  1. 4) You want to get his bat in the lineup, and the other positions are filled by good players.
  2. Baez has a pretty strong arm, but may eventually lack the range for the SS position, so those guys generally move to 3B. I don't see why he couldn't play 2B though.
  3. I doubt it. He clearly wants to be playing in the majors. I do think, however, that he assumed he could take his time coming back, performance be damned, and just be handed the third base job regardless of how anyone else was performing.
  4. Good to see Gretzky on there. When Schlecht was drafted, I had hopes for him as a sleeper, but it looks like he doesn't have much of a future.
  5. I think I remember hearing the name, but at that time Amaya and Hernandez were the young SS prospects getting the most attention. But how much longer does Alcantara toy with AA, especially with the AAA starting SS job currently held down by Brent Lillibridge? The trouble is, as long as SS is his primary position, I'm not sure where he can go from there. Even if Castro's OPS continues to spiral into numbers that would make Koyie Hill blush, he's not going anywhere. May as we give Alcantara some more time at 2nd. Maybe a bit at 3rd. He's been seeing some time at 2B recently. My guess is that he'll continue to split time between the two positions, with more time devoted to SS for trade value/experience purposes.
  6. HR was saying that Moneyball no longer applied because the A's were drafting high school kids. "Moneyball" was all about drafting college kids. Jonathan Mayo tried to explain to him that the concepts in Moneyball were all about finding value where others weren't looking, but HR wasn't buying it. I give Mayo credit for biting his tongue and not getting visibly frustrated.
  7. Yeah, I was just getting ready to pose the "Rank our top 4 prospects" question. I go: Bryant Soler Almora Baez But I could easily be swayed to flop the first two. It's very close. Soler is 7 weeks younger than Bryant. Given all his wonderful peripherals, I need to see Bryant on a professional field before I think about him over Soler. I'm apparently higher than Almora than most, but I think he and Bryant are pretty level at this point. Agreed. I'd probably put Almora ahead of Bryant at this point.
  8. our top 4 hitting prospects are pretty insane Vogelbach is still the best hitter in the system. At this point, I think Soler has shown he is.
  9. Not sure what Rodon has to do with their strategy in this draft.
  10. He's the best prospect in the draft AND the closest to the majors. Most drafts will only get you 2-3 major leaguers anyways, so I'm OK with securing a guy with the best chance of contributing to the major league team. Plus rounds 2-50 are a complete crapshoot anyways.
  11. Appel would be my top choice, as he's the safest choice. After that, I'd go with Bryant, given how rare of a commodity power is these days. If our FO was confident Bryant can stick at 3B, I'd probably take him over Appel. Not as big of a fan of Gray, as I never really trust those guys who fly up the rankings during the season based mostly on an increase in velocity. Gray seems like a worse version of Gerrit Cole.
  12. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0605-bits-cubs-angels-chicago-20130605,0,3588149.story Well that has to be one of the stupidest things I have read about this renovation plan. What business does the city of Chicago have trying to insert themselves into the MLB scheduling process? These nonsensical and overreaching power plays are exhausting. That's easily the dumbest request any side has made throughout the entire process.
  13. Year to year, relief pitchers are never the same. They have an annoying habit of suddenly not being able to get anyone out. If the season is already going poorly, what difference will Having or not having Russell make? Except that Russell has been good for several years now. There are definitely relievers who are pretty consistent from year to year. The Cubs need to add a few of those guys going forward, not get rid of them. And then they can fill the rest of the bullpen with flyers if they choose.
  14. He'll probably start out at 3B as long as Vitters is on the DL. What will be interesting is what they do when Vitters comes back. They'll basically have to admit who they see as the better long-term option at 3B. I still think they prefer Lake. Well, Lake played all but one rehab game in CF when he could have played any position they wanted him to. I think they envision him as an OF at this point. That's interesting. Looks like I'm wrong. I thought he was splitting time pretty evenly between CF and 3B.

  16. Ditto. I don't see why he couldn't be the No. 5 prospect in the system right now. He's got eerily similar production to Baez with much better peripherals, a year further along in the system. At some point this week, I fully expect you to begin your all-out campaign for Alcantara>>Baez.
  17. April and May were the first months Vogelbach ever had to play in cold weather. I'd expect the power to pick up over the next few months.
  18. I thought that's what was happening last August and September, when the walks and power went up but the average dropped. Lately, he just seems to be getting himself out by swinging at horrible pitches.
  19. Of course not... but there's no question as to who makes the final call. Especially on the first pick. Technically yes. But I could see Epstein's "final call" being "Jason, who do you want?"
  20. I'd be interested to see if he would have ranked Prior ahead of Strasburg.
  21. Alcantara has a pretty big lefty/righty split. Does anyone know what it was in previous years? I wonder if he'd be better off dropping switch hitting.
  22. When you put it this way (correctly), its almost staggering. I view the lack of bullpen arms signed beyond this year as a good thing.
  23. At least it's nothing structural? This sucks. It could certainly be worse, but this pretty much ends his season. Given his injury history, anything from him at this point will be a bonus.
