    Pointing out the reality of the situation, that you're valuing a prospect over a proven asset under long-term control, is not disparaging Russell. It's been the opposite, with people pointing out how the Cubs can fit him into the lineup with Castro.

    Colvin/Campana was one of the worst in recent memory for the Cubs (in the minors). Both were stretchered off the field and taken to the hospital. Say what you will about Colvin, but he had some of the worst luck when it came to freak injuries. I remember Colvin getting vampire-hunted in the chest, but I had no clue he and Campana collided.

    PTR and his three stooges are counting on most fans to feel that way. How sure are you he's even going to be any good? He got started in the Cuban league late and wasn't there long. He seems to be a physical specimen but that's no real indicator of baseball skill. I trust our scouts to know what he's worth and the front office not to overpay.     doesn't mean he wasn't smart enough to And so far we're seeing nothing that shows that "smartness" = better control pitcher. i think the idea is that being smart helps a guy who gets by on movement and command, not that it helps him have those traits. it helps him use his pitching repertoire, doesn't help his actual repertoire. i think pitching in general (especially with stuff that isn't all that overpowering physically) is cerebral enough that this is a reasonable thing to think. I agree with the general idea that pitchers are probably often the smarter players on the team, but the rest is unproven bunk. BUNK, I SAY. Now create a new game thread.

    Maddux didn't even go to college. There's obviously a ton of work that goes into it, but I highly doubt whether or not the pitcher went to a good school, or if they did well in school, has a ton to do with how well they can place their pitches.
