I think the switch from Lovie and Marinelli to Trestman and Tucker (and the Canadian/inexperienced staff) definitely played a major part. Peppers, who by all accounts needs to be motivated to perform, did not perform as well as he could last year. Briggs barely bought in to the new regime and seemed to hold a grudge all year long. Has Briggs ever not held a grudge? I just think when an older player falls off like that it has more to do with him simply getting older as opposed to not being motivated; Smith's main point centered around the Bears' terrible run defense, so Peppers basically didn't get a lot of the opportunities he had before, but it was pointed out right away that when Peppers was good he was effective against both the run and the pass.

Stephen A. Smith thinks that the reason Peppers (and the Bears' defense as a whole) stunk last season was the switch from Lovie to Trestman.

for the record, i wasn't with kyle on that part...just on really hoping he doesn't break camp (which he will) literally who cares if he "breaks camp." what in the world do we have to lose in this scenario i still want the team to be as good as it possibly can be Oh, NOW you do. Jeeeeeeeeeeeeez. -

I'd be incredibly disappointed, but given the nature of the game it wouldn't shock me; I don't think it's too likely that all four simply go bust, but a combination of busts (or hell, simply being "OK") and injuries would level that playing field pretty damn fast and not really be all that unusual.

Corey Patterson is the only one in that group hyped as much as the core four. I don't think any of the other guys made the top 30 like these guys have. Sadly, it wouldn't be unusual if any number of the Core Four didn't pan out.
