  1. Well, it has been a slow rumor day, so I have come up with a "what if" scenerio. What if Gallagher goes to the pen and Lou tests him out in the 8th inning spot? The Cubs have a couple of weeks to try this experiment. If Gallagher fails this test, then it blows my what if. However, if Gallagher dominates in the 8th inning, then here comes my what if. The Cubs could offer a package to the Indians centered around Marmol. I have been trolling arond the Indians boards and they have had it with Joe Bo. Marmol could be the new closer in Tribe Land. I am not advocating trading Marmol just for the sake of trading him. I would actually rather not trade him, but like I said, this is a what if. If I were Hendry, I would ask for a 72 hr signing window. If we give up Marmol, we have to make sure CC sticks arond for a while. I know I'm gonna get flamed for this post, but I would like to here some comments. Remember, this is a what if.
  2. I hope Marshall pitches a CG shutout. And the Indians have scouts there. :beg:
  3. I still say the easiest way to assure us that the Brewers won't make a play for CC is for the Cubs to put together another good streak of baseball and hope that the Brewers scuffle a little. If they fall 8-10 games back, I think they stand pat.
  4. this is also one of the first times they're in a position to make the playoffs. They were in first place at the deadline last year. What big move did they make then? Linebrink
  5. The best thing for the Cubs to do is go on a mini-hot streak for 2-3 weeks and hope to have the Brewers about 8-10 games out.
  6. The thing the Brewers have to worry about if thet trade for CC is what will their pitching staff look like next year. Say Sheets leaves via FA and CC signs somewhere else. Where does that leave their pitching staff? Gallardo Bush then what?
  7. yeah but sabathia is probably going to be asking for $20M a year. if you do that you've got about $60M next year going to 4 starters, and beyond then you've got nearly $50M a year going to 3 starters. tack on $13M for lee, $12M for fukudome, $15M for ARam and about $17M for soriano - that's $108M and you still need a bullpen, 2 more starters, 4 more position players and a bench. unless you're the yankees, this is not doable. I'd do the deal even if he's a 3 month rental. The problem is that there would be no guarantee of signing Sabathia to an extension after giving up Gallagher. I'm not sure Sabathia as a 2-3 month rental is worth Gallagher plus others. Gallagher looks to be an important part of the rotation for this year and in the future. I think if Zell has given Hendry the COMPLETE green light to do what it takes to win, then I would think giving CC an extension would be part of that plan.
  8. If he can get Sabathia, we all need to call him Saint Hendry.
  9. I think Hendry will do everything in his power to not let that happen.
  10. Gallagher might be a BIG bargaining chip at this point. The Cubs might just be "saying" that they are more inclined to keep him and not make him any part of a trade. Sean has had a pretty good showing in a sample size in the bigs. Who knows? It does sound like the Cubs are pumping Sean up to sound like a stud for the rotation for years to come. It could make Shapiro think.
  11. So basically, its a win win situation for you Vance. ;)
  12. Sabathia's line tonight: 8 IP 4 hits 0 runs 2 BB 11 K's
  13. CC's line tonight: 8 innings 4 hits 0 runs 2 BB 11K's vs. Reds. The Cubs really need this guy!!
  14. Does anyone know if CC has any kind of no trade clause?
  15. Molony talked to some "industry types" about C.C. Sabathia, and those guys suggested the Cubs and Angels could be the frontrunners. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ and further down................... Angels GM Tony Reagins has no intention of breaking from Bill Stoneman's model. Reagins does not intend to trade young players in a midseason blockbuster. Plunkett makes a good point in that the Halos would be worse off if they'd pulled the trigger on the rumored Miguel Cabrera deal. The Angels expect to fix their offensive woes with in-house options. The team ranks 12th of 14 in the league in OBP and 9th in SLG. Garret Anderson, Gary Matthews Jr., Erick Aybar, and Jeff Mathis has been easy outs this year. It might make sense to start working in Juan Rivera and Reggie Willits regularly. http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_9695037 I also read in another article, not sure where, that the Brewers are not really players in the C.C. sweepstakes. However, as we all know, things change. I do find this encouraging.
  16. Who is singing the 7th inning stretch tonight? Mike and Mike Greeny and Golic
  17. • The Indians have begun scouting the Yankees' system to see if they can find anything to interest them in case they decide to trade C.C. Sabathia. They have told teams they have to get better than the two draft choices they'd get if Sabathia left as a free agent. Sabathia, who's likely just a rental pitcher (though a great one), is believed to be interested in a "Johan Santana contract.'' Good luck there. Sabathia's a nice kid and he's lefthanded, but he should get into Johan Santana shape before anyone agrees to give him six years. The Dodgers, Red Sox, Phillies and Cubs also are believed to be interhttp://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/06/23/heyman.metsfirings/2.htmlested Intersting. No mention of the Brewers here.
  18. Didn't Marshal hit one against the Cards?
  19. Chicago Cubs The Cubs might be one of the more likely destinations for Bedard, as they are in high-geared win-now mode under Lou Piniella, and have a few young players that might be a fit. Currently the Cubs rotation consists of Carlos Zambrano, when healthy, Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster, Jason Marquis and Sean Gallagher. If the Cubs are willing to include Gallagher in a deal with third base prospect Josh Vitters, that might be the best the Mariners can do, and should be happy with that. Gallagher and tarnished center fielder Felix Pie would be interesting as well, though personally I’m not sold Pie is a big-leaguer. The Cubs have two future starter in the minors in Jose Ceda (No. 3-4) and left-hander Donald Veal (No. 4), that could be included in a trade. If I were the Mariners I’d pass on the Cubs since Ceda, Gallagher and Veal are No. 3 starter at best, Pie is marginal and Vitters is three or four years away. http://prospectinsider.com/2008/06/19/the-market-for-erik-bedard/
  20. Olney's Latest: Sabathia, Sexson Must-read alongside your bowl of Cocoa Pebbles is Buster Olney's Saturday morning blog post: If the C.C. Sabathia trade rumors were a horse race, he writes, as of today these teams would be the favorites: 1. Milwaukee Brewers 2. Chicago Cubs 3. Los Angeles Dodgers 4. Texas Rangers 5. Boston Red Sox The problem is, he notes, some of these teams may or may not be in contention by the trade deadline; and/or could be bluffing. Please not the Brewers.
  21. The article then goes on to speculate about who is available and focuses on Sabathia. I think it's becoming clear from all the rumors that we will be in the running for someone. Who and at what cost seem to be the only question. vance, I don't thinnk "at what cost" is going to play a part. Everything Hendry has done in the last 2 or so yrs, has been geared up to for a World Series run, which means, I expect Hendry is going into the deadline with a "blank check", so to speak, in terms of what he's willing to spend. The main question will be, who are the Cubs targetting. This certainly has the feel of a year - and a topline starter has the feel of a need - where we should go all out for a need, even if it's just for a few months. The question is, does Hendry have the guts? :-k
  22. I would do everything I could to keep Gallagher. I think this kid is has the potential to be at least a #3 starter, maybe 2. I really like him in the rotation now. Big Z CC Demp Lilly Gallagher
  23. Buster Olney also mentioned this on ESPN the other day. He said he hasn't heard any rumors, just pure speculatin on his part. The guys on ESPN1000 were discussing CC as well. He would be an awesome get, if he could stay healthy.
