  1. Hendrys motto is "You can never have enough pitching." He has an oppertunity to land one of the best pitchers in the game. If he thinks he has a shot, he will keep trying. He got Nomar when we all thought he couldn't. I'm sure he will make a big push for Peavy if he thinks he is close.
  2. If there is a way to get Peavy, Hendry will get him. I don't think this changes anything on the Peavy front. Remember the Cubs wanted BOTH Demp and Peavy about 2 weeks ago. I really don't think that will change.
  3. Cubs Re-Sign Dempster By Tim Dierkes [November 18 at 11:51am CST] 11:51am: Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times also says there's a four-year, $52MM agreement and Dempster will sign the deal today. I consider this an acceptable price. There's a health risk, but Dempster already had Tommy John surgery. He can probably maintain an ERA below 4.00. 11:47am: Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger has a source saying the Cubs and Dempster have agreed on a four-year, $52MM deal. 11:24am: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Cubs are "making progress" on a deal with Dempster. 10:50am: Rosenthal says the deal would be worth "slightly more than $50 million." 9:53am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are close to re-signing Ryan Dempster to a four-year contract. Depending on their ownership situation, the Cubs may still pursue Jake Peavy or Randy Johnson. They could also be in the mix for Rafael Furcal. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
  4. Yes, just like all signs were pointing to Roberts becoming a Cub last year. One heavily reported and discussed rumor was wrong so now they all must be! Had Angelos not stopped it, Roberts would be a Cub. The trade was agreed upon. If Peavy wants to play for the Cubs, he will. I think he does and will.
  5. So, in a nutshell, all signs are pointing to Peavy becoming a Cub. Is this correct?
  6. I sure hope he was being sincere, and not just telling a Cubs fan what he wanted to hear. From what you say Donnie, Jake dosen't seem like that kind of guy.
  7. Donnie, with your week long conversations with Jake, what do you think the odds are that he will be in a Cubbie jersey in 09?
  8. Maybe he will...remember, he posts late at night. Raisin, was that you that he gave the info too?
  9. Thats the only thing that I can think of. Unless Towers thinks he can get more than what the Cubs are offering elsewhere. Maybe DonnieD knows what hes talking about.
  10. 10:29am: MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Braves haven't gotten the sense they're any closer to a deal with the Padres. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
  11. The ticker bar on ESPN just said that MLB WILL allow Cuban to buy the Cubs. Did anyone else see this?
  12. 4:05pm: Ken Rosenthal has an update of the names that are being offered by the Braves for Peavy. According to Rosenthal, the Braves are offering Yunel Escobar, either Jo-Jo Reyes or Charlie Morton and an unnamed player believed to be a top prospect. Rosenthal does not have any details on the Cubs' package but notes that it is likely to be "fluid". http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
  13. 4:00pm: Chris De Luca has updated his earlier piece and now says Dempster is seeking five years, $70MM. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ We have to get Peavy if Demp leaves.
  14. I would guess Olsen will be involved somehow. Cubs trade for Olsen and swing him to the Pads with others.
  15. 3:03pm: Peter Abraham says that Kevin Towers has told Peavy that he will be traded and that negotiations have been narrowed to three teams. The Yankees are not in the mix as all three clubs are in the NL. Abraham speculates that in addition to the Cubs and Braves, the third team could be the Astros or Cardinals. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
  16. Rosenthal: Cubs Want Peavy And Dempster By Cork Gaines [November 6 at 12:12pm CST] Ken Rosenthal is working overtime today with his second column. This time Rosenthal reports that the Cubs are willing to give Ryan Dempster a four-year deal even if they land Jake Peavy from the Padres. The club also is willing to give Dempster a four-year contract, sources say, a decision that should put them in good position to retain the free-agent right-hander. Even though the Cubs are for sale, team officials apparently believe that they can absorb the four years and $63 million remaining on Peavy's contract while committing at least $50 million to Dempster over the same term. Rosenthal notes the close relationship between Dempster and Jim Hendry could keep Dempster from accepting a longer or more lucrative deal with another team. However, Rosenthal notes there would likely be a ripple effect on the roster if the Cubs were to resign Dempster and trade for Peavy. The Cubs would likely be unable to resign Kerry Wood. Several players may have to be traded to reduce payroll, including Jason Marquis. May have to opt for a cheaper left-handed hitting outfielder than originally thought. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
  17. 11:27am: Chris De Luca says the Cubs are in heavy pursuit of Peavy, partially because of steep contract demands from Ryan Dempster. He's heard Dempster wants five years, $75MM. No deal is imminent, but De Luca wonders if pitchers Sean Marshall, Rich Harden, or Jeff Samardzija could be involved. Samardzija has a no-trade clause. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ Marshall yes, Harden and Samardzija NO.
  18. 2:34pm: The Mets expressed preliminary interest in Jon Garland and Ryan Dempster, according to Ken Davidoff. Dempster's agent made it clear that he won't be re-signing with the Cubs soon. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ Sounds like Demp wants $$$$$$$
  19. In the latest update on ESPN 1000 Levine reported the Cubs were "seriously interested" in Peavy. Nothing new, just counterdicts what De Luca wrote.
  20. Cubs Rumors: Peavy, Sabathia, Hill, Roberts By Tim Dierkes [November 5 at 9:36am CST] Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times has fresh Cubs rumors this morning. De Luca's sources describe the Cubs' interest in Jake Peavy as "limited." Instead, the Cubs have "deep interest" in C.C. Sabathia. De Luca also wonders if the Cubs will entertain A.J. Burnett. The Cubs' payroll room will depend on free agents Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood, plus their ability to move Jason Marquis. Rich Hill's lost 2008 season killed his trade value. He'll be out of options next spring. De Luca's sources say the Cubs continue to pursue Brian Roberts and Raul Ibanez. Ibanez would play right field for the Cubs, even though he allowed 18 more bases than the average left fielder this year. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ Deep interest in C.C.? First I have seen this. They would have to trade Marquis and have a HUGE increase in payroll. Limited interst in Peavy. More Roberts. Sounds like a fun offseason.
