  1. Works for me. I would also accept Wilkerson in place of Gomes. Who knows how much they value him with the new regime there (I would assume highly, but who knows).
  2. but he would have $10 million more guaranteed with the Cubs offer. When he becomes the next Alex Gonzalez at Chavez, he won't get those last two years worth of money. But to equal the total $ the Cubs are offering, he would only have to make $4 million a year the 2 years after this deal. Considering that's not much more than we'd give Neifi in 3 years with inflation, I find it hard to believe that (if healthy) he would get less than 4 million a year for 2 years after this current deal.
  3. The Cubs offered more (not more per, but more) with more guaranteed years. That's the weird thing about this. Turning down a 5-year deal for a 3-year deal flies in the face of all agent logic. Not really, in 3 years, he'll earn ~40. If he signs even a 2 year deal at that exact same rate after that deal he'd end up with far more CASH than the Cubs offer over 5. It only defies one aspect of agent logic, length (security). But it obeys the first one - get as much cash as possible, at all times. Furcal must feel like he won't get hurt. And, as pointed out, he'll only be 31 when that deal is up. Provided his skills/stats don't fall off (and what pro athlete ever thinks they will?) he'll still be demanding a large wad of $.
  4. So do you think we're going to end up signing like 4 more pitchers? Maybe like 3 more catchers and Rubby Perez?
  5. If he comes to the Cubs 1. Will they make a hat small enough to fit his head? 2. Will they make him wear it on his head bill forward? Inquiring minds want to know! But does he want a hat that fits his head? I think the majority of his power is derived from the baby-esque features. Pitchers don't want to be mean to a child, so they don't throw at his face when he tries to bunt for hits? He really needs a mustache. I would probably be on the bandwagon for trading for him if he had a huge stache. I can relate to mustaches more than I can to being a baby. I haven't worn diapers in years, but I wear my mustache everyday. SABR that! MCBA will rule the next decade in baseball! (Mustache-Centric Baseball Analysis). All good points. The high socks, girlish stature, smallish head, hat asque. That has Little League World Series conotations. I wouldn't want to bean a baby either. At totteler though that is a horse of a different color. How sweet would it be if he had a Rolly Fingers handle bar Mustache? I was thinking more along the lines of Yosemite Sam, but that'd work too.
  6. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA Seconded. Someone alert Derek Lowe that his story has been bumped down a slot on the "funny things the LA media 'did' this year" BADOOM CHING!
  7. Please quantify your optimism. Are you optimistic that Furcal took our original offer and this report is just wrong? Or, That we upped our bid to beat out the Dodgers and this report was prematurely made before we outbid them? How about Optimistic that hendry still might get furcal so he doesnt have to go into panic mode. I'm not sure, I'd almost like to see panic mode. At least it'd be something different, right? All that I know is that the last few years are not what I would like (in all respects really - wins, player acquisition, managing, excuses).
  8. Because you're about to embark upon a zany adventure? Or could it be that Babyface Pierre could end up being our "christmas bonus" this year. Does that trump a years membership to the Jelly of the month club?? See, now there's an idea I can get behind. Field a team made up entirely of jelly. It'd be a fun (and tasty) way to get rid of our current problems. Although I'm sure we'd have to sit idly by watching older, moldy jellies play day after day while new, more delicious jelly sat on the bench.

  10. And the plot thickens... I can only hope that this somehow comes back to that Derek Lowe + LA medio story. Best story of the year in my opinion. INFIDELITY'D!

  12. I'm with you on this - but wouldn't that mean that we would be putting the ball in the court of MacPhail to hire BETTER people? That makes me want to throw up more than the post about Juan Encarnacion did - which is a lot.
  13. Please quantify your optimism. Are you optimistic that Furcal took our original offer and this report is just wrong? Or, That we upped our bid to beat out the Dodgers and this report was prematurely made before we outbid them?
  14. Let's not say things we can't take back, it's not like they were worse than the Brewers last year. Oh wait....
  15. He's not. We are going to have a real fiasco on our hands. I just hope he gets really creative in Dallas. No choice now. The FA mkt is drying up quickly. This could mean saying goodbye to prospects we like... As long as Baker is our manager, that might be the best use of a great number of our prospects. Sad, and true. The only time he played young position players was when Hendry traded his other options out from under him. Get that crap out muh face!
  16. Hendry is just Dusty's enabler. Both are problems. Yes, but let's not absolve Dusty of any wrong-doing here just because Hendry got outbid (foolishly) by the Dodgers. Oh, I wasn't absolving Dusty of anything. Dusty is a boob. Ok, good. I wouldn't want to have to dip into my Neifi-related Rage Reserves (NRRR) to argue with anybody about it.
  17. Yes, if we are going to make a trade with Tampa, let's get an OFer. And, no, I don't consider Huff and OFer. He's not good at it. He was bad at 3B too. He's a 1B/DH. Last time I checked, we didn't need that. Gomes, Crawford would be great, and to a lesser extent Gathright. Tampa has to do something, they don't have enough ABs to go around when you add in Huff, Baldelli, Delmon Young, Upton (who could eventually end up in the OF when they give up on his attempt at SS).
  18. So, you're saying Dusty isn't part of the problem? Hendry is just Dusty's enabler. Both are problems. Yes, but let's not absolve Dusty of any wrong-doing here just because Hendry got outbid (foolishly) by the Dodgers.
  19. For how much everyone complains about Hendry - he really is a significant upgrade over Ed "I'm a terrible GM" Lynch and Andy "Get me some mo' ex-Twins" MacPhail. Not that we should be content, but it's a step forward. Possibly the next guy will be another step forward? Or, just maybe, when Dusty isn't here in 2007, we'll see how a well managed Hendry assembled team would fare? This isn't likely, but it's possible. And, if so, it's Hendry's fault for hiring/not firing toothpick mcgoo.
  20. You're right, and that makes me sad. Has anybody told him that you can get quality offensive players that play good defense? (Bradley) It doesn't have to be a one or the other type of thing, right? So let's set the over/under on ABs for Neifi this year at 550? Neifi was going to start anyways. He got starters money. If we snagged Furcal, Neifi would get his PA at 2B. All we did today is limit the damage JH tries to do to this team. Neifi was a blow to the 2006 and 2007 Cubs already inflicted upon us by our GM. Theo in '07!! Please don't make me think about Neifi in 2007. I've already convinced myself that we'll have a different manager then. If used correctly, he 'could' be a useful player (worth about .5 mill, not 2.5). Maybe Dusty will realize how bad of a GM Hendry is and jump ship to LA before the season. The organization really seems to be clueless. So, you're saying Dusty isn't part of the problem?

  22. Please don't say things like that. People are trying to live here. Shocks like that are just unnecessary.

  24. I don't buy any of the reports about Soriano. They were (both?) proffered up by sites that seem to get off on pulling random stuff out of nowhere. Almost all of the players that we've been linked to in rumors post somewhat strong OBPs (Bradley, Furcal, Wilkerson) and to go after Soriano seems to be a great departure from that. I seem to remember that Hendry has made somewhat tacit admissions that this team needs to get on base more. Trading (what would a large price at that) for Soriano just doesn't compute. But then again, neither does anything to do with Neifi. NEIFI RAGE HAS EATEN THE WINTER
  25. That's bad, but it's not as bad as what we were trying to give Furcal. There actually exists the chance that Burnett would exceed the value of his contract. Not that the chance of that is large, but it destroys the chances of Furcal living up to $13 a year (which I place somewhere around zero).
