  1. Sounds like we may actually take someone.
  2. I'll put it here, in case its not anywhere else.... MLBN is showing a doc called Joy of Wrigleyville tomorrow night(Thursday the 8th) at 8PM EST. No players are interviewed, its all about fans. I think Costas is the host, Cusack narrates.(what a horsefeathering combo) At any rate, its probably going to be good, even with those two attached.
  3. You're right, we don't know the inner workings of deals. Cutch and Sale are 26 mill in 2017 though. So, signing Dex and adding Archer(or Quintana) would work financially. Hell, it would have allowed them to trade off Gio too. We don't know what truly WAS an option. But, based on who was available, this looks like a very bad allocation of resources to me.
  4. And the Cubs did something they hadn't done in a while. So, win-win?
  5. I'd have been perfectly fine with him back for that or even 5/95 if that's what it took I'd have rather given Brian Schlitter 5/95 than Chapman.
  6. I obviously love prospects, but when you're in their spot, you've got to go for it now. Bryce is gone soon enough. Max is a pitcher and getting older. Looking at untested minor leaguers to fill important roles in your pen, if you're them, should be a non-starter. I'm unsure of their exact monetary situation, but they went into the meetings thinking they could get both Cutch and Sale.....And were bidding on Melancon on top of those goals. So, I'm certainly not thinking that money for Dex was an issue.
  7. Glad he's back in the AL. Now I really, really want the Marlins to get Jansen.
  8. The problem with this trade is that the Nats could have signed Dex for just money and used those prospects and Robles to add Archer(and maybe Colome too) As it is, they've got a CF, evidently aren't getting an ace, and are trying to find a closer without prospect inventory now.
  9. Quintana will bring back as much or more than Eaton just did.
  10. I've been advocating Doolittle. But after acquiring Davis, who's got injury questions, I think I hope we stay away from other trade candidates with injury concerns. If he was a FA, I'd be in. If we go after a lefty pen guy, my preference goes Logan, Blevins, Dunn, Wood at this point. Not sure if I can remember any trade candidates, outside of Doolittle and Justin Wilson, who would be fine, if the acquisition cost was small. Edit- I guess Brad Hand is available and is fairly interesting.
  11. The Nats went into the meetings with the idea they could trade for both Sale and McCutchen. Good job, Nats.
  12. I keep thinking about HOW Otani comes over next year and there's one very plausible scenario. He signs a one year deal for 10M or so, with an immediately granted FA clause. Like Cespedes got after 4 years. Who'd sign him for 1 year and their entire bonus pool, plus the most money they can trade for, plus the 20 mill posting fee?(30 mill basically, plus a bit of crap they give up for IFA money) Practically ANYONE. He'd pay for himself with attendance spikes and thru the revenue he'd generate. That team would also get a head start on trying to re-up him. Hell, I guess that can be done at any point too? Even if not, he's worth it to anyone from a revenue standpoint. And especially for a contender getting an elite guy, in what amounts to trading for a guy in the last year of his deal.
  13. My understanding is that the 2 year penalty for going over the "limit" that was in place with the old CBA carries over to this CBA. So they'll have the roughly 4.75 mil pool of money to spend, but can't go over 300k on any 1 player next year. 2 year penalty (as opposed to one year)? Is that because we went over a second time in 2015-16? Nope. We took advantage and only got a one year penalty(Rangers too) before it turned into a 2 year penalty. Once it did though, the teams just looked at it as (need 3+ years talent in order for it to be worth it) and just overspent by even more...... Just a stupid system.
  14. There are a bunch of solid bullpen arms left. My guess is we'll wind up with one of Blevins, Logan, or Wood. Probably Wood, because he'll come cheapest and because he's kind of considered a glue guy type, which we value, on some level..... Current Pen Locks Davis, Rondon, Strop, Edwards, Grimm Fighting for spots Duensing, Zastryzny, Pena, Leathersich, others not worth mentioning So, if we DO sign a Ross or trade for a SP that definitely pushes Monty to the pen, it literally puts us down to one open spot, if we go with a 12 man rotation. Which tells me we're looking at a 13 man staff for most of the year, especially with our positional player versatility. Only fight would be Seal Boy versus Szczur(who may still be dealt) for the 12th spot, if no injuries..... It also kind of makes me think Rob Z is beginning the year in AAA as a starter, for depth. Along with whatever else we acquire for rotational depth. There are a BUNCH of RHRP's still out there and musical chairs will leave more than a handful without jobs. I could see us getting a Matt Belisle type(just an example) as an NRI, that makes the team. At any rate, our pen is in pretty damn good shape and another move or two is great. The starter depth is the most interesting thing out there for us, as far as I'm concerned.....
  15. What's going to make this thread funny is Javy's oWAR will beat Soler's......
  16. [tweet] [/tweet]
  17. He might not be able to play until after the ASB. Maybe that was he highest offer/only 2 year deal he had out there. He also has incentives that can pay him another 15-16 mill over those 2 years.
  18. If this gets done, its time to sign Kenley and just throw poop at the rest of the league. I wish, but that's so not what is gonna happen. We're just gonna pocket the new money and see what we can buy next year or the year after. Obviously, they won't. But it'd be great to see them over buy once. Then trade from a strength. You could sign Kenley and trade Strop and/or Rondon(even with minimal return) Adding Davis and Kenley only costs us 12-13 mill total from starting point. Its not how we operate, but it'd be awesome to see.
  19. If this gets done, its time to sign Kenley and just throw poop at the rest of the league.
  20. I'm trying to look further than a one for one here, since we're using one of our chips on a bullpen guy and we're looking for starters to stash in AAA for help during the season..... They've got guys that fit this bill..... Miguel Almonte has been awful for a few years now. Throws very hard, comes with former top 100 pedigree. Brian Flynn is a giant lefty that came out of the pen last year, but has been a starter. Fairly intriguing honestly. Kyle Zimmer- if they'd throw him in, he's hurt all the time, but his upside has to still be something..... Josh Staumont- Throws REALLY hard. If he's a starter, there's big, big upside. Matt Strahm- I'd love to acquire him, just don't see why they'd deal him. Eric Skoglund- Giant lefty, knows how to pitch. This is my guess at who we'd target in a deal with Davis. Alec Mills and Jake Junis- these guys look like slightly better than Dallas Beeler type depth. At any rate, my guess is if this gets done, its not a one for one and we're getting at least one guy off this list. Edit- Of course, Levine just said its a one for one lol. Still, who knows?
  21. This is just crazy. Giving up more than Soler for one year of a reliever with arm problems that restricted him to 40 innings last year would be horrendous. If Davis is considered truly healthy, he'll command more than Soler. Soler just doesn't have much value. If Davis is sold off as a risk, Soler is enough.
  22. Yeah, getting a World Series win absolutely sucked utter and complete ass. Chapman's character issues aside, I was and am fine with the move that was made. I would not be a fan of trading for one year of a closer as an annual strategy, though. I'd just as soon offer a bit more for assets with more control. That said, my primary concern here is Davis' health. Mine too. My honest guess is we would look at this as a bridge move to allow for Carl to move into the role.
  23. This is really the most important thing. I don't particularly like Davis for Soler, but a lot of that is the number of potential SP moves I would like going way down. If they can do that without taking on too much risk or depleting the system, then it's fine. With them talking about guys with options that they can start off in AAA, I feel like Szczur can net a guy like that. Candelario can get that type of guy and the guy he nets may be a former top 100 type or even current one. If they go deeper than that, it'd be Happ. Who'd net something very interesting too. Caratini may net us a guy that's a 7th starter type. My guess is Candelario and Caratini ARE moved over the offseason, but that's it.
