  1. LIAR.
  2. Take it up with Theo. It wasn't my first choice on how to run an organization, but it's what we've got. No, it's not. *checks 25-man roster* Yeah, we do. Again: really bad, even for you.

  4. He regretted giving in to the pressures of always being in on every free agent and constantly playing the arms race battle with the Yankees. He regretted being so heavily veteran free agent focused. There's some middle ground here people between the obscenely stupid everybody from within scenario and what the Red Sox started doing in their desperation to stay on top and compete with the Yankees every single minute. Agreed. But I don't think Theo's interpretation of that middle ground involves the Cubs making any moves for impact, prime-year players this coming offseason. I wouldn't at all be surprised if it's the same flow-chart as last year: Do we have a young, potentially core player ready to take the spot? If no, is there someone cheap available that we might be able to flip into some trade value at the deadline? If no, then find some organizational AAA roster fill with a tiny hint of upside and just let them take up space. Which is setting yourself up for failure more often than not.
  5. His last name is a nickname. He's very efficient.
  6. So then why the hell do you have Bryan LaHair as the starting LF? Well, we pretty much can guarantee Soriano isn't sticking around. And I've looked at FA for next year, we ain't signing Hamilton. Lee is old as hell and can't play the field anyway. Melky? Pay way up for him at this point? I can't see it. Upton? Sure, if he comes cheap enough, which I doubt. Maybe Delmon Young? Buy low guy anyway? Personally, I think we'd be better off with the LaHair/Gomes platoon I had. Personally I think it is asinine to pencil in LaHair as your starting LF on Opening Day, on purpose. Fine. So why not offer up someone else for discussion, instead of just criticizing my option? Alfonso Soriano.

NO, NO MIDDLE GROUND. HE'S EITHER GOING TO FARM A LUSCIOUS CROP OF YOUNGSTERS OR TRADE THEM ALL AND SPEND LIKE HE'S THE DUBAI OF BASEBALL. THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION.
  8. That's bad, even for you, Kyle. Yup, the only options are going homegrown or "going nuts in the trade market." Stellar work.
  9. Apparently to the point where the Cubs are going to have a sub-$60 million payroll. Which is just stupid.
  10. Because I didn't care about the rest. I took that interview as an obviously tongue-in-cheek response/hypothetical, because God help us if it isn't. You cannot strive to make a team like that because you WILL fail at least 9 times out of 10. You took that as tongue in cheek? It seemed completely honest to me, and it completely explained everything he's done so far as president of the Cubs. Why wouldn't it explain the near future? Because you can't actively try to build a team that way because it fail WAY more often than not. It's a waste of the resources of the Chicago Cubs and it's a waste of the ability of our FO because it's such an absurdly one-sided, narrowly focused approach to building a baseball team. Seriously, if the pitch that brought Theo and co. here was allowing them to go crazy and try to build a team that way then Ricketts failed. Miserably. Fortunately that article makes it clear that this is not the case when HE HIMSELF SAID IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE.

You cannot strive to make a team like that because you WILL fail at least 9 times out of 10. Sounds like a sound discussion technique. I didn't read it, so why am I going to respond to it? Seriously, you can't possibly think what he was talking about in that interview was sound OR realistic.
  12. but is shanghai-ing them in AAA the answer, especially when you're obviously rebuilding? No, there's a nuance involved. If you want to stockpile prospects at the deadline, that's not the worst outcome. Use the rest of the season to evaluate, then decide what areas you want to try to fill from within, and use the rest to get assets that can potentially fill those holes. Use your haul from dealing Dempster/Garza to get you Headley, use Vitters and Jackson to make a run at King Felix. Those are rudimentary examples, but you get the idea. There's more than one avenue with prospects, not just Buy and Hold. Right. A strong system allows to have a multi-front attack on building a team, not just expecting/hoping/praying that you develop all or most of your key players internally.

  14. I think by next season, Rizzo has helped ease some of the concerns about him. To me, the only 3 you're breaking in are Brett, Vitters, and Castillo. Granted, I actually searched for a few "veterans" to provide some semblance of stability, but didn't really see any that made sense for us. Could definitely see us having a few more stopgap guys than what I have listed. As for the pitching, other than Turner, in this case, everyone else has shown an ability to be decent at the big league level. Added a 6th guy, thought about adding a 7th or 8th as well, but I figure we'll do that on minor league deals. My point though, is I think they want to suck again. And the 2 years of extremely high picks and huge IFA budgets are the reason. That alone should give us plenty of ammo to use for trades and finding an impact guy or two for us as well. And I think the Soriano contract, though through 2014 will be accounted for, by doing this, as paid in full with 2013 budgeted payroll. I just...I don't...what the hell kind of operation do you think they're running? They're not sorcerers; you can't rely on prospects that much. I don't disagree, but Theo has hinted that that's exactly what he wants to do. No, it's not. Having a strong farm system doesn't equate to building a team that relies almost completely on prospects.

  16. Yeah, it really is baffling the sheer number of people who seem convinced that so many prospects are going to break the right way for the Cubs.
  17. I called him out on twitter last night for this crap. Good thing you never indulge in such hyperbole here.
  18. The "youngsters can still struggle" even if they're making moves to improve at positions where we have no "youngsters." Jesus Christ. There's not some kind of multidimensional algorithm that reacts to how bad the Cubs can be for a sustained period of time.
  19. And here we are at the "but we'll waste a WHOLE YEAR" argument again.
  20. Trying too hard, too inexplicably grammatically perfect...this is a weak rawdogging.
  21. Why do you insist on saying so many punchable things?
  22. "To a degree?" Fangraphs has him at 7 WAR and worth about $28 million.
