  1. Going into last year, I thought the Cubs were a mid 70's win team. And had very little upside, to boot. So yes, this year's squad isn't necessarily any better, on paper, than last year. But the upside and the flexibility, is world's different. In a great way. As far as Hendry's teams underperforming? Other than 2004, not once have I gone into a season thinking we were a legit threat, other than the year's we made the playoffs. 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2011 all turned out fairly close to what we should have expected.
  2. These 2 comp picks have gone unnoticed by the casual fan.(not us) but, it really signifies a huge change in philosophy, as Hendry probably would have kept Aramis and definitely wouldn't have offered Pena arb. These 2 picks will be guys that immediately slot into our top 10, or close anyway. And may even be guys that have fallen, due to signability concerns. The bottom line is this draft and the next are of the utmost importance to us, and it's great to have the extra picks this year.
  3. Yeah, Szczur is going to make BA's top 100, so he's probably close anyway. That said, he's probably a guy that teams could either love or hate, so while top 100 lists are purely for fun, his true value lies with whoever we're talking to. In a way, he reminds me of Anthony Gose: Not the tool set or anything, but his value varied quite a bit as well, until last year, where he kind of became a consensus solid prospect. I'm trying to remember who Toronto gave up to get him, but it seems like they were thought to have gotten killed in that trade, if I remember correctly.
  4. Knobler thinks they'll stay in house for the 5th spot, but Leyland's already kind of came out and asked for more starting pitching, so I'm hopeful.
  5. Plus guys like Szczur, who had to be close to making the OF list. And the ability to go sign Soler, who'd be higher than Brett AND guys like Hernandez, Candelario, and Torreyes, who could all conceivably make these types of lists next year. We just really, really, really need to find some pitching. Both from dealing Garza and in the draft, early and often.
  6. I think they've always been willing to part with Turner personally. It's the secondary parts that have been and may continue to be, the hold up here.
  7. We hopped on the "spend big on the draft" bandwagon way too late. But, there were plenty of teams already on it, with more probably joining each draft. That said, I believe we'll still have some teams spending less than others< even now. Plus, it's how each team views the CBA and finds loopholes, that's going to have advantages. I see no one out there better equipped than us to do that either. As for B2B's statement about waiting on prospects to establish themselves before they have value? Why? Prospects are the best currency a team has. Gio Gonzalez was dealt for a group of guys that have never played in the majors before. Same with quite a few others. Prospects certainly have value and 1) you want to trade them before they hit the majors, in case they don't pan out and 2) you don't trade someone who's already panned out in the majors anyway. Not if they look like they're going to be very good. Some teams, the Blue Jays, Padres, Rangers, Rays, maybe one or two more, can go trade for anyone they wanted to RIGHT NOW, because they have the systems to do it. That's what Theo wants and that's what I think we'll have by the end of this season.
  8. I'd try and hold out for Crosby or Smyly as well, as much as I like the 2 top guys, these are our 2 best chips we may trade. Need some sort of depth added, to offset the risk factor of only getting 2 guys back. If not Smyly or Crosby, make them add a couple of lower level guys, like Paulino and Vazquez. At any rate, I still see no reason why the Tigers want Soto.
  9. I'm guessing Theo's wanting anotther high draft pick next season, to where 2012 is kind of a "throw away" year. I figure the idea is to be out of it by the deadline and sell off Soto, Demp, and Marmol at that point, with Soriano gone before then, probably DFA'd, and Garza/Byrd dealt by spring training. With the idea of bringing up Brett, Rizzo, Cespedes(if signed) and maybe a pitcher from the Garza deal as well, around midseason. Maybe have an inseason tryout at closer as well at that point. So it gives us a solid feel for what we've got heading into 2013. Even if we're selling off, I don't see fan apathy setting in, because of all the excitement some of the youngsters will generate. Kind of a good situation for us: We'll still have solid attendance, due to all the youngsters, in my opinion. The one issue though, is we may not be all that bad right now, unless we DO move Garza and Byrd. I could see us as an upper 70's wins type of team, due to the fact, we've gotten depth in our rotation and some upside even, with the lineup. Sell off a little more guys, we're not all that bad right now........
  10. That guy is the biggest joke on Twitter.
  11. All it tells me is they REALLY didn't think Flaherty or Gonzalez was the longterm 2B answer. Even though, I wanted to see Flaherty get a shot at being a utility type guy. I guess they like Lake more, basically. Although, I have more doubts that Lake could stick all year in 2012 than Flaherty. Still, I guess it's a risk they weren't willing to take.
  12. I enjoyed 2003 more, because I "knew" that it didn't have to happen right then. We were set up great longterm. Hell, I thought for sure 2004 would be THE YEAR, especially after adding Lee, Maddux, and Nomar. 2008 seemed rushed to me and a time we needed to capitalize quickly on, since we were aging.
  13. I brought up Brignac originally as a guy based on his minor league numbers basically. He had 20 homer seasons(or close anyway) for 3 straight seasons at 19 to 21, from a, A+, and AA. He really hasn't had regular at bats in the majors and I could see where Theo wouldn't mind giving him the shot to see if he could get that back. If so, he's definitely a better option than Barney, if not, he becomes the new Dewitt for us(and we trade Blake, if we haven't by then anyway)
  14. Odds Ray and Ed are currently giving Cundiff the mother of all beatdowns?
  15. I'm figuring if we make a deal, it'll be for a major league guy, because I really think Theo feels we've got our longterm 2B in Torreyes. I know he's a ways out, but I think he'll see AA at some point in 2012.
  16. Levine has mentioned in his last couple of chats and has brought it up as a blurb in an article or two as well, that he could see us adding a 2B to the team, as Theo views Barney more as an excellent backup, than as a starter. To me, with as much as it's been brought up now, it seems like Levine knows something here: the question is who could we be targeting? If we are after someone, my guess is it's another younger guy with at least a few years of control. The first team that comes to mind for me is Tampa: They have a need at C and also have too much SP at this point. Could we be looking at Brignac as a starter at 2B? Some sort of Soto for Niemann/Brignac swap? If we move Garza, it'd kind of make some sense. I can't see Tampa heading into the year with Molina as their starting catcher and I don't think we truly care about 2012 anyway, so Soto could probably be had. Anyone got any other 2B options? It just seems like Levine knows something is going to be done, but I can't find any 2B that make sense. Hell, I don't even know if Brignac is a better starting option than Barney is. Still, thoughts on finding a 2B. I'm all for something other than what I brought up.
  17. He's old for a "prospect", but even Darvish will show up on BA's top 100, because he's never played in the majors. Cespedes' contract is the most interesting thing for this entire offseason to me honestly. Is he going to need some time in AAA? Most likely. Probably half a season or so. Hell, at this point, with his residency dragging on longer than most thought, it's probably starting to cost him a little money and the longer it takes, it could get worse for him. But, he's gone from the 30 mill range, all the way to 75ish by some reports, back down towards 50 or so. He's a risk, no doubt about it. But, the exact type guy(Soler even moreso) that's tailor made for us, in our current state.
  18. Yeah, I agree, Peyton made Dungy "look" like a good in game coach. To me, him and Lovie are pretty much equal.
  19. Really? He's definitely considered a top 10 guy.
  20. Anything on Soler or any other IFA's?
  21. Send him and Carpenter over for Jacobs and consider the Theo comp situation closed.
  22. If it's remotely close at 6, I figure we'll take the college guy, bat or arm, in hopes he'll contribute soon. I just don't want Marrero, even if he IS the highest floor guy in the draft. Zunino would be great.
  23. The K rate doesn't bother me THAT much when a guy is really young for his level. This is really meant for Turner, who's rate isn't eyepopping. Porcello's is more worrisome, as his K rate is almost nonexistent. But, my main concern with him is his service time. A reasonable contract may not be possible with him. I'd take Turner 100 times out of 100 over him. Would be OK with him as a 2nd piece, but would prefer Smyly, Crosby or Castellanos to him. Turner is the key to any Detroit deal.
  24. You don't think Garnett or Pierce are tradeable or just not going to get you much back? I'd think they're movable, even with Pierce having 2 years left. But, it's a weak FA class coming up(especially with Dwight limiting things). I guess I'd ride it out too, but I think some teams would come off a bunch of picks and some usable players to get those guys. Hell, I'd give up the Bobcat pick we've got for Allen, if it were up to me.
  25. And I'll go on record as saying it's a very scary thought to possibly see the Celtics in the 1st round of the playoffs.
