The whole 4chan "let's make this a fake thing to pwn the libs, 'whoops', now alt-right people are doing it ironically/seriously" started in 2017. But Milo and co. started it back in 2015 as this intentionally nebulous dog-whistle along the lines of, "white guys chill like this" or whatever the hell goes on in their lizard brains. It's been festering for a while. Sure, but it hasn't really been mainstream for a long time. It wasn't a focus of national media until somewhat recently -- the person sitting behind Brett Kavanaugh comes to mind -- and most recently, the NZ shooter. It's not unreasonable for the average person to not know that it's a white power symbol and to be surprised that someone would do that on live television at a Cubs game. And multiple people in the White House doing it, too. I get what you're saying, and others who somehow mercifully missed this. I guess we're just at the point where more and more people are going to realize what's changed, and ideally knock it off.
