, Aramis saw himself as the nu-Mark Grace and wanted to get that ring before the twilight of his career.
  20. I'd like to think that even Pinellia is smart enough to want to punch Hendry in the mouth if this is true.
  21. I'll bet the Bears get murdered on Sunday, just to make this sweet, sweet agony complete.
  22. Do they? I don't think anyone ever notices anything with us outside of obsessed White Sox and Cardinals fans. Considering one of the best young hitters in baseball hit the market, I think the baseball world noticed. Oh, I'm sure people notice HIM. I just think most baseball fans don't give a rat's patoot about the Cubs as a whole. Aramis might as well have emerged from a void.
  23. Do they? I don't think anyone ever notices anything with us outside of obsessed White Sox and Cardinals fans.
  24. I'm so lost here. The MLB.com front page story about Aramis posted at about 7 PM today makes the last minute talks sound even rosier than the article on Cubs.com: What the hell happened?
