  1. Looks to me like he's doing his best Robert Deniero impersonatoin. Looks alot like him in that Billy Crystal movie, and if I wasn't trying to think of the name of it I'd be able to I'm sure.
  2. I was just skimming and thought 4-3 was the date or something, and thought Walker was actually leading off. I almost had a heart attack, until I realized 4-3 was first. Hmmm. . . 4-3. . . don't get it :?: Really something aobut it. . . Think I should know  Wait a minute. . It's coming. . . :-k GOT IT!!!!!! #-o Excellent! You'd think someone who used to be an official scorer for college would have been a little quicker on the uptake. (EDIT: left out a word)
  3. Seeing as the season is already in the tank, I'd let him stay out until he gave up a hit. I mean, how many legitimate chances at a no hitter does a pitcher realistically have in his career. Of course, I'd also make sure he had a couple of extra days rest before running him back out there too. Knowing the Cubs, Dusty will leave him in, he'll throw 150+ pitches, walk a couple in the ninth and give up a three run homer, lose the game and then go on the DL after his arm falls off. But then again, I'm an optimist
  4. Isn't he singing it like 20 times this year? I think they are kind of working him into a full-time thing. Give it a year or two and he'll be doing it every game.
  5. What's the over/under on how many games he would play in before being suspended for steroid use?
  6. Gameday put it differently. Juan Pierre singles on a sharp ground ball to first baseman Mark Sweeney.
  7. From espn.com rumors http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors Trade talks on hold May 10 - The Orioles have had serious discussions about trading Jeff Conine to the Cubs for a pitcher, but any deal is likely on hold until the health of the O's improves, the Baltimore Sun reports. Conine, 39, would have to approve the trade because he signed with the Orioles as a free agent in the offseason, and under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, no player who signed as a free agent can be traded before June 15 without his consent. Won't post the whole thing verbatim because of copyright issues, but it goes on to say that the Orioles would want left-handed bullpen help and mentions Ohman by name. Personally I don't think Conine is going to be enough of an upgrade to warrant trading anything of value for him.
  8. I don't think it's as catastrophic as it looks. First, I don't do anything today. It's still too early for a number of reasons. 1) A hot streak puts you back in it (In all reality, the season is probably toast, but you never know. ), 2) bad PR and bad for business 3) the value of my trading chips goes up the closer I get to the deadline (assuming they perform well) and 4) there is a lot of time for injuries and poor play on other teams to add to the market. My main concern is getting Wood back. I put him in the rotation and tell Dusty to treat him with Kid gloves. No extended outings, don't send him back out to face the heart of the order in the 7th, that type stuff. Give Wood every opportunity to prove he's okay. I think firing Dusty is irrelevant at this point, unless he bucks the plan. Now, at the end of June if we're still in the toilet, then I start shopping. Tops on my list are Wood, Maddux, Pierre and Walker. I don't believe any one of them will be with the organizatioin next year so I do what I can to get something out of them. I'd also be willing to pay all of their '06 salary to improve the return. The money is already budgeted and by that point a large percentage of the revenue has already been realized. (I'd like to get a major league ready 2nd baseman and outfielder but I'll take the best available deal regardless of position) Wood is the key, if he pitches well and you can get him to waive his no trade, he could be a great trading chip. He's a lot like Nomar in that if he stays healthy he could come back to haunt you, but unless he's willing to come back on an incentive laden deal I can't take the chance. Maddux, Pierre and Walker can bring solid or better returns, depending on their production. Once Pierre is gone, I bring up Pie and play him. Maybe you sit him for match-ups but other than that he needs to be on the field. Even though it would be immensely unpopular, I keep both Perez and Rusch. At their salary they have no trade value and if you pay their salary you're still not going to get anything back worth having. As foolish as it is to pay them each $5 million over two years, it's even sillier to pay them not to play and then pay for a utility infielder and a swingman when they can full both those roles just fine. I go into next season with a rotation of: Prior, Z, Miller, Marshall and Hill/Guzman. Bullpen is Eyre, Dempster, Howry and Rusch. Two open spots filled by internal competition. Fielder's next season are: Barrett, Lee, Ramirez, Jones, Pie, Cedeno, Murton. Perez is on the bench. Hopefully I Pick up my second baseman in trade or someone is ready. The free agent class for next year isn't all that spectacular.
  9. I imagine if you looked at your tuition bill closely, you'd see an "athletic fee" or something like that. The top 10% or so of colleges sell out, the rest don't. I attended two smaller schools and worked for two schools athletic departments, and this was the case at every one. The "athletic Fee" guarantess student admission to all school athletic events, which would cause an incredible problem if everyone showed up. However, since they don't, it's a way to raise money for the athletic departments that is very effective.
  10. Are you kidding me? My thoughts exactly. I gave up fantasy baseball. Made it too hard to be a fan. :)
  11. Dempster still gets the save even if he only gets one out right? The tieing or winning run has to be on deck, I think. That's only if the lead is more than 3 runs. 3 run or less lead and 1 out is a save. SAVES FOR RELIEF PITCHERS 10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions: (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and (3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions: (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or © He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game. http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/official_info/official_rules/official_scorer_10.jsp
  12. I've decided Rusch sucks.
  13. Does anybody know if Dempster got credit for the save yesterday in the 5-1 win? No save
  14. Happy to be of sevice.
  15. MLB official rules: 10.14 C © No error shall be charged against any fielder when he makes a wild throw in attempting to complete a double play or triple play, unless such wild throw enables any runner to advance beyond the base he would have reached had the throw not been wild. NOTE: When a fielder muffs a thrown ball which, if held, would have completed a double play or triple play, charge an error to the fielder who drops the ball and credit an assist to the fielder who made the throw. http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/official_info/official_rules/official_scorer_10.jsp Didn't see it, but based on the above rule and the descriptions in this thread it looks like a solid call by the scorer.
  16. Mine's completely stopped working now. I guess I shouldn't have complained about the frequent cut outs earlier. I can't get a thing. Not real happy with the new system right now.
  17. Is anyone else having trouble with MLB Gameday audio?
  18. I don't know; old used balls may have too much sentimental value for somebody. Just ask Anna Nicole. That's just wrong Funny, but wrong [-X
  19. This is pretty amazing. Not surprising, but amazing. Everybody "knew" Bonds was on steroids, now everybody KNOWS. There is a profound difference. The research in this book is exhausting and the proof appears to be overwhelming. 'Course, that doesn't mean he won't deny it for 10 years (Rose) but he isn't going to be able to deny his way out of this one. He had to know this was coming, there is no way word of this book didn't leak back to him. The most telling thing is that he hasn't filed a slander suit and or an injunction to stop publication, which he would do if he had a leg to stand on. No publishing company would print these allegations if they couldn't back it up. It's not a used syringe in his hand, but it is as close to one as you're going to get. The only way this goes away is if he does.
  20. Boy, wouldn't you like to have the first pick in that draft. You're talking about adding some very high quality players and prospects.
  21. If I'm not mistaken. Part of the agreement in the last deal was that the owner's would agree not to contract that time and the player's agreed not to oppose it in the future. Anyone else remeber that or am I nuts?
  22. The Importance of context. Sometimes it can be easy to seem how people claim to be misquoted. From the tribune article on Nefi wanting to start: Baker puts a premium on defense, and Cedeno is no slouch himself, but he has to show he can keep the starting job. Baker said Monday that Cedeno has been pressing a bit. He wants Cedeno to "be himself," though Cedeno understands the pressure is on him and left fielder Matt Murton to succeed. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060306cubs,1,1825970.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines Same thing refernece in Bruce's Daily Herald Column http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs.asp Manager Dusty Baker said both players look fine to him. “I see Ronny pressing a little more, I think, than Matt,” Baker said. “Matt didn’t play winter ball, and Ronny did play winter ball. He had a great winter ball. Forget it and go on and be yourself. Every kid’s different. He’s got a lot of people around him who can help him. It’s all part of the learning process. He’ll be fine.” Both accurately reported what was said, but you get two different meanings. In the Nefi story it sounded like Baker was looking for an excuse to bench Cedeno and in the Herald story it sounds like Baker is reponding to a question by saying he isn't worried about Cedeno.
  23. :pukel: Me either. How is the Tiger's GM position not vacant? Let's see, Minimum $63 mil over 4 years. I'd do it for Patterson, a B prospect and the Tigers eating about half - As long as there is no automatic vesting clause for the final two years. Of course, this is all predicated on the Tigers actually wanting to move his contract, they may not. But if you could pick up Maggs for that I'd call it an offseason and feel pretty good about 2006
