  1. I'm a terrible fan and Bartman is overplayed. He might be overplayed, but that's quite different from insisting that it wasn't a critically important moment in an historic game. Those are meatballs who do that. They differ from the meatballs who insist it's all his fault, but they're still meatballs.
  2. Aren't the Cubs only like 3-4 games behind the Sox in this godforsaken series?
  3. Nightmare scenario: Pujols opts to stay with the Cards for less money, the Brewers win it all and Fielder opts to stay and the Cubs plunge further down the shame spiral.
  4. Yeah, this just generally sucks for the Cubs since it makes it that much less likely that Pujols won't be a Cub AND Prince is now going to be even more expensive. Fine, give me Prince and Reyes this year and Kemp after 2012.
  5. Yeah including Soriano and Grabow, but ignoring Pena seems really strange. Pena is probably the Cubs' best trade chip, unless they make Soto available. 760 OPS so far this year after last season's 732. I'm not so sure he's much of a chip. That OPS is dragged down by his awful April, where he put up .159 .289 .175 .464 with no HR and only 5 RBI. Since then he had a May where he went .258 .402 .517 .919 with 7 HR and 19 RBI and June where so far he's posted .226 .344 .509 .853 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. There's a pretty decent chance that if he's still putting up similar numbers into July he could be very appealing outside of that stinky April start.
  6. To be perfectly blunt, I'm not surprised at all that none of the Latino players are in it and I'm REALLY surprised/impressed that Byrd is in it.
  7. And sad to say it, but I'm really not surprised they got as few players as they did.
  8. Kosuke's an interesting trade option. He plays a traditional power position, but obviously doesn't provide that much power. However, he gets on base like crazy and plays decent defense or better (even though UZR hates him this year). Will teams value the OBP/defense combo or claim he has little to no value because he doesn't hit for power? I think the key to getting a good return on Kosuke is how much of the remaining money for this season the Cubs would pick up.
  9. Really cool of them, but what's up with the bizarre way they shot Dempster? It's like he was sprayed by a skunk and nobody wanted to get near him.
  10. He was reaching over the railing after the fact. The actual "interference" that prevented Alou from catching the ball occurred because Alou was reaching over the railing into the stands. After the catch isn't made Bartman's momentum is still carrying him forward and his hands end up over the railing.
  11. That was Winger, and everything he does is creepy.
  12. On any given pitch there is nothing wrong with swinging at something you can drive. But over the course of a game and a season it is absolutely necessary to not be a bunch of overaggressive morons. The Cubs are a bunch of overaggressive morons, and have been throughout virtually the entire Hendry era (with the exception of portions of the Piniella era). And nowhere did I say that that's a good or necessary thing over the course of the season. My issue is zeroing in on a single half-inning where it WASN'T an example of being aggressive automatically being a bad thing as if that was the epitome of what's wrong with the Cubs.
  13. The circle of life.
  14. Well, yeah, which is why you saying that they "created" the story right before doesn't make much sense. It's a memorable story because of how unique it and the larger context was/is, regardless of ESPN.
  15. yes, 17 year olds are apparently children. Yeah, to WSR a 20-year-old mentioning a 17-year-old is just creep-city, dude.
  16. What? He's playing the most difficult of the positions between 1B and 3B to play defensively. It doesn't make any sense to panic and move him to 2B or 3B instead when he's this young and it looks like he's got the ability to play SS. If ultimately he can't hack it there after a few years you move him to 2B or 3B and he's moving to an easier position to play. Besides, what's so unique about 2B or 3B that he'd be missing out learning by staying at SS for the time being?
  17. Yeah, but, like, who cares? He isn't helping the Cubs this year - no one is - and his $18 million next year could almost certainly be put to better use. Unless you believe he's going to reverse course next year (which is not inconceivable given how dominant he was in the second half last year), I just can't be too upset about losing Z's hypothetical production for 2012. Except that the Cubs aren't likely to free up all of that $18 million unless they take back essentially nothing for him. And his salary wouldn't almost certainly be put to better use since the pitching FA class isn't nearly as good as the offensive one. Sure, they could theoretically pick up another impact bat if they were willing to take the hit return-wise and free up all of his salary...but then they leave a gaping hole in the pitching rotation that they likely can't fill with anyone as good as Zambrano. Trading him just to free up money simply isn't very realistic right now and causes more problems than it solves even if it could be done.
  18. "Pedophiles anthem?"
  19. I would assume it stems from how many player/managers they had back in the day. In fact, has there always been a manager role with professional baseball? I wouldn't be surprised if it just evolved out of a captain-like role from amongst the players on the team.
  20. The Cubs are darning their socks and dying in a church, I guess.
  21. I think Dusty even kinda hates himself. There's nowhere that [expletive] story ever happened, and he knows it.
  22. Yeah, it seems odd to use it like it's a trump card when he was being yanked between the starting rotation and the bullpen.
  23. Well, that's the main thing I was referring to when bringing up Dusty's inaction. He didn't go out there (or send the pitching coach) to try and buy some time to calm things down and talk to his pitcher, much less pulling him because he had pitched more than enough.
  24. No, not fans wearing suits. Fans wear almost nothing but hideous things. I meant coaches and managers.
