    I thought we were talking in the context of what was expected of guys like Patterson and Pie, not just technically "making it." I agree to a point in that I think if the current FO had their hands on Patterson he probably would have had a better shot of being a useful everyday player, but I still don't think he would have hit the levels everyone was hoping/expecting of him. And was is this "he was with Dusty when his career ended?" He played another 239 games after that in majors, including a decent year in a part time role for the Orioles in 2010.

    Part of me thinks Patterson was fine until Dusty decided to try to transform him into a slappy leadoff man. I can't stand Dusty, but if that's all it took to break Patterson then he was never going to be what we hoped he would be. But what he was in 2003 and 2004 (and 2006) was plenty good. Right, and that he couldn't maintain that success shows to me it wasn't meant to be. He got plenty of chances and showed flashes and had success post-Dusty but still couldn't stick. Are we really blaming all of that on Dusty?

    Part of me thinks Patterson was fine until Dusty decided to try to transform him into a slappy leadoff man. I can't stand Dusty, but if that's all it took to break Patterson then he was never going to be what we hoped he would be.

    Yeah, someone with Trout's talent still would have broken through. I don't think guys like Pie or Patterson would have made it even with the current FO in place.

    Vogelbach is purposefully being treated as a trade chip that's a cut below, no? And while he's not some trump card, he's also got an OPS 90 points above the league average, so he's not tanking at Daytona either. there are lots of guys that aren't "tanking" the level they're at. doesn't mean anyone wants to trade for them. he needs to be a 30 hr guy to have value. he's shown no ability to do that. Not a lot of guys at his level have approaches and discipline that he has. The power will come, people say that about a ton of guys who have hit way fewer home runs in the minors than him. Yeah, but the power needs to come for him to be truly valuable. It's all well and good to think it will come, but if you're looking to use him as a valuable trading chip he needs to actually start showing that power again consistently.

"Flash" is probably the key word in this; his inability to consistently hit at the levels hoped of coupled with the defensive issues make him more of an add-on than a centerpiece in a deal. A decent add-on, sure, but you're not centering a major deal around him. Oh, I never implied him as a centerpiece. Then what's your issue with what people are saying? abuck only objected to the idea of a trade centered around him.
