  1. Hey, at least we got 11 baserunners in 8 innings. While not terribly impressive, it's not bad for the Cubs. Also, we got our first complete game a lot earlier this season than last.
  2. Except, sadly, Dempster, the one guy who really ought to be a ROOGY. Dempster in 2007: vs. LH: 1.23 ERA, 11 K, 5 BB, 1.09 WHIP in 7.1 IP vs. RH: 3.38 ERA, 8 K, 1 BB, 0.66 WHIP in 10.2 IP ROOGY? I think not. I could break out the sample size argument, but I hardly need to - that line against righties looks better, other than the Ks (ERA against lefties? How does that work? The only way I can think of is entirely meaningless). In any case, his three year splits against lefties: .286/.394/.401. Anybody who allows an OBP of nearly .400 is not getting the job done.
  3. So just every game for a half a season. No big deal.
  4. Except, sadly, Dempster, the one guy who really ought to be a ROOGY.
  5. Nice.
  6. Forgive me if this bothers anyone, but I figured if we have a Samardzija thread, we can have a Veal thread - I'm more interested in Veal, anyway. Plus, I'd like to have a thread where we can easily check up on him without browsing through all the discussion and boxes threads. SO - here goes: first of all, what's with all the walks? It's good to see that his last two starts have been solid, but his first four were just awful. Do you think it was just adjusting to AA, or does he occasionally suffer from serious control problems like that? ETA: Since this is the Veal Thread, I guess I oughta have a link to his MiLB page.

    A trade

Hey - KMac and I made a trade in the new players yahoo league. It's already done, but I wanted to know what everyone thinks, cause I'm new at this: I gave: Robinson Cano and Magglio Ordonez for Brandon Phillips and Lance Berkman I think it's a pretty fair deal. Cano is better than Phillips, and Berkman is a good bit better than Ordonez, and he has 1B and OF eligibility, but Ordonez is red hot, and Berkman's not hitting for power or a particularly impressive average right now. I needed SB, and Phillips is likely to have a lot more of those than any of the other three players. Plus, I thought I might have to bench my regular 1B, Mark Teixiera, until he stopped sucking, but it looks like he's heating up, so I can just put Berkman in my OF.
  8. Yeah, MLB.tv doesn't seem to be working - does anyone know what's up?
  9. I didn't know Bill O'Reilly was a Cubs fan.
  10. I have nothing to add except that I find it hilarious that someone referenced the Marquis signing as a defense of Hendry.
  11. There's a good level of irony going on here just with the title.
  12. We don't. We have Jake . . . and that's it.
  13. I've found it is really hard to have an intelligent conversation on anything anywhere with anyone. You know, me too. Then again, my IQ is 36.
  14. but it still comes in behind "playing with Hank Aaron." Who played with Hank Aaron? I bet that was cool. Dusty did. No way.
  15. and he's a cubs fan Who is this mysterious jersey cubs fan ?
  16. What I don't understand is that people are taking this poll seriously.
  17. A curse dies every time you say "I don't believe in curses," unless you clap your hands.
  18. I think it's mostly luck, as a result of a high standard deviation in terms of both our run scoring and our run prevention (i.e., our runs - and our opponents' - come in bunches). The Cubs currently have the third best run differential in the National League, behind the Mets' completely absurd +47 and the Dodgers similarly silly +32. The Cubs, by comparison, are a pretty measly +11, but that's still good for third in the NL and tied for fifth in MLB. The closest competitor in the NL Central is Houston at +4, then Milwaukee at +3. So, while it is a bummer that we seem to get our runs at the wrong times, I'm not as convinced that this team is doomed as some seem to be.
  19. When I first read the title to this thread, I thought, "It's the Cubs - that's what they do."
  20. ETA: In the long run, Murton has to worry more about Soriano moving to LF than anyone else. I think we all know who wins that fight. Because it was a liner, he took a few steps back before realizing that he'd have to move up. If he dove I think he would've been able to catch it -- there was just very little margin for error. I think he would've had to run full out with a good jump (or take a risky dive) in order for him to make the play. I think you're talking about Lee's single, which Soriano probably could have caught, as you say, with a perfect play. What the quotation is referencing is Scott's double that went over Soriano's head. Having seen it, I really doubt he could have gotten there without, again, a perfect play. The ball was hit very deep to straightaway center.
  21. I don't think the original poster's main point was about Floyd playing over Murton - I think he was mostly concerned with Theriot coming in to pinch run for Murton. And I agree with him on this point. I think Theriot is a great guy to have on the team, and I hope he gets some significant playing time this season. However, I see no real reason to put him in for a player who is superior offensively AND defensively, at least in LF - and who isn't terribly slow, either. Especially considering that Murton isn't getting all the starts in LF, it seems foolish to take away the ABs that he does get on the days that he starts. Regardless of that specific issue, I do think that Lou is over-managing a little bit. He's pinch running frequently with Theriot, and I think in Marquis' start against the Reds, he misused the bullpen a bit. For right now, since Lou still has my good graces, considering all of the good things he's said and done, I'm chalking it up to A: still getting a feel for the individual members of the team and B: still being a bit in Spring Training mode.
  22. Rich Hill = awesome. Any pitcher who A) strikes out a ton of guys and B) doesn't walk too many guys is GREAT to have. I really enjoy watching him pitch. I was also glad Guzman got in for the last two innings there, even if he didn't pitch quite as well.
  23. Me too, and it stings. Grady is definitely one of my favorite non-Cubs, though. He's gonna be real good for a long time.
