  1. Here's an article from a couple years ago that Michael Lewis wrote about going for it on 4th down: http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3641375 I remember reading something similar awhile back that said Belichick actually read academic papers saying that coaches should go for it on 4th down more often and I've been waiting for him to do something pretty radical but I didn't expect it in that situation. Edit: Here's the paper http://elsa.berkeley.edu/~dromer/papers/PAPER_NFL_JULY05_FORWEB_CORRECTED.pdf ...I'm pretty sure the Christina Romer thanked in that article is now one of Obama's top economic advisers.
  2. I think if they knew they were going for it all along they would've ran it twice from 3rd and 2. I actually like the call overall but the fact that they threw it twice instead of setting up a potential 4th and inches type situation by running on 3rd down leads me to believe that Belichick said F it and decided to go for it.
  3. In other news, Manny Pacquaio is officially one of the greatest boxers of all time.
  4. Jennings is a killer. Wow.
  5. If La Tech somehow beat LSU and TCU continued to paste Utah I wonder what the shakeout would be.
  6. Anyone know what time the Pac/Cotto fight is supposed to start?
  7. It would seem pretty ridiculous to get rid of Mangino after the season they had in 2007. On the other hand, it's kind of looking like those years were a perfect confluence of teams being flabbergasted by a wide open spread passing attack--same deal with Mizzou. That edge has been diminished a lot.
  8. Harbaugh can compete for conference titles and maybe more the next 3 years as long as Andrew Luck is there. I think he'd have to be bowled over with an offer to leave (NFL, Michigan).
  9. I remember after Florida had a "down" year when Tebow first took over as starter and they lost to Michigan, Meyer kind of threw some people under the bus and was basically a big prick about some of his players being quitters, bad fits, etc. Then I just thought he was a big [expletive]. I kinda hope Carroll does the same now. The loosy-goosy style is starting to backfire. More accountability needed I guess.
  10. I think Ohio State would beat Oregon. They're too Jekyll and Hyde and I think the Bucks could pound them a bit. There isn't a team that more heavily leans on positive momentum. Stanford is more dangerous, IMO. They're extremely balanced, mean, and physical as all hell. Gerhart gets 2 yards of body lean on every play...he's a frigging load.
  11. This is a snuff film.
  12. Ah, Stanford with the pick 6. Season...imploding.
  13. Andrew Luck is a stud.
  14. The Vest has never taken a team to the Rose Bowl.
  15. Cincy's already ranked over Texas in the computer rankings; wins over WVU and Pitt will only help that. The human polls are going to be critical, though. Texas getting into the title game over an undefeated Cincinnati because of the human polls would likely cause a substantial uproar. I don't see it. I understand the sentiment but I don't see an undefeated Cadillac program like Texas getting into the title game over an undefeated Big East team, despite the differences in their resumes, scaring BCS officials too much.
  16. If Cincy loses that game, I think they're still in at this point considering the lack of competition. Pittsburgh will be much more questionable. It will probably depend on the style points they get the next two weeks against ND/WV and how close the game is against Cincy. There's also the legitimate possibility that Cincy goes to the national championship if they go undefeated. They have a much better OOC resume than Texas and Sagarin has the Big East as a better conference than the Big 12. Cincy can jump Texas on the strength of its computer rankings? Isn't Texas shrinking the gap on Bama in the human polls?
  17. The weekly SEC blue balls special, no doubt.
  18. Well, you're just lashing out at everybody today aren't you? Iowa State is winning. Cheer up. You say "today" as if that isn't a regular occurrence.
  19. It doesn't. But uppity Iowa fans are cute.
  20. There probably isn't a bigger example of one team dominating an outside conference than there is USC and the Big 10 this decade. Just fyi.
  21. USC's defense hasn't stopped anybody in 2 months (besides Arizona State which barely counts).
  22. You should've been in the game thread on Thursday. Your hilarious bellyaching is cathartic for me.
  23. I was mainly joking around about Cutler being afraid of contact (although I'm completely serious about our receivers and running back being afraid of it, I think it's obvious that they are). He's not a pansy, he's just dumb, a lot.
  24. Maybe he's afraid of contact just like his starting running back and starting wide receivers are.
