    What a fat load. Let's not pretend that loud foul wasn't anything except blind luck. He looked like [expletive] throughout that entire at bat despite how Len is trying to spin it.

    I'm just at a complete loss as to what's happened to Aramis. That pitch he popped out on should be one that he annihilated.

    But IMO they were comically bad, so I could laugh, this team doesn't provide any entertaining or redeemin g feature. They are boring and bad. 2001 was pretty hopeful at times, but when you got Matt Stairs and Ron Coomer anchoring your corner infield spots and Fred McGriff would rather play for TB than the Cubs, you couldn't help but laugh a little. 2001 is probably my most memorable year as a Cubs fan for some reason (been a fan since 98). Probably because it came out of no where. Definitely. 1989 and 1998 were the same way for me. 1984 would have been the same, but that was the first year I really paid attention to baseball, so I kinda got set up for a let down.

The "fun" of the bad Cubs seems to have been lost since 2003. I don't like the "lovable loser" crap, but pre-2003 they were just SO hopelessly inept that you just had to go with it. Since 2003 and 2004 it's just depressing and anger-inducing when they suck.

    Pre-2003 this team was hopeless waaaaaaaaaaaay more often than not. I swear, someone would have to be like 10 to look at this as being as low as they can go.

    I'll watch MMA occasionally, but not often. Much as I'm down on the state of boxing today, I think I still enjoy seeing fighters work within a stricter framework better. I'm probably a rarity in that regard. I like how the restrictions on what you can do makes the "game" of boxing happen. Guys can't just haul off with whatever limb they want, or go for a tackle to get into a wrestling match if they are outgunned. They have to figure out how to beat the other boxer's strong points within the framework. Again though, I'll watch MMA every so often too. I'd call myself a casual fan of both; boxing still holds my interest more. I disagree with you that boxing is dead. In the US, it's on one leg now. But worldwide I think it would be a mistake to declare it extinct. Yeah, boxing is big in Europe, and especially huge in places like the Philippines, Thailand and Mexico. I'm definitely of the same opinion with boxing vs. MMA. Hell, I wish kickboxing had taken off instead of MMA.

    What has he become? I love the attitude that just because he hasn't turned out to be the "20 win ace" people wanted him to be then he must be useless as a starting pitcher. Brilliant.

    Bynum got savaged by the boo-birds that game, including when he came up to the plate. Castro got some after his 3rd error, and it was one that resulted from just piss-poor, inexcusable baseball. He didn't get anything when he came up to bat after that.

    Well, it would be more like Bosh and Rose vs. James. Especially if he goes to the Knicks (though if they end up with James and Wade, forget it).

    The owner of the Orioles hasn't made Cal Ripken Jr. Manager of the Orioles. What do I win? Wait, what? When did Cal ever make efforts to manage the Orioles? It should be obvious I'm talking about the type of situation Sandberg is in, not just beloved players randomly being asked to manage out of the blue. I thought that he had expressed interest before he started buying minor league franchises. Actually he expressed interest in buying the Orioles if Angelos were willing to sell. I would not be surprised if Ripken jumped at the chance to manage the Orioles but I haven't found any quotes so I'll concede that point. It seems like Billy Williams used to want to be the manager of the Cubs. Babe Ruth never got to manage the Yankees, though I guess they were never in a position to need the publicity of that hire. But the difference is Ryno has put in his time in the minors. Lots of guys wanted to get the gig handed to them, but it was hard to justify. Ryno has played good soldier for 5 years and is almost a lock to get an offer. Right. That's been my point regarding Sandberg; few teams are in the golden position (from a PR standpoint) that the Cubs are with him.

    Wait, what? Talk about being melodramatic. Finishing 83-78 was underwhelming and a letdown, but a "historic underachievement?" Yeah, right. The Cubs entered into the top 3 in payroll for the first time since average payrolls exceeded $10 million back in 1988. So yes....historic underachievement in not making the playoffs. The 2008 Seattle Mariners season was a historic underachievement. The 2009 Cubs, not so much. Yeah, I just don't see what was so "historic" about 2009. Spending a lot of money doesn't automatically mean that it's been spent well. If they had shelled out a ton of money for a bunch of young, really good or even great players and then ended up with 2009's record, OK, that would be historic. Instead it was an overpaid, older, slightly above average team that finished with a slightly above average record. Ho-hum.

    I have him slotted 7th, not 8th. Is there really such a huge difference between hitting him 6th and 7th? It's gotten to the point where it's beyond him simply slumping. He looks nowhere near what he usually is. Outside of a scattered handful of games where he made some "loud outs" he's weakly grounding out/popping out or missing pitches altogether he'd usually feast on. Moving him down keeps him in the lineup and allows him to hopefully work out of it.

    What? It's not like he'd be banished there forever. He's not some fragile little flower blissfully unaware of how bad he is this season. You can't keep a hitter THAT bad in the middle of your lineup. It effects everyone around him because the pitchers can approach the lineup knowing there's basically an automatic out waiting in the 4 or 5 slot.

    As much as we all want to see Lou fired, I just don't see it happening. Despite our criticisms of him, it seems like the majority of the fan base are either indifferent to him or still like him. I would be stunned if he took another managing job after this one, and I would be very surprised if the Cubs fire a high profile manager who is likely to end his career here. I'm not saying I agree with it, but between all that and them likely looking at Sandberg being ready to go I just can't see them giving Lou the boot before his contract ends after this season.

    "The masses" will never be screaming for Sandberg to be fired. "The masses" are nowhere near even wanting Lou to be fired.

    You called it. They really grilled him there. It really is ridiculous how easily lead around the sports media is in a market this big. Bruce Levine is at the top of the list. Every time I hear or read his comments, I feel like I'm listening to one of the team's PR reps. Levine, Miles, Sullivan. it doesn't matter. All of them are scared of Lou And the Cubs in general. Didn't they yank or suspend the press access of whoever got Lou to go off about Fontenot bunting earlier this season?
