  1. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/the-gms-office/post?id=7439 Uh....yes please at that price. If people really think he has a 70 hit tool and 70 power, he's getting a lot more than $54 million. He's getting at least twice that. Luckily, it's Jim Bowden.
  2. Especially when those two positions are left field and first base. But I'd still just rather sign Choo. I'm not sure it matters that much what position it is when you're downgrading from Rizzo at 1B to likely awful. That's a massive swing. It's first base. It's the easiest position to play in the game. And I don't even know how one could properly measure that "massive swing." Defensive metrics are all over the place for first base.
  3. Especially when those two positions are left field and first base. But I'd still just rather sign Choo.
  4. It's certainly set up to be his job, but he has literally done nothing that would indicate he should get it. Well, he has more than doubled his July OPS in August, but that is still below 600. At least the Ks seem to have stopped. He's in the mysterious world of no BABIP right now, and disappointingly low power. He has to be mentally screwed up at this point. I'd be OK just pulling from Iowa, having him work out in Arizona, and then letting him play in the AFL to get his confidence back up.
  5. I think Olt will get the first shot, too. But they'll have to keep Barney at 2B with Valbuena on the bench in case Olt is a total bust and Vitters shows he can't handle the position defensively.
  6. You might have been right about his age. Once I see D.R. on a player's page, you gotta wonder. Venezuela too, though their record keeping is supposedly better. But they may have an organized Government program to help their citizens. Balaguert is from Cuba. Thanks for the correction, although with apologies to Lo-Pan Fan, it doesn't change the gist of my post. These days, I think you're overstating the age concerns. These days, if anything, players will be saying they are older than they really are. Which isn't much of a concern for the teams (just MLB itself).
  7. Obviously #notascout, but I was pretty impressed by him when I saw him in Kane County a few weeks ago.
  8. Agreed. He's also third in the league in doubles. I think he's going to break out in 2015 in Tennessee.
  9. So Almora and Vogelbach get the rest of the year off?
  10. I think he'd be a pretty good reserve infielder. The problem is that I could potentially see Sveum interfering with the plan and playing him way too much. Barney strikes me as a guy that managers love.
  11. If he finishes with good numbers in AA, it would take a more than Gallo-esque K rate to keep him out of the top 10 Totally agree. But usually a guy with his profile would be in the top 3-5.
  12. If Baez finishes strong and ends up with good numbers in AA, over 30 homeruns, and a horrible K rate, it will be interesting to see where he fits on top 100 lists, given the glaring red flag. Edit: Particularly in comparison to Sano.
  13. Well, if you were going for it, I doubt you'd trade your best reliever for young players. And we probably wouldn't have traded our best young pitcher for a 1B who needed at least half a year at AAA.
  14. why aren't we a decent team? because we didn't sign Prince Fielder Don't forget CJ Wilson. Fielder/Pujols + Wilson were supposed to lead us to the playoffs last year.
  15. The abandonment of 2012 also put them in a hole they tried but failed to dig out of in 2013, and we may yet see more of those consequences in 2014 and 2015. I'm far from convinced that what we gained in an expedited farm system will make up for the seasons we lost. We've locked in the downside and are praying for enough upside to cover it. I think part of it will depend on how Kris Bryant turns out.

  17. Balaguert looks promising too So does Rivera.
  18. i ignored it because it wasn't an analogous situation, whatsoever; they had Anderson at #19 as the only top-80 guy you have a ridiculous definition of "panned out" if an elite reliever, or top-5 CY finisher don't qualify so sure, i agree with you- our top guys probably won't all be perennial all-stars; thanks for that revelation I don't really consider Dice-K a true prospect, that's why I didn't count him. As for Bard, he was really good for 140 major league innings and then entirely imploded. I guess we should be considering Corey Patterson a smashing success by your standards.
  19. So in 2006, three of their top 6 panned out. In 2007, 3 of the top 6 panned out. And in 2008, 4 of the top 6 panned out (which is excellent). Not sure how much this refutes my point. Also, good thing you conveniently ignored 2009: 1. Ryan Westmoreland 2. Casey Kelly 3. Josh Reddick 4. Lars Anderson 5. Ryan Kalish Anthony Rizzo was #8, so I guess there's that.
  20. With the great improvement in the farm system, we had better hope that quite a few of them reach their expectation level. If 2 or 3 of our top 5 prospects don't pan out, we could be in serious trouble for quite awhile. It's almost a guarantee 2 or 3 won't pan out like we hoped. That's how prospects work.
  21. Is Tanaka worth that type of money?
  22. Last 10 games for Baez: .268/.375/.537
  23. I really like Lockgart, but Boise to Iowa? Iowa is in Tacoma, so I'm guessing Lockhart was the only infielder that could get there quick enough.
  24. I think Raley could a bullpen option too at some point.
