  1. Yeah, that's my thinking towards him. His career window is likely relatively short enough as it is, and with the Cubs seemingly going with the rebuilding route for the foreseeable future, it really seems like Soto's value to the team would come more from the nice prospects package he could net them in a trade sooner rather than later. That's the problem with this half assed approach they appear to be using. If they are going to tank 2011, at least do it in a way to significantly improve your chances for 2012-2013. There's no point in wasting things like Marmol/Soto/Casto's still affordable seasons while waiting for other contracts to leave. By the time they can afford others they will be offering big raises to new guys and still won't be able to go after the big time free agents. Don't pay somebody to take Fukudome. Deal Wells, Marmol, Byrd, Colvin and maybe even Soto. Take your lumps now instead of prolonging them for the next 3 years. Totally agree. I'd add Gorzelanny to that list, too.
  2. Because if I wanted Lyle Overbay or Adam LaRoche, I'd just sign them. My way is cheaper. You think so? He's in the middle of arbitration years and has racked up some relatively larger RBI totals despite his generally poor hitting. I'd guess he's a lock to get a fairly large raise this season and then without any realistic 1B in the pipeline he will play a lot and be a near lock for another raise next season even without being good. Beats the [expletive] out of me; I was completely guessing.
  3. Except for that return where he was one kicker away from breaking an NFL record, Hester was invisible, guys.
  4. I'd guess the Cubs didn't want to trade for and then sign the guy, and only got involved late when they realized a deal was going to happen with somebody. They also might just want their name out there on big guys while settling for the mediocre 3rd tier guys they were after from the start. I agree on both of those points. Which is really disheartening considering all the money coming off the books next year. I'm really starting to think we're going to settle into a payroll around 100-110 mill longterm. Which would make AZPhil's comment about Ricketts wanting to run us like the Twins is much more accurate than being ran like the Red Sox. Hey, I'd happily take being the Twins over the last decade.

  7. Gotta stay away from those insane and deviant Cubs prospects.
  8. Yeah, I got that part, but not the "makeup" part. I guess the "makeup" of the prospects, but that sounds odd.
  9. Definitely. I actually wouldn't mind them shopping Soto, too. He's cheap now, but he's about to turn 28 and catchers tend to not last that long to begin with, nevermind ones who have had weight issues.
  10. If you can have him for someone like Colvin, sure, why not?
  11. I don't know what "esp makeup" means, but the rest is clearly saying that the front office guys with the Padres used to work in the front office of the Red Sox and felt more comfortable going with a package that had prospects they were more familiar with.
  12. How can any mortal put a a price tag on such effortless and transcendent ability? It's insulting.
  13. I thought you would realize I was being sarcastic, but apparently not. Next time I'll post it in green. Probably prudent given your reputation.
  14. Bears win, 34-26. It's in the bag.
  15. Why? They're going to win the division handily.
  16. As long as there is a 3rd team involved it should be pretty easy Excellent.
  17. The Cubs can find a taker for Soriano the moment they're willing to pay 75%+ of his remaining salary and take garbage in return. Don't be silly and think anything else is realist-....oh, it's BtB. Nevermind.
  18. It's amusing how many Cubs fans cling to this idea that Hendry is some kind of exceptionally bad GM instead of just being a typically bad one. So many dreams are going to be crushed after he's finally gone.
  19. *Phew* Those days when Cutler was worse than the receivers and the running game and the OL were dark indeed.
  20. He is better than OK right now. He is playing like a top 10 QB, the QB he should have been all along. I give Jay and the line some credit. But the line only gets credit for not being the worst in the league the last few games. When Jay got here he was expected to bring with him Pro Bowl talent. It's finally nice to see it on a consistent basis. So he's not the Weak Link anymore?
  21. It was arguably a bad call the gave the Bears a break, but there Bears were moving the ball well and Cutler got the 1st down regardless of that call. It's a stretch to say that call gave them the game. And I like how Wilson's argument has mutated to "yeah, Cutler is OK, but he's not as good as the three best QB's in football!"
  22. Yeah, it's less the money so much as the years he wants. I really wouldn't have a problem with 5/$125 or 6/$120.
  23. That was some seriously dumb [expletive].
  24. Who gives a [expletive]? The Bears are going to win the division. That last game isn't going to mean [expletive]. PRINT IT. Be bold, pussies.
