  1. I know far more about basketball than baseball and am not remotely a baseball scout, so grain of salt, but: Schwarber controls the strike zone and seemingly hits the ball hard every time he makes contact. The guy can really, really hit. Definitely one of the best Big Ten hitters I've seen come through. Catching seems fine, who knows. I thought he showed good arm strength both behind the plate and in the field. I was surprised he went No. 4, but most expected him to be a first-rounder, at least here. (Just too bad about IU's two-straight late-inning loses to end their season.)
  2. Man, I'm bummed . . . but maybe not as much as I would have expected. Think: (1) lost a great, close series in overtime (coin-flip) to really good team; (2) the Hawks have seemingly always won these games, guess a loss was due; (3) 2010, 2013.
  3. I agree but I can see their point, everyone here are Cub fans so maybe that's where it comes from. But they are also presumably Blackhawks fans. You remember the Blackhawks, the team that has won two of the last four Cups and 12 playoff series in the last six years, including one against our biggest rival last year when they were down 3-1? But they are also Bears fans -- that team skating to the playoffs until their QB goes down in crushing fashion. And Bulls fans -- that team setting up for a multi-year run at the playoffs only to see it all ripped away mercilessly with injury. Twice. And Cubs fans. The reality of being a Cubs fan doesn't get wiped away by the Blackhawks winning a couple Cups. Only the ultimate can do that. Cut people some slack. All I'm saying. Yes, pity the poor Bulls fans. (The Bulls, a team that has won more titles in my lifetime than every team I root for combined over that time span.)
  4. Highlight of the game for me.
  5. Right or wrong, if things don't go well in Brazil, invariably, people will compare this to 1998 and John Harkes.
  6. Yeah, they're reaching for the series overall, but they have every right to feel like they should have won last night's game. The problem with that is that, as with sports in general, is in close games the team with the best player/playmakers/etc. has an advantage.
  7. Pretty much. I'll forever remain amazed that people wanted to trade him (yeah, yeah, meatballs); it's no coincidence that he scores so many huge goals. And it's priceless.
  8. Ha, yeah. I made that comparison last week in this thread. I just didn't expect it to get worse. Sigh.
  9. If it was only a bit of trash, that would've been one thing. Classy, Boston. Real classy. Well, maybe Subban should do things the white way.
  10. Oh crap, it's already no-local-broadcasts-time? Ugh. I have CNBC but not NBC Sports.
  11. Well, you know that Crean is hyperactive/ADHD and feels the need to constantly be doing something. And IU was entirely lacking in size. So those two things added together probably inevitably lead to reaching for players. The April kid actually seems like a decent flier (7-foot, seems pretty mobile/smooth from videos (I know, I know), and reportedly had offers from Arizona State, Marquette and Washington State). The Priller kid seems like a complete reach out of desperation. As I think I've said on here before, who knew recruiting would become the problem for Crean?
  12. It's always (somewhat) a looming danger for teams that play from the back. Though it's even more surprising considering that wasn't a defender, it was a skilled central midfield. As is not uncommon, in possession, Liverpool splits its central defenders and Gerrard (deep-lying playmaker) drops deep centrally to initiate attacks. Which means it's not uncommon for him to be in the middle of the field, with the ball, and no defenders behind him. It's something you trust him to do but that flukey slip (preceded by a less-than-ideal first touch) pretty much ended the play/game, as you said. Yeah; it was the first touch that really was the problem; the slip seemed more the end result of him realizing that he just basically put Ba through on a breakaway. Agreed. He slipped because he was already scrambling because of the poor first touch (or almost a whiffed first touch).

  14. Yeah, Chelsea has been better than Liverpool twice this year. No other team can say that; in fact, very few can say it even once.
  15. I always wanted to re-live rooting for the 2003 Cubs. Sigh.
  16. One would think . . . and surely hope.
  17. If only Suarez had died, diving would have been eliminated forever from soccer!
  18. Louisville hires assistant coach Kenny Johnson away from Indiana. Guess they just really want BeeJay Anya.
  19. Again? Might be a hard sell to go down that route (not that that is a terribly rational thought process). You'd think they would look at Klopp or Simeone.
  20. Survived without two starters and held on a bit late. But: two wins and a draw, seven points, away. So, so close.
  21. Obviously I missed that Raheem Sterling story. Have fun with your dream season, though. Wasn't trying to act like Liverpool are any different than every pro sports team. That is exactly my point, actually. A lot of romanticism about this team out there right now. Not from you, just the media in general. Sterling was found not guilty of the most recent one, but it's not the only time he's been alleged to have assaulted a woman. So, either he just happens to date women that unfairly accuse him of beating them . . . or Occam's Razor something something. It's sad and depressing that it has to be this way. But when we fight about the righteousness of different teams, we all lose.
  22. lol. He's an athlete. You should pretty much presume they're all arrogant jerk meatballs. That goes for your team too--whatever team that is. Edit: Raheem Sterling? Hahaha, right, the guy that assaulted his girlfriend is cool but the guy that gets into fights (with other guys) and the guy that dives aren't cool. Again: they're arrogant jerk meatballs. Best to ignore and move on.
  23. Yes, he misses Norwich, Chelsea, and Crystal Palace. He's a very big loss -- especially for Chelsea, as you said. At least this is one area where Liverpool have some depth, as they can call on Allen or Lucas. Obviously I'd rather play Henderson, but for a team that is thin compared to the other top level clubs, it could have been worse. Though the Gerrard-Lucas pairing struggled early in the year; expecting Allen to be the first choice. For all the sublime moments between Suarez and Sturridge, they have battled bouts of selfishness. Maybe that's to be expected.
  24. C'mon now, you should know: You'll Never Walk Alone. Four to go. . . will be tougher without Henderson (hopefully Sturridge is fine).
