  1. Makes you wonder what in the heck is Rusch and his 3mil going to do now that Eyre has been signed... Well, Hendry seems to love having that "swing" guy. Unless that means he really don't want to rely on Wood staying healthy to have 5 good starters. (not calling Rusch a good starter).
  2. BBB, Hammond was a perfect example. How much cash did the yankees toss at him? I hate to bring this into the discussion, but does anybody think Hendry might be caving on the length of deals a lot this winter? Something about finishing below the Brewers might make him feel he has to win next year, even if it means giving one to many years just to get guys in the fold.
  3. Yes, as much as it pains me to like the 'veterans' Bruno has a point. Wouldn't you rather the veteran Dusty uses 80 times be in a 'good spot' in his career instead of Chad Fox?
  4. But what relievers did you want instead of Eyre? I haven't seen a list. And I do realize Wagner and BJ Ryan are out there - and as much as I'd like to believe we could get them for $3.5 a year, I don't think that's going to happen. I'm not trying to take on anybody - I legitimately can't think of a better Left RP out there on the market that'd be better.
  5. Yes, the good parts of this signing: No prospects lost (even though we need to clear some now) Ohman needs a friend in the pen. It will be nice when Rusch is shuffled (back?) into the 'pen, he's not called upon to be a LOOGY - which he cleary is not good at/comfortable with.
  6. It wasn't so much that I was upset about not liking the deal. It's not enjoyable to read page after page of the same stuff, new ideas? New reasons it wasn't good? Like I said previously, Sarcastic brought up a 'new' point about the unreliability of relievers - after 5 pages someone finally spoke up with this? The fact that my sarcastic post yielding this many "shame on yous" from this community is baffling. BAFFLE'D!!!
  7. I wasn't mocking anyone, I was replying with a differing view from the pervasive sense of anger/doom enveloping this thread. Not once did I call out a single person/plant/animal/post.
  8. The funny part about all of this is that I legitimately agree with almost everything that has been said. This signing is too long, and for too much money. Not necessarily because of Eyre, but because of the nature of all relievers (outside of the upper echelon ones, I wonder what those are like?). Sarcastic pointed out this point beautifully. First time I saw it mentioned. Also, like it has been pointed out, the offseason barely started. There's a lot of work still to be done to bury Neifi on the bench.
  9. At least nobody has corrected my grammar yet. Somebody call a mod! There's a post that disagrees with me!
  10. But, that doesn't mean we can't start the... How long until Eyre's arm spontaneously combusts after 3 straight days of coming back in to pitch after a rain delay? Prediction: May 2007. He'll be good this year, so then it'll be extra bad when he goes down because we won't need address the bullpen anymore next year because of Eyre's dominance this year.
  11. This is a big market team, have you ever seen the $ the yankees spend on (worse) relievers? Get over yourselves. At least he didn't give away any of your precious minor league gold. I can't even imagine the reaction if he traded away some awesome minor league talent like Bobby Hill, or Hee Seop Choi, or any of the trash in waiting we have 'stocked' in the minors.
  12. We traded Jon Garland in 1998, it took about 7 years for it to really bite the Cubs in the ass. That wasn't Hendry anyway, it was the brilliant Ed Lynch. Willis was I believe the 4th biggest part of the deal on our side. I also seem to remember reading something to the effect of the Marlins thinking WE pulled a fast one on Dontrelle (the day they got him, they worked him out and something about him throwing half the pitches to the backstop with his THEN seemingly unrepeatable motion). Crap happens, especially with pitching prospects, also don't forget Lohse. Of all the 'big time' and 'decent' prospects Hendry has traded away...ONE has come back to bite him. As much as I wish we had him, let it go. Johan Santana was a Rule 5 pick, Jeff Bagwell was traded for a reliever...crap happens. It just seems like it happens more to the Cubs than anyone, but it doesn't.
  13. Doesn't ANYONE realize that Schmidt's velocity is way down? HE'S PITCHING HURT, it would seem, he is the LAST thing we need. Especially so when you consider what it'd take to acquire him.
  14. Rotation: Prior Zambrano Santana DWillis Harden - would also consider Garland just for the 'should still be a Cub' factor Closer: K-Rod Pen: H. Street M. Gonzalez J. Crain C. Cordero BJ Ryan Dempster (12th pitcher assuming it's the Cubs...guh) Infield: D.Lee M. Tex R. Weeks C. Figgins R. Furcal - crap year, still like him, for no valid reason (insert Freel instead) D. Wright Mauer/VMart - doesn't matter H. Blanco - someone has to make outs... Outfield: C. Crawford M. Cabrera Abreu Dunn Berkman Threw that together fairly quick, not sure how much would be the same if I looked at it longer.
  15. i guess we should start complimenting him every time he successfully does a double switch without sending the wrong guy up to bad the next inning Haha, totally. I had forgotten about that (worked hard to forget it), ugh. Do they keep stats on total double switches? I think that'd be fairly interesting to see.
  16. Yet another example of Baker as a member of the "Ol'e Boys Club" blindly following traditional baseball thinking and not using common sense or numbers. Ramirez hits righties and lefties well while Burnitz does not even come close to Aram whether it's against lefties or righties. There is absolutely no INTELLIGENT reason why Burnitz should be batting ahead of Ramirez. Extremely valid point, but when did waiting for an ordinary intelligent decision become such a pipe-dream? Makes me sad.
  17. Sorry if I can't jump on the back of "hey, good job ONLY letting your starting pitcher go 9 innings" I just can't. I have to disagree. Yanking Z after 118 pitches was maybe one of the most obvious moves in history, has it gotten so bad that we actually start complementing him for not doing the dumbest thing possible?
  18. What's this I'm hearing about you having trouble with your TPS reports?
  19. Could more people just watch the games? If you did watch them, you wouldn't think that closer was a problem...guhhhhhhhhhhh Dempster was a better pickup BY FAR than any of the other closers this past offseason (Percival, Benitez, Kolb). You can't trade for players that aren't available. I'm sure I'm the 1,000th person to complain about this, but that seems like only a fraction of people who still think that Hendry messed up with closers. Remember, he didn't intend Hawkins to be the closer. This year, he talked up Dempster all offseason, but since Dusty HAS to have his 2 lefties in the pen, he was forced to misuse Dempster in the rotation. The pen, is sort of his fault. He tried signing proven guys to long contracts, but that doesn't work. So he got smarter and decided to just bring up young guys and retreads (Rusch is, by all accounts, a retread) for the bullpen and rely on YOUR COACHES to gel them into a consistent group. The Braves and Twins do it every year with less. Any of the other things, you CAN nitpick with what he's done. Most notably, partial ignorance of OBP (until recent moves), or not acquiring enough speed or defense. Somebody start a 'days until Grady Little' countdown... 10?
  20. Outside of the obvious no trade clause problems, I really don't see what any team would give up that could be considered fair value for how good Wood really is (and he is good, that is not the debate). Don't forget that he's getting paid quite a bit (especially considering his love for the DL) - unless the Cubs just want to dump him a la Sosa (won't happen, ever) there are only a handful of teams that would take him on anyway. This would leave the potential destination list at...noone. Move on. He's not going anywhere. We've all already grown accustomed to this DL hokey pokey (you put your right shoulder in...)
  21. Exactly. Dump Remlinger, Neifi, Hollandsworth for WHATEVER you can get, if for no other reason than to take them out of Dusty's hands. He's shown that if he's got 'em, he'll play 'em. I like Hollandsworth, as a 4th OF and pinch hitter, and that's why he was acquired, it's just a shame he's being misused at the expense of a prospect with a pretty good upside. Neifi, I don't really like, but he is a backup being misused also, gone. It's Cedeno time. People marvel at how the Braves win every year, but nobody really tries to emulate them it seems...(at least in the NL - I think the Twins, A's and Angels do an admirable job of bringing in new talent).
  22. I look at it this way: No matter how good a pitcher is, he simply cannot win a ball game by himself. All he can do is hold the other team down as best as he can and hope his offense can win the game. Many good pitchers win relatively few games because their team sucks, and many mediocre pitchers win a lot of games because their team has a powerhouse offense. Any pitchers win-loss record must be viewed in the context of their teams quality. Wins are totally a team stat, and a pitchers win total is simply the most overrated stat in baseball. I couldn't have said it any better myself. I second that.
  23. Umm... the 50 points of batting average. The versatility. The alarmingly lower K rate. OBP aside, I don't understand the fascination with Dunn. Huff plays RF/LF/1B (poorly), so does Dunn, I don't see how that's a plus to him when you are comparing him to Dunn. If you're going to look at #s, try Slug% or HRs. As I previously mentioned, Huff would be extremely difficult to deal for, at least the Reds operate in this universe. After the Kazmir trade, the DRays seemingly operate in a parallel one.
  24. I don't understand the fascination with Huff. He's older, slower and worse at defense than Dunn. Does he seem like he'd be easier to obtain? Because it seems to me that the opposite is the case. I would probably fall over if BJ Ryan got dealt. Same goes for Abreu, or Griffey (he leaks!).
