  1. Chatwood makes me sad, both because he sucks and because he looks so much like Brody Stevens.
  2. Oh, good; the horsefeathering killjoy narc with this reply is a Cubs fan: [tweet] [/tweet]
  3. I mean, granted, Happ completely flaming out in the spring, Zobrist ditching the team and Russell (ugh) still being as garbage on the field as he is off is a pretty tough 1-2-3 you aren't really planning for...BUT STILL.
  4. It's such a baffling signing. Like, sure, if you basically just needed a guy in that nebulous, "well, we need one of those rando all glove veteran types on the bench who can play several positions to give the good players rest," it still sucks, but I get it. But this was a team that was likely going to need some actually capable MI backup, and it was going to be someone who was going to get some legit playing time...and this is who they go with? Why? Either they're dolts and think he inexplicably figured out being a capable player at horsefeathering age 32, or it's just the epitome of how cheap they're trying to go. Like, what possibly jumped out at them in regards to Descalso over a similarly dirt cheap player like Derek Dietrich, who at least has more than one horsefeathering season of not being a turd under his belt?
  5. Someone create a list of all of the middle infielders who signed with other teams this past offseason. We'll probably all have rage strokes and drop dead.
  6. I want this to actually happen just for the off chance they win the WS and then have to figure out things like where to have the parade. Or play the [expletive] games.
  7. Clearly the dude forgot the score as opposed to how many outs there were, so I guess it was fitting that a game both was reported by a botched tweet: [tweet] [/tweet]
  8. CarGo suddenly got a semi at the thought of his godforsaken career being prolonged a few more years.
  9. Inaugurate it with Youppi and Raymond making sweet love at home plate while Gritty watches.
  10. That's certainly an idea.
  11. And it’s not wrong to think that way, because it’s mostly true and probable Also, have you spent any time reading this board lately? Because if you have, you'll know that we're terrible and a fluke and all our good hitters are due for regression and all our bad hitters just actually suck and this is what they are. Start scouting the 2020 draft.
  12. Man, good to see Willson back to his sexy self and Baez making loud outs.
  13. Now this is a nice baseball discussion.
  14. I'm not disagreeing that Eloy is garbage defensively; I'm the one who was suggesting that it makes the most sense to move him to 1B/DH (and ideally much more of the latter) as soon Abreu is gone. The defensive discussion is about Schwarber's value there; I'm murky (shocker) about the disparity between UZR and other cumulative defensive metrics, and appreciate the different explanations so far. I guess my main takeaway is my lizard meatball brain can't wrap my head around the idea that Schwarber would arguably be less valuable for the Cubs if they had a DH slot available for him.
  15. Weird, I have something different from fangraphs: .280 .302 .700 with a .399 wOBA and 148 wrc+ I will absolutely take that. Regardless, him finding some power is a good thing and he has continued to hit the ball hard over that stretch and increased his LD%. A small sample like this is of course not predictive but I don't think anyone is worried about his walk rate over this stretch. I am worried about his noticeably less than ideal OBP in 2017 and so far this year. His slugging and BA seem to be right in line with what you can expect/hope for from him, but that 30-40 point drop in OBP seems to really be the line he needs to walk (HI-OOOOOOHHHHHHHHH).
  16. I'll fully cop to just doing the (possibly) dumb thing and only going to BR and Fangraphs' defensive WAR/cumulative defensive value numbers. Where is the disconnect? The Defense value you see in the Fangraphs dashboard isn't adjusted for position, so you could use that to compare the relative contributions of Schwarber to say, Baez, if you really wanted to. UZR is going to be a bit more practical for most purposes, and it's further down the page: https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=16478&position=OF#fieldingadvanced Also I misspoke, it's +8.3 career, got the 8.8 from 2017 lodged in my brain. So what is BR doing with theirs? The whole not adjusted for position thing seems really dumb.
  17. Schwarber has been an absolute beast over the last two weeks. Right, as I described: .262 .289 .667 .956 Then this past week: .235 .235 .588 .824 Over the last month his OBP is barely over .300. I seriously doubt anyone here thinks these are realistic or sustainable lines.
  18. Come on, man; how long does one season's worth of a Fangraphs defensive rating get to be the sort of thing you can hang a statement like this on? Schwarber has over 2600 innings (~285 full games) in the OF with a UZR/150 of +8.8. He has multiple seasons of 90+ games in the OF with at least an 8.8 UZR. Even if you take an oaf tax of half a win per year he's still adding value. I'll fully cop to just doing the (possibly) dumb thing and only going to BR and Fangraphs' defensive WAR/cumulative defensive value numbers. Where is the disconnect?
