  1. I don't really have much of substance to add to the discussion, but I liked this Jake Fox quote from an article about Wells on Cubs.com: "[Wells] still gives me a hard time about it," Fox said. "In the Minor Leagues, he'd say, 'I'd still be catching if it weren't for you, Fox.' I said, 'I'd be catching if it weren't for me.' " Sorry if it's been posted elsewhere.
  2. Its not even slowly. He is a well rounded hitter. I just wish he could stop making those pesky fielding and base running mistakes. Agreed. The Riot is actually one of my favorite players on this team. I'm hoping we can move him to 2B sooner rather than later and I believe he can be the starting 2b for years to come on a very successful team. I disagree. Whatever value he has is primarily derived from the fact that he plays SS. At 2B, he'd be more of an offensive liability.
  3. This is the post that erased any doubt that this is a joke account.
  4. What you say up to this point is, for the most part, true - sure, we could nitpick, but generally, it's all logical. However, your further argument - that the Cubs have been to the playoffs more times than most people - doesn't really help your point much. You said that "Hendry's job is to put the Cubs in the best possible position to win the World Series every year. Period." But just because they've made the postseason 3 times since he's been here does NOT mean that he's put them in the best position to do so. I'm in agreement with Goony (I think it was him), who said that the Aaron Miles-type signings (the ones that cost a relatively small but nonetheless substantial amount of money for essentially zero or even negative value) are the most aggravating, and Hendry is guilty of more than enough of them. Those signings alone prove that he's NOT putting his team in the best position to win the World Series. Then, of course, there are plenty of other complaints, some more legitimate than others, that further demonstrate that Hendry has actually been underperforming, despite his 3 playoff appearances.
  5. Don't forget that he's also a Muslim terrorist, so impeaching him should be no problem. So here's what we've got: Throws like a girl. Muslim Terrorist. White Sox fan. Communist/socialist. He's left handed, which is, as we all know, a sign of the devil. Even scientists acknowledge this fact (why do you think they use the word "sinistral" for "left," huh?). He said "Cominskey." White Sox fan. Open and shut case.
  6. So I knew Ichiro was a bit eccentric, and I had heard the Cleveland quotation before - but this stuff is hilarious. He sounds awesome, although I might be a bit uncomfortable being around him all the time. I mean, how do you respond to most of this stuff?
  7. Somebody pick up the baby in the mud puddle outside. Just because it's not perfect doesn't make it useless. It's just another tool that when used properly works well most of the time. He says in the article that it's still fine to use OPS for quick analysis. He just thinks it should stop being used for any serious, in-depth analysis, which I think is totally reasonable.
  8. I think the Cubs are still the best team in the Central, they're not that far out of first, and we're less than half way through the season. I think the Cubs are the most likely team to win the division, and even if they don't, the wild card is a possibility.
  9. I lived in L.A. for three years, and had plenty of In 'N Out while I was there. I've since moved back to the East coast and eaten my fair share of Five Guys, and I can say without reservation that Five Guys is far superior. In 'N Out is good, definitely a step above your typical fast food burger, but Five Guys burgers are in an entirely different class. Plus, what you get on your burger is much more customizable at Five Guys, and the fries are 1,000,000x better.
  10. I'm no expert, but a cursory scroll through his baseball reference page suggests he hasn't been particularly lucky or unlucky. His BABIP on the year is .312, which is lower than his career average of .322 (and he hasn't posted anything under .323 since 2004), but his LD% is down too - it's at 16%, compared to a career average of 22%. Traditionally, BABIP is supposed to be ~.120 higher than LD%, so maybe he's been a bit lucky, but not hugely. His HR/FB% is right at his career average (which is good, because it's been well under his average the last couple years - this could be a sign his power is coming at least partially back). He's also been hitting much fewer ground balls than last year, which is another good sign. I'm not inclined to worry too much about his low LD% yet, because he's historically been a slow starter - until 2005, the book on him was always that he was awful for April and May, and then became an offensive force from June on. I'd guess it's fairly likely that his LD% will be back around his career average at the end of the season.
  11. You've piqued my curiosity. Why Zimmerman? I mean, he's obviously a fine player already, and may be coming into his own offensively this season, but I have a hard time seeing him as a top-5 player to build a franchise around, especially when David Wright also plays 3B, is young, is a good defender (although not as good as Zimmerman), and has shown himself to be much better offensively.
  12. the people in your league are idiots. scherzer i can understand being available, but wieters and price? come on. I can't. 3.38 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 53 Ks in 50 2/3 innings? That plus the hype would make it pretty ridiculous for him not to be owned.
  13. My team also sucks, so it's good we're facing each other. We can both feel like we're competitive this week.
  14. So I'm in an NSBB league, and my team (despite miraculously being in first place after one week) is very mediocre, as a result of a poor draft. This was because of a number of factors that meant, I'm ashamed to admit, a) I was under-prepared for the draft, and b) I was heavily distracted during the draft. It didn't help that technical issues led to two unintentional picks, neither of which I'm crazy about. ANYWAY, I'm basically trying to find a creative way to make my team competitive - my pitching is particularly weak, both starting and relieving, so I figured picking up some high-upside starters might be a good idea in case I get lucky. Well, Rick Porcello fits the bill. He's obviously very talented, but he's very young and untested. Is he worth keeping on my roster? I picked him up from the FA pool, and when Max Scherzer gets off the DL, I'm gonna have to drop someone, and he might wind up being the victim. What do you guys think?
  15. In my mind and heart, there is only one true sham closer, and I will never forget him. But Gregg sucks. I think Lou would be overreacting if he demoted him. Leave him in the closer role, and he'll probably do fine. Not great, but fine.
  16. Wow - a lot of UNC hate going on here. And I really, to be honest, don't get the Hansbrough hate. The guy is very good, but it's not like he's some cocky [expletive] out there (i.e., he's not J.J. Redick). He just plays his game, and happens to be very good at it (granted, he is very awkward looking). And I agree that Ty Lawson is amazing - he's been my favorite on the team (and I like more or less everyone on this team) since early last season. I also think that you could make an argument that he's as much a POY as Blake Griffin is. But it would be a stretch. In any case, GO HEELS! And Cubs, too.
  17. I know this is the NCAA Tournament thread, so maybe I shouldn't even bring this up, but judging the quality of different conferences by their performance in a single elimination tournament to which only a portion of each conference is invited is pretty much useless.
  18. Did you scrap the league? I can't access it.
  19. The commentator was screaming for a 5-second call the entire time as well. Scheyer was blatantly fouled well before he traveled. On this play, two wrongs make a right. If that's a "blatant" foul, then Tyler Hansbrough should go to the free throw line about 10 times more than he already does, and the entire opposing team would foul out in the first half. And you don't want that. Plus, it would be FOUR wrongs, not two (one for the "foul," three for the travels). Yes, Tyler Hansbrough should go to the line 10 more times a game than his ACC-leading pace. I didn't say that he should - I said that if what happened to Scheyer is considered a blatant foul, then Hansbrough WOULD go to the line literally every time he's under the basket. He gets manhandled much worse than that all the time without getting calls. Which is fine. But that was definitely a travel by Scheyer, and the so-called foul that took place beforehand does nothing to mitigate the fact that VT got hosed bad by the refs there. As an aside, I think the few UNC-Duke people on this board do a decent job of keeping the sniping to a minimum (this post excluded, obviously). We understand that this is basically a thread about the midwest, especially the Big 10, and Raisin talking endlessly with himself about UCLA.

  21. It looks like it's getting pretty full, but I'm up for it if there's still room. However, I AM a pretty big idiot. So Truffle may not want me in on the game. I will care about the game, though, and I'll keep up with it.
  22. Supposably. Irregardless of what you guys think, I would of let it go. You're both emphamous for doing that, though. The others, I see all the time. But this one is new to me.
  23. Ha, marine biologist. I had the same thought. A marine biologist?
  24. Man, I love this Tar Heel team. Ty Lawson = awesome. Also, Northwestern won a game. Which is good, but I'm not really used to it.
  25. NO NO NO! I'm sure it's nothing but speculation, but still.
