  1. Some people have been overreacting, but given the choice between Hill and Max Ramirez for backup catcher, it's blatantly obvious who the better choice is. It's still not that big a deal. Again, backup catcher...they're going to be varying degrees of garbage offensively most of the time, and Ramirez would almost certainly be the same if he got significant playing time. If we're talking about backup catchers actually being used as backup catchers typically are then it's largely a moot point. Ramirez might be "blatantly better" than Hill (and that's by no means a sure thing), but only in the context of talking about the backup catcher. They key here isn't who the backup catcher is. The key is whether or not Quade plays Soto as much as he should and needs to. If he doesn't and the backup catcher is getting 40+ starts then the Cubs have much, much bigger problems than whether or not it's Ramirez or Hill. If Soto goes down for a significant period of time it needs to be Castillo being called up to get the bulk of the starts, not Hill OR Ramirez. If we're just talking the context of a backup catcher getting 20-30 starts then ultimately it's really not going to make much of difference if it's Hill or Ramirez.
  2. If by, let's say, the middle of May Quade shows that he's not going to be sorta platooning Soto with Hill like Lou did, did can we stop all of the histrionics and hyperbole over the [expletive] backup catcher?
  3. Or hiring Jeff Gillooly to take out Hill. Even WSR realizes that Castillo being the backup is a waste if he's actually any good. Is he comparable to Hill defensively? I'm assuming Max Ramirez is NOT. It's pretty much moot how Castillo's defense compares to Hill's (unless he's just wretched behind the plate, and he's not) if he can actually produce enough offensive output to be a starter. You'll want him starting regularly in the minors instead of just sitting on the bench spelling Soto.

  5. given soto's injury history he's unlikely to get 140 starts, so if you have the backup playing 50 games or so and it's koyie hill, you probably should give a [expletive]. Why? If he's seriously injured then put him on the DL and call up Castillo. If he's not then Hill gets an extra 5-10 starts. Whoopty-[expletive]. Max Ramirez likely wouldn't make a whole hell of a lot of difference in such a small window.
  6. Sure, I'd hope they'd bring up Castillo if Soto was injured, too. In a perfect world I'd rather have Ramirez instead of Hill, but hey, maybe Hill IS really well liked and has a great rapport with the pitchers. I don't place too much stock into that stuff, but backup catcher is where you can get away with effectively having a team mascot, so I'm not going to lose any sleep if they have Hill there instead of Ramirez.
  7. And again, if he's only getting something like 20 starts it's really not that big a deal.
  8. Right. If Castillo is actually any good I want him getting regular starts, not being the back up.
  9. If they actually follow through with the stated plan of Soto getting 140 starts then who gives a [expletive]? The backup catcher not being awful with the bat only matters if they're going to be stupid and inexplicably "platoon" Soto, in which case they're fucked to begin with.
  10. Just spitballing... Perhaps the Bulls feel confident enough with the way the team has been playing and the position they're in that they WANT Rose to take these 3's in the hope that he gets better at them, or at least more comfortable/confident at taking them when he really has to? I mean, you already know what he can do inside the line, but the lack of a true #2-guard threat is going to be glaring in the playoffs, so maybe they're using the luxury of the position they're in to try and shore up his 3's as much as possible during the season. I don't know, but it sure as [expletive] makes more sense than assuming that Thibs and co. are just letting him do it just because, or are ignoring his numbers or are clueless about it.
  11. It's official... Rose has forgotten how to shoot the basketball. There is no cure.
  12. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR ASIK. [expletive] YEAH. Rose didn't want to rain on the big man's parade.
  13. One is never enough for erik.
  14. You argue like a nerdy 3rd grader.
  15. The "you ignore me but I won't ignore you" defense; almost as brilliant as the "I WANT EVERYONE TO BE NICE AFTER I [expletive] FLIP OUT BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE BASEBALL LIKE I DOOOOOOAAAAARRRRGGGGH!!!" defense.
  16. See? rawdog is the model as to how a "dissenting" poster is supposed to act. He just lays down the law and takes off and doesn't give a [expletive]. Take note, fools.
  17. You are beautiful, rawdog.
  18. This is awesome. Maximum spaz is engaged.
  19. Fielder's a lot lower than I would have assumed. VORP is position-adjusted, so the number is relative to others at the position. So, a player that plays SS that had Fielder's stats would have a significantly higher VORP than Fielder does at 1B. So, whlie his numbers overall are pretty good in comparison to the rest of the league, he's just the 9th most effective 1B. OK, that makes more sense than what I was remembering VORP as. Thanks.
  20. Except it's not a "select few." The very clear select few are the people that back you up when you go off on one of your misguided baseball crusades. And it's hilarious how you and huber keep crying about people being mean yet find it completely impossible to take the high road.
  21. Fielder's a lot lower than I would have assumed.
  22. Jesus Christ, you two are snores.
  23. Let's put it another way: Why do you think you get so many negative responses when you start breaking down the game?
  24. Stop pretending like everyone else is the problem when you're the one almost always talking up terrible, terrible baseball analysis.
