  1. luv the bunt...stay out of the DP and get a chance for a sac fly.
  2. am i the only one seeing something special for cliff?
  3. glad marquis isn't taking a loss in this game.
  4. 13 strikeouts in each of the last two games. it's hard to score runs when you can't even put the ball in play. and it's not just the young guys, either.
  5. you beat me to the punch. i heard kurkjian say that at the all-star break last season 20+ players had at least 20 homers. this season there were 8. the fact that steroid/amphetamine testing has been ramped up is one hell of a coincidence.
  6. In the first tonight the Cubs had bases loaded with no outs and one run already in. Then a strikeout, pop up to short and fly out to right. In the 7th, a home run led off the inning followed by a single and error on the RF that put a runner on 2nd with no outs and our 3, 4 and 5 hitters coming up. CALLED OUT on strikes, CALLED OUT on strikes and ground out. What the hell kind of baseball is that? 2006 Cubs baseball.
  7. glad i wasn't the only one who noticed how bad miller was last night. there's no sense in commenting on what an idiot joe morgan is, but miller is typically pretty solid. last night he made more mistakes than i could count. i remember him talking about the cardinals and calling them the cubs; talking about the mets and calling them the cubs and, of course, referring to derrek lee as carlos lee.
  8. how huge is it to essentially give 2 starters the day off and win with your #4 starter against a team equally as hot as you are?
  9. ground ball is the worst nightmare. at what point does JH say the hell with kendall and DFA him to give soto the job?
  10. make or break AB for kendall. coming through could spark him; failing could ensure there is no spark.
  11. was anyone watching gameday on fri against the reds when it kept screwing up and saying "runs scored" then showing an out and vice versa?
  12. i like our chances on sunday. hamels and glavine are nothing alike and hamels had his two best pitches working on monday - the straight change and a 94 mph fastball. glavine's fastball and change aren't as far apart in speed and my guess is that soriano yanks at least one of them off the dirt into the left field seats. i also expect ramirez and lee to go the other way all night and one them will get one out. cubs 6, mets 4
  13. Guys, Gals- I notice Jake Fox is killing the ball at AA - 14/48/.298/.862. Does anyone know about his defensive and game calling skills? I'm wondering if moving Barrett was made easy by how Fox is hitting.
  14. I think the "we must sign Z" mantra was appropriate until he turned into the 4th best pitcher on the staff for the first 6 weeks of the season. We might still be screaming that if Lilly, Hill and Marquis weren't playing the way they are, but because they are, Z's troubles are that much more disappointing. Four runs in the first to the Nationals?! Three in the first to the Pirates?! These are teams he should dominate. I'm not saying we should immediately start seeking a trade, but until he straightens things out and returns to the Z of the past few seasons, I don't think having a 5 or 6 for $18M per contract on the table is prudent. Maybe something is wrong with him physically, maybe it's all mental. Either way, for him to be stinking like this during a contract season is alarming. And why in the world is veteran pitcher who has been as successful as he has having mechanical issues? He's not Tiger Woods re-working his swing.
  15. Agree totally. Let him work out a contract with a team that will give us a couple of big prospects and let them deal with his "great performance"/"awful performance" roller coaster. Players that refer to themselves in the 3rd person have a way of becoming more trouble than their worth. Now that he's pitching like crap, he may have entered that zone.
  16. Folks, The more I see Zambrano pitch this season, the more I'm wondering if we shouldn't be thankful that big contracts were frozen before he was signed to a long-term deal. We all here the adage about players performing well in their contract season, but for some reason that doesn't hold true with Zambrano. He's been a wreck this year and his ERA is 5.89 as I type this. Is that really a good investment of $17/18M per season? Hill is showing signs of being a dominant pitcher, Marquis has been lights out, Lilly has been steady. Would we be better off counting on Guzman or another minor leaguer for one spot, sign another above average pitcher and then use that money we would have given to Z on a stellar shortstop (A-Rod?) or OF with power? [Home run to Bay...ERA is now at 6.09] I could envision Theriot being the everyday 2B next season with Soriano in LF, Pie in CF and A-Rod at SS. If Pie hits .220 who cares? His glove will keep a bunch of runs from scoring and we'll have plenty of offense to slug it out with teams. Put him in the 8 hole and tell him to relax. Just an idea.
  17. $200K...that's it? C'mon H, give the guy $200K more just to end this saga. So help me, if we pay $17M per year for Lilly/Marquis and set off a crapstorm of bad feelings with Z over $200K, I will....well, I'll do nothing. But it will upset me.
  18. you start jones over soriano? would that make a-sor the most expensive bench player ever?
  19. Apparently someone's been Dusty-ized!!!!!! in 2004, CI hit .288 with a .330 OBP and 25 steals before getting hurt. i think he's the most logical candidate to start the season in the leadoff spot (if it's not going to be fonzie), but if he falters then you have to consider other options. i'm not at all advocating putting him there and leaving him no matter how he performs (which is what dusty would have done). i only like the idea of him there because of the speed he would provide leading off.
  20. no matter who else joins the roster, lee should remain in the 3 hole. he's a power AND average guy while soriano is mostly a power guy. my lineup goes like this (assuming no more hitters are signed): 1. Izturis - SS 2. DeRosa - 2B 3. Lee - 1B 4. Soriano - CF 5. Ramirez - 3B 6. Jones - RF 7. Barrett - C 8. Murton - LF i would not argue swapping murton and derosa, or ramirez and soriano. i like soriano in front of ramirez because his speed could give ramirez more RBI opportunities by getting into scoring position with 2 outs or scoring on a double from first. the same can't be said about ramirez being on ahead of soriano. the scary thing about this lineup is how much progress murton might make. it's easy to overlook his .290 avg in his first full season because the team was so bad, but what if he gets it up around .315 - .326? wow.
  21. From the Sun-Times: The former New York Yankees second baseman, who played left field last season for the Washington Nationals, will become the Cubs' leadoff man and play either center field, replacing departing free agent Juan Pierre, or left field. Bruce, do you stand by your statement that Fonzie will play RF?
