  1. He's younger, healthier and not crazy? but z is much better. this whole trade z movememnet upsets me greatly. he's never gone near 100 in terms of era+. I don't know how you can argue that Z is better. Garza just put up 3 consecutive WHIPS of roughly 1.25 in the AL East; Zambrano hasn't done that in 5 years in the NL Central. WHIP? Come on. It's not a perfect stat, but neither is FIP. Guys with consistently good WHIPS year after year tend to be pretty good pitchers.
  2. He's younger, healthier and not crazy? Can't argue much with the first two, but he's definitely got some of the same personality concerns as Z. Agreed. Those that think swapping Zambrano for Garza would add emotional stability or whatever are probably mistaken. I don't know much about him, but I've never heard him missing time during the season due to emotional outbursts.

  4. Yeah, I think Brackman might be a realistic target as well.
  5. That's what Ronnie Brewer is for. We need a guy who can shoot.
  6. To be fair, he didn't have a lot of talent to work with.
  7. Crap. I was hoping after he lost out on the Big 10 jobs he'd be around 1 or 2 more years

  9. This isn't Kansas City. Big boys don't get to take 2 years off and only build for the distant future. Which is why I don't like where the Cubs are. And the point of my original comment was that the Phillies are going to have to take off multiple years soon enough and they really didn't have to. They could have had a great team now and been prepared for the future but they've utterly ruined that. That is an utterly ridiculous assumption to make years in advance. They are a successful big market team acting like a successful big market team. Successful teams don't have an entire roster of 30+ year olds with no prospects to replace them while expanding the payroll to levels that might not be able to be sustained. That's irresponsible. You can't buy an entire team through free agency...even the Yankees have taken some effort to develop young players. The Phillies did when they originally developed Utley/Howard/Rollins/Vicotorino but that was a long time ago now. It's only irresponsible when you're a mediocre team like the Cubs. The Phillies developed a hell of a core and are now doing everything possible to maximize their chances at multiple championships. It's how every organization with resources should operate, and hopefully the Cubs can be as irresponsible some day.
  10. Randy Wells, Carlos Silva, Ted Lilly and Ryan Dempster are an amazing array of talent? Because all of them pitched better after getting under Rothschild's tutelage than before. Not to mention guys like Joe Borowski, Matt Clement, Glendon Rusch and Jerome Williams
  11. Terry Hoepner at Indiana would have been...
  12. This is my thinking. I tend to think Garza/Webb is an either/or proposition, and I'd much rather have the elite potential if I'm taking a bit of a gamble anyway. I can understand if you wouldn't want to trade prospects and would rather just spend money on Webb. But Garza was once one of the top pitching prospect in the game. Considering Webb has had major shoulder trouble, hasn't pitched in two years and was last seen throwing in the mid-80's, I think Garza's chances at being elite are at least equal to Webb's.
  13. Huh, he doesn't indicate why he thinks it would be a "certainty". Just because the Cubs could use him in the Central doesnt mean that the Rays have to trade him if they don't see good value. Not sure how Price came to that conclusion. Huh? A source told Ed Price they were certain he would be traded. They aren't going to explain why they feel that way. Ah, read that wrong. Stupid illiteracy. . Still, if none of the offers were sweetened, why would the Rays be so motivated to move him? They've already trimmed payroll significantly for next year. They could get a better return from motivated buyers at the deadline since he'd still be under team control for another 2+ years. They're doing this to make room for Hellickson. At the deadline, he'll be making more money. Also, a contending team would be more reluctant to trade a vital piece of their team in the middle of the playoff race.
  14. I would too Marshall's really good, but I couldn't blame Hendry for trading away two players who very well might be at their peak value.
  15. Kind of was hoping to keep Chirinos to use in the deal with Texas to get O'Day and Davis. Maybe one of them would accept one of our other catching prospects instead? This has the potential to be a really, really bad trade. Remember that it's Levine reporting that "top prospects" are involved. Levine doesn't appear to have any real knowledge on the farm system. I don't think he even knew who Hak-Ju Lee was until he played in the futures game last year. It's very possible he sees people like Darwin Barney as a top prospect because he made it to the majors last year.
  16. Tampa would never go for it, but it would be an upgrade. It's really not that much of an upgrade, and when you factor in the salary difference between the two, it makes little sense for the Cubs to make that trade. Garza has a much higher upside though. It's too bad Rothschild is gone. It would be somewhat similar to when we got Clement, although Garza has had more success.
  17. Why would you want that? Kelly may never figure out how to stop that offense. ? You mean Diaco? ND lost on a last minute drive after playing half the game without its starting QB. Maybe the game is different if Crist isn't out after the first drive and his backups throw picks (including 1 on the first play Crist was out). September Tommy Rees wasn't nearly the same as November Tommy Rees, who still had some "freshman with limited ability though a good football IQ" issues. ND's defense was significantly better in November than in September as well. I'm looking forward to seeing Michigan again next year. ND wins if Nate Montana never steps onto the field, but that's a separate issue. They still could have won if Robinson didn't go 72 yards for the game winning TD and finish the game with over 500 total yards. West Virginia used to to the same thing to Kelly's Cincinnati's team.

  19. The AD claimed he was planning on accepting it. He's making 1.25 right now, curious as to how much the raise would be. The question is whether there's any sort of non-compete clause in that contract. I kind of doubt it. The Michigan situation is going to play out beginning in early January. There probably isn't a reason for Harbaugh to sign anything before his bowl game, which is 2 days after Michigan plays. Both sides should have a pretty good idea of what is going to transpire by the end of that 1st week in January. Non-compete clauses aren't allowed in California
  20. Unfortunately, he did well during our little winning streak in September, which Hendry appears to be basing this entire offseason on.
  21. Agreed. He's not particularly young anymore and was one of the best relievers in the game last year. The injury risk and drop in bullpen talent isn't worth it. This isn't Cashner.
  22. He had an ERA over 5 in AA and gave up a ton of hits. And he's never really had dominant strikeout numbers. Given that he was a first round pick of the Red Sox and was once a two way player, he's probably overrated.
  23. The Brewers just traded for Marcum though, and are apparently going after Greinke too. Seems possible they might go for it this year and then take the draft picks.
  24. ouch. that sucks for Temple, but finishing with losses to Ohio and Miami (OH) to go 5-3 in the MAC isn't the way to endear yourself to bowls. And UCONN beat WVU, Pitt, Syracuse and South Florida at the end of the year. Sucks when a team you beat goes to a bowl and you don't, but it seems pretty clear that UCONN had the better season. You mean MAC Champions Miami (OH)? Yeah, but it would mean a little more if they didn't get owned by every AQ-conference team they played. We hardly got owned by Florida.
