  1. But he's fast. Need that speed at the top. The fact he can't get on base is immaterial. Check out his sponsor on BF: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/campato01.shtml Does he know that's not a compliment? I'd like to think he does, though it's like night and day with those sponsorships in terms of people getting it.
  2. Oh, I totally agree he's afraid of the wall. I understand why he is; he's not really an OF and he doesn't want to get hurt. It's easily the worst part of his OF defense, as you said. I just am always amused at how it's blown out of proportion and seemingly has turned into this thing where people think he's just garbage across the board out there.

  4. I couldn't believe the terms when I heard them. The guy isn't even top 5 at his position. My favorite part was a friend of mine who is a diehard Phillies fan justifying it by saying that "Howard was owed it for all the cheap years he gave them." Brilliant.
  5. [expletive] STOP WITH THE CASTRO BATTING #3 [expletive]. Do Aramis and Pena have to have 3-HR games each to make it abundantly clear that they're fine holding down the 3-4 spots? What the [expletive] about Campana screams that he needs to be batting anywhere besides #7 or #8? Oh, right; he's fast and he made a nice catch yesterday.
  6. Yeah, that Howard deal really sort of [expletive] the bed for everyone. What an awful, awful contract.
  7. Your right he doesn't "quit" on a ball 20 feet from a wall, he just slows down to a slow trot on anything hit toward a wall so he doesn't get there to crash into the wall and plays it after it hits the ground or the wall. Sure, why not? You are confused about why an OF would want to try hard to catch a batted ball on the fly? Not at all. Any player is going to avoid crashing into a wall if they can. And BtB description is ridiculous because he's trying to make it sound like Soriano is acting like he's on the verge of slamming into the wall left and right instead of, y'know, playing a ball off the wall like everyone else does. It's just indicative of the irrational hatred the guy gets; if he's not slamming into the wall or diving for balls every other game he's worthless and a coward.
  8. So why not just wait and cut him when he sucks? Because first, you have to waste a year finding out he's terrible. Either he's hurt and you have a bench player all year or he's just terrible in your lineup. Between that and the dead money after cutting him you could very well lose more than 27 million. Eh, so be it. I'd rather do that than dump him now for the sake of mediocre LF production that is slightly more cost-effective.

  10. But how much savings are really that realistic? It's difficult to see a scenario where moving Soriano isn't essentially just paying him to play somewhere else. Seems like it would be a PR move for the meatballs and the Kaplans of the world more than anything. Trust me, I'd love to watch Soriano have the game-winning hit to win a title just so Kaplan would hopefully kill himself, but I don't think it's impossible to find a taker for him at 3/27. I know he's a glaring exception, but Vernon Wells had his entire horrific contract absorbed. I'm not saying don't do it if the opportunity is there...I just don't think it's very likely and am more concerned that a "drive" on the part of the organization to move him ASAP is just an appeasement PR move more than anything that they'll take a bath on. It's not like they NEED to move Soriano. There's a ton of money coming off of the books after this year and the next and he's not blocking anyone in their system and there are no obviously better FA OF candidates out there available soon (or would be blocked by him).
  11. Exactly. People irrationally hate Soriano because of how much money he makes, so much so to the point that they can't (or refuse to) see that dealing him just to deal him creates yet another hole in the lineup that they would have to fill. Just cut him when he stops being useful. I think a good deal of the hatred of Soriano is completely rational. It's the need to have him gone at all costs that is irrational. Yes, that's irrationally hating someone, gooney.

A lot of Cubs fans seem to believe that theres no middle ground between superstar and bust. Yup. There's plenty of reasons to dislike Soriano as a player or not be a fan of him...and then there's the people who boo him every single time he strikes out.
  13. Sounds pretty good. Thanks for the review.

  16. He was also BA's #1 GM candidate last March. Count me as in. Yeah, Hahn's been pretty well regarded around baseball for a while now. I'd be a big fan of getting him.

  18. Nice, our very own Guancous.
  19. I don't remember how long his contract is, but my hunch is that he's basically a caretaker until Kerry Wood retires as a player and moves into broadcasting. I'd bet money that Wood replaces Brenly (and that Kerry will be, unfortunately, awful). I wouldn't be surprised to see Dempster in the radio booth once he ultimately retires. How good or bad that would be all depends on how much he reigns in the Harry impersonation.
  20. It's more the "20 feet" thing. That's goofy.
  21. Yeah, what an idiot for not wanting to leap/run into a [expletive] brick wall.
  22. Hey, he's not dead yet.
  23. Patience.
