  1. Personally, I can't stand it because it's paced like a funeral dirge, I can't stand Vedder's muttered crooning, and it's filled with some really torturous and badly written lyrics. "Go Cubs Go" is very cheesy and simplistic, but it at least works as a song, especially as one people can sing along to. Vedder's song only "works" that way just because of the chorus.
  2. Doesn't matter. Too many of the fewer teams can spare better packages than what the Cubs can offer. The Cubs have a much better chance pursuing the money route, since they potentially have more money to spend than almost any other team in baseball.
  3. To be fair, he said they "MAY not be in contention for 5 years."
  4. Other teams have more prospects. Trading for Jimenez would be more of a challenge than signing Wilson, I think. Agreed. I much prefer the idea of trying to sign Wilson instead of trading Jimenez. I was just countering WSR's apparent conclusion that the Cubs have a better chance of getting Jiminez via trade as opposed to signing Wilson.
  5. Right, and other teams could trade for Jimenez. Or the Rockies decide not to move him now. Your point?
  6. Hopefully still pitching for the Cubs and kicking ass.
  7. You need money to sign a FA. The Cubs have money. If they want to sign Wilson they can. The end.
  8. Guys, I just found something INCREDIBLY embarrassing. In 2008 the Reds finished 5th of 6 in the NL Central with a miserable 74-88 record, yet here is a video of ACTUAL CELEBRATION during that season after a walkoff win. Please note the excessive cheering and jubilation, the humiliating fireworks, some kind of embarrassing song playing in the background AND the video scroll lit up to say "WE WIN!!!" In fact, just the very existence of this celebratory video is a horrible blow to the dignity of Reds fans everywhere. I can only imagine and hope that the Cleveland Indians fans in attendance properly chastised the Reds fans for their embarrassing behavior.
  9. I'm pretty sure that if I go see any MLB team win a game at home there's going to be some kind of celebration for the fans at the end. Hell, a lot of them involve fancy video screens and fireworks and mascots and the like regardless of how bad the team is overall, so I think the Cubs are pretty safe in there "some people are singing and sort of dancing, kinda"-routine. Y'know, if you're REALLY worried about being embarrassed.
  10. Why should any of us care what a Reds fan thinks about Cubs fans?
  11. They can still sign him for 2012 if they trade him.
  12. I will admit that my opinions about the song are biased. I'm off the age that my first real memories of the Cubs were watching games with my dad when they had a shot in 1984 (when I was 5) and they broke out the song right around then, so it's burned into my brain because of that. They dropped it within a few years, but I was happy to hear it back because of the personal connection.
  13. Who was saying it was a good song? If anything, you made a good point on behalf of the people arguing for it. It's supposed to be dumb and cheesy and easy to remember.
  14. I don't get your point. It's probably pretty dumb.
  15. I would assume Baker would get most of the starts. If they want to hold on to him I'm sure they'd like to see if he can improve his hitting against RH pitchers (doubtful).
  16. But neither were really top prospects. Sneaky's point is that guys with pedigrees that have surpassed their results so far, and are young enough to still be in/entering their primes are the inefficiency. Ah, gotcha.
  17. Older, yes, but weren't both effectively considered productive platoon/utility guys at best before they became full time starting 2B for the Cubs?
  18. Don't forget Carlos Quentin. I don't think the WSox gave up much for him and he's raking. This is one thing that Kenny Williams does extremely well (Quentin, Humber, Thornton). Obviously there are other examples as well (Josh Hamilton, Bobby Abreu--although I think he was an int'l signing, not a draftee). We tried it and got a few years of terribleness from Thomas Diamond. Thanks Hendry! Todd Walker, Mark DeRosa.
  19. I wouldn't be opposed to signing Ethier, but part of the reason I prefer Kemp is that he's younger. He'd be, what, 28 if he started the 2013 season with the Cubs? I think Ethier would be 31. Kemp's defense isn't something to ignore, and ultimately I'd prefer him to end up in LF.
  20. Why even go as far back as Bradley and Patterson? You've got tons of complaints from last year and this year about how "it looks like they don't care." Meatballs gonna meatball.
  21. Why pass on someone like Wilson? Sign him after this year and then use the money freed up by Demp and Z after 2012 to snag at least one of the guys on that list (plus Kemp. ALWAYS KEMP).
  22. Hah! This is serious? Because of course it is.
  23. Yeah! We're only 18 games under .500 now!
