  1. The real question here is whether or not Hendry can go to Ricketts and "sell" this type of acquisition to where Ricketts is flexible with the payroll. Thye following year Lilly's contract will fall off the books and it'd certainly seem like we'd rather have Halladay than Lilly going forward, since he's a true number 1 and it's not like there's many of them out there. My guess is Hendry will have to overcome the fact that right now it doesn't appear as if we are literally one player away though. But, if Soriano and Soto can have years like they have previously and we stay relatively healthy, maybe Hendry can persuade Ricketts into something. Because other than moving Bradley and getting his replacement in place, this is most likely going to be a very boring offseason otherwise......
  2. Why are we getting rid of Harden in the first place? Because our offseason priorities are probably this, in order of importance(to Hendry anyway) Trade Bradley Get Bradley's replacement, who's probably a middle of the order type by signing or trade(Granderson could be interesting from the standpoint of the Cubs could still lead him off and kill two birds with one stone, although I see him as a 5-6 hitter personally) Sign or trade for a middle infielder most likely, as he wants a top of the order hitter. Do these things and keep the payroll around 140 million. Which with our current state of being, we're at around 135 or so RIGHT NOW, after signing our arbitration guys and our automatic renews...... Basically, we better all get used to the fact that Harden is gone. Because unless we literally got someone to pay Bradley's entire contract, we're not going to have the funds to sign Harden.
  3. Bob Nightengale tweeted about an hour ago that Tampa is the "clear cut" favorite to acquire Bradley. The Kaplan thing isn't being talked about anywhere other than here from what I can tell anyway, although I don't know what Texas Ranger message board is worth anything(if any).
  4. This is Hendry being a "player-friendly" GM at his finest right here. It seems like all the players like him alot and it is good to build up loyalty actually. But, you do it with guys like Aramis and Z, not guys like Grabow, who are easily replaceable. To me, the only POSSIBLE silver lining in this move COULD BE that we non-tender Heilman, instead of giving him the 2.5ish or so, it's going to require to pay him through arbitration.
  5. Total money outlay would be 27 mill being paid by the Cubs for Millwood and 23.7 heading out with Bradley and Miles. I guess for the current year though, we'd save about 2 mill or so from our payroll, open up a roster spot and have 3 mill a year in dead money for each of the following 5 years.....Assuming ANY of this rumor winds up being true obviously.
  6. you misread something. next year will be the last year of his contract and he'll make 12m No, it's his signing bonus. They had deferred it until 2011, before it starts getting paid. By the looks of what was said in the original post, we'd be on the hook for all of it.....
  7. Holy crap though, I didn't realize Millwood is due 15 mill from 2011-2015......I guess I wasn't expecting it to be THAT much. I guess they better take Miles if we pay all of THAT.
  8. If we can make this happen, I'd be quite allright with it.
  9. Yeah, I agree. We've got 3 guys who have some sort of value right now and if we want to, we can go get DeRosa back as well. Stevens showed some signs last year in the majors and could be a decent middle reliever for us in 2010. My guess is he's huttled back and forth between Iowa, but he could stick all year possibly. Hearing callis' comments on Gaub are extremely encouraging as well. I've been very impressed with his numbers from 2009, although the blip in the AFL kind of sucks. Still, he's almost certainly going to make it to the majors as a LOOGY at worst. And then you have Archer, who's a boom or bust guy obviously, but almost definitely has more value now than when he did when we got him.
  10. Coleman: 4 pitches that hover around average with a good change, good feel for pitching, either ends up in middle relief or back of the rotation Searle: Great life on his sinker, works with a slider, has a good future if he improves Actually, the telling quote on Searle was that he has a good future if he works harder at his game. There was an article a while back about him, questioning his attitude, I believe. Maybe he didn't get along with his teammates or something to that affect. He hasn't been playing baseball all that long, if I remember correctly actually, right? It'll be interesting to see if he gets bumped up to Tenn or if he sticks in Daytona next year. He's still very young for High A as it is.
  11. Both still have quite a bit to prove honestly. However, if you look at what Jackson has done to date, albeit in the lower levels, he HAS to be doing better than what any of us thought he would be doing. If people are down on Vitters and it appears alot are, it's because of his struggles in Daytona after his callup. Granted, I would THINK that how he's done in the AFL have at least helped his cause somewhat with the naysayers. He's still just turned 20 afterall and is younger than Jackson. So, in the end, I think it's a combination of both Jackson doing better than what was expected AND Vitters struggling in Daytona. That said, I would still expect MOST publications to have Vitters ranked higher than Jackson, just maybe not BA for now......
  12. Please Explain.... Other than Age, what does Granderson have over Lee? Lee is a better run producer and has a better glove at his position and is a better hitter. Granderson has good speed but he's not a base stealer and he's not exactly an impressive lead off hitter with those numbers. Lee also isn't a platoon player at his position. I'll give this one a shot and see if it's the same answer SSR eventually says. The first thing is he's a decent amount younger and just entering his prime, while Lee(who obviously had a great year this past one) is (supposed to be anyway) past his prime. Secondly, Granderson is a "bargain" as far as money goes, as he has 3 years left on his current deal at a very decent rate. While Lee only has one year left and it's at 13 mill(not bad, but not a bargain either). Thirdly, Granderson plays a premium position where it's much harder to find his skillset than what Lee does. That's my reasoning anyway..... Oops, he beat me to it, but much of the reasoning is the same anyway. :D
  13. What was mentioned about Coleman and Searle?
  14. Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I'd like to get him for sure. And I think he's an extremely valuable player, but if someone else got him, I'd be OK with it too. Hearing what some of the packages detroit thinks he's worth is laughable.
  15. Dolis and Gaub. I knew Dolis was throwing well, but hitting 100? :-)) Can't say i had heard that before or I would have mentioned him as a lock. I didn't include Gaub strictly because of his struggles in the AFL and the fact that he most likely projects as a LOOGY.Not sure how BA looks at guys like that..... AZ Phil even mentioned that if anyone could pitch themselves OFF the 40 man this upcoming offseason, it'd be him with how he's thrown in the AFL. Granted I figure Callis isn't reading TCR for Phil's updates, but it influences me anyway. :D) Damn. This is really exciting to see. We have solid top end talent AND we have solid depth as well. It's really nice to see these type comments about guys that barely register with us even. Barney, Adduci, and Cales get little talk, so it's nice to see that they may be more than throw-ins, if we decided to deal them.
  16. Not that I disagree, but Callis is contradicting himself already, isn't he? It was him who did the Midwest League and ranked Archer, but not Burke, right? And now he's already changed his mind, I guess. As for the other guy who makes the top 15, I'm guessing it's either Colvin, Coleman, Searle, or Raley.......I wouldn't have thought Coleman had a shot, but since he's listed with the best change and the best control within the system, I figure he's got a chance.
  18. If only 4 of the next 16 on the overall top 30 are hitters, I'm guessing that they are Burke, Colvin, Castillo, and Barney. With 12 of the next 16 as pitchers, I think 9 are locks, with them being Coleman, Caridad, Searle, Archer, Huseby, Antigua, Rhee, Raley and Kirk.
  19. If you piece together the thought of Castro being in the top 25 neighborhood at least, with B Jackson and Vitters somewhere in the middle, with Cashner, Lee, and J Jackson all having a chance to be in the bottom third of the top 100, it's fairly obvious to me that oursystem is heading back towards the top 10 in baseball quickly. While I guess we won't get there this offseason, I think we will be next offseason anyway.
  20. Anything at all about some of the Pac Rim guys? Jung, Kim, either Wang, Na, or Chen? Haven't heard much as far as scouting on any of them whatsoever. Any tidbits on Antigua possibly?
  21. Castro in the top 25? Wow, it's awesome to see how much pub he's gotten since the season's been over. We've seen it coming with the season he just had, but I didn't think for a minute he could move up THAT far. Hell, when the season was over, I was still wondering if he had a chance to ovetake Vitters for our overall number 1, as I'm sure most were. I had seen AZ Phil mention Vitters as possibly starting in Tenn, but hadn't heard it anywhere else either. You kind of have to wonder if this is at least POSSIBLY to do with the fact that Aramis has an opt out after 2010. I'd like to see Vitters have some success at Daytona in an ideal world, but he's hit very well in the AFL, so if they think he can handle it, I guess all we can do is hope for the best. I disagree with Jay and Brett Jackson starting off in Tenn as well. I think Jay begins next year in Iowa personally, especially if the reports are true abput him and Ryno not seeing eye to eye. And while I can see Brett ENDING the year at Tenn, I see him beginning it in Daytona at the very least. If I thought anyone was going to skip Daytona, it'd be Flaherty honestly, due to his age. I also don't see Lee jumping to Daytona next year, UNLESS by some chance we traded Castro(which I truly don't see nor want to see happening)
  22. Thanks. For some reason I was thinking that THIS started the compilation and just the overall top 100.
  23. Are the rankings that BA has for the Cubs overall top 10 DEFINITELY how they'll be ranked in the overall top 100 as well? I would think so, but is there any chance we still see Vitters higher on the list than Brett Jackson? Or possibly Lee over Cashner? Hell, for that matter, I guess I wonder if there is a chance Brett Jackson still misses on the overall top 100? That said, when Callis answered the question the other day of"is Brett Jackson going to be 3 in the Cubs top 10?" with a flat out "no" I guess I'm not too surprised at him getting the 2 spot. All in all, I'm happy with the fact that our system is definitely on the rise again, little shocked that Watkins made it over Carpenter and that neither Archer or Burke made the top 10, especially considering Archer made the Midwest League's top 20.....
  24. According to TCR, there was discussion today on ESPN 1000 where it was said that the Tigers are looking for major league ready players as a return for Granderson. No idea, if this is actually true, but lets assume it is for this discussion anyway. They have Gerald Laird at catcher, what if they want Soto as one of the pieces in return? If they want Soto/Marshall/Guzman, is that something we should consider? Or what about Soto/Wells/Guzman? Too much? What do we think Geo is going to do next year? I figure he settles in midway between the two years myself.
  25. The best thing about this, is IF he's actually available, we have another option and wouldn't necessarily have to overpay for Granderson. Play the two teams against each other and take whichever one(assuming they're both truly available) will take the lesser amount of prospects. It doesn't look like there are that many teams out there looking to "buy" this winter as it is, so this could actually bode well for us.
