    Livan Hernandez and Micah Owings. We could tie this thing up. I am not giving up yet. This team is very tough at home. That is why last night was crucial. One win at home. Then big Z in Game 4. You'd take your chances in Game 5 right? I mean, the worm has to turn right? EVERY break has gone AZ way so far. Silly cardinal fan. we don't get breaks. 98 years and all. Don't give up. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Germans? Shh, he's on a roll.

    If he puts up anything less than his Iowa line this year, I'll be real disappointed in him. Also, Carlos Marmol will move to the rotation and STILL have an ERA under 2. Or else. Soto hasn't been good enough to help the team win in the postseason. Next postseason will just be a repeat of this again. What?

    I have an inordinate amount of manlove for Kerry Wood. I'm glad he's pitching. That's about all I can think of to keep me afloat at this point, though.

    While the Cubs are definitely still in it, they have to take 3 of 4. That means (correct my questionable math if I'm wrong), in order to have an even chance of winning the series, they'd have to be three times better than the D'Backs. They're not. The advantage definitely lies with Arizona (I'm still optimistic, though!).

    I'll never understand why some ballplayers are so obtuse that they don't adjust to the particular pitching style they are facing that day. Are they just not intelligent? They must not be. A normal person would think "Hrmm, every time I try to pull that outside pitch, I make an easy out. I should quit doing that." A major leaguer thinks "Hrmmm.... I should just keep doing this. I'll be able to pull it eventually!" Whatever happened to just hitting the ball hard and not trying to place it? They probably think: if I let this guy pull me out of "my game", then I'll lose my lucky stance and be screwed up for weeks. Maybe....now stay with me here......being a good major league hitter......is really really hard. Psh. What do you know?

    He will almost certainly not be worth anywhere near what he gets. Stay away. And while I'm not sure we can land ARod, I think SS is where we should focus our attention. If we can upgrade significantly there, you can call it an offseason.

    Boo. It looks like I'll have to miss games 1, 2, 4, and 5 in their entirety. That SUCKS. A lot.

    Disclaimer #1: this is mostly pure speculation. Disclaimer #2: Rich Hill is one of my favorite players. Rich Hill has made it clear through post-game interviews and the like that the mental aspect of pitching is hugely important to him - and it seems like he can lose confidence fairly easily. That could help account for his low QS% and high ERA relative to his peripheral stats. I admire him a lot for recognizing that the mental aspect is important for him, and taking strides to fix it - he's talked a lot about sports psychology books that he's used, and a positive mental approach, etc. Basically, I think he's very good, and he's got a bright future ahead of him. I'm glad we've got him.

    Murton and DeRosa > Theriot and DeRosa Yes, bumping Murton to keep Theriot in the lineup at 2B is a very bad idea. Thank you. I know it's an insignificant detail, given the impossibility of signing Rodriguez, but whenever people suggest moving Theriot to 2B, where his value is minimized, in order to keep Murton, who is a decent hitter, out of the lineup, I cringe. It's just such a bad idea.

    I'm not sure I would want to go into the 2008 season with an OF of Soriano, Pie & Murton. While I like the individual players, I don't think the whole adds up to enough offense. Of course there is still the business of finishing this season in a most fantastic way. This "next year" stuff is a tough habit to break. I would if we got an upgrade at SS. If not, we probably need to upgrade the outfield somehow (I like Vance's Fukdome suggestion).

    Give me an example of when a player is somehow more valuable than what he produces. For the sake of discussion...not being argumentative. This is purely hypothetical, but suppose Soriano, Ramirez, and Lee have seasons typical of their career norms with a supporting cast eerily similar to the previous season in which there was a 15 game improvement in wins. The biggest statistical difference happens to be the addition of DeRosa, who puts up an ERA+ around 105 while his career number is closer to 90 and also provides a defensive upgrade at his position. An argument for DeRosa as MVP under this scenario isn't ludicrous. I think it is ludicrous. Simply outperforming career norms doesn't qualify as a most valuable season. even if his added value means more to the performance of the team? Seriously, though, just because DeRosa is (in your hypothetical) the primary statistical difference between the two teams, that doesn't mean that he's more valuable to the current team. If you took DeRosa out and put a replacement level player in, the difference would likely not be as big as if you took ARam out and put a replacement level player in.

    If DeRosa put up an ERA+ of 105, all while playing a solid second base and hitting well to boot, I'd have no trouble giving him the MVP.

    My two thoughts: 1.: No reasonable discussion can really be made until everyone agrees on a definition of "momentum." 2.: There are a couple of people who are talking in extreme black and white here, and in all cases, there's little evidence to support either side. People who are saying momentum "doesn't exist" in baseball are probably wrong, except for a very limiting definition of momentum. Additionally, cubbiechris, you're being a bit ridiculous. You've repeatedly stated, with absolutely no explanation or evidence, that the idea that momentum could exist or be prevalent in one sport and not another is silly. Is baseball different than other sports? Yes. Could it therefore have different characteristics, and thus be different with regards to momentum? Yes. I'm not saying it IS, I'm just saying that to deny that it's possible is a direct contradiction of the obvious. My opinion, and it's nothing more than an educated guess, to be honest, is that momentum exists to some degree, but its effect on baseball is pretty minimal, perhaps to the point of being neglible. It's almost certainly less powerful than in football and basketball, for reasons that have already been pointed out.

    Chipper Jones and Hanley Ramirez are both deserving. While I generally don't like it when pitchers get MVP votes (that's what the Cy Young is for, right?), Jake Peavy will probably get some votes.

    This team is full of players that are easy to like. But here's my five, in no particular order: Lee - great all-around player, also obviously a great person Ramirez - great hitter, works his butt off (look at his defensive improvement), took a major pay cut to stay with the team, seems to be a quiet leader Wood - ditto Lee. Also, he was more fun to watch than anyone I've seen when he was starting. Dempster - hilarious, good guy, doesn't take himself too seriously Hill - I like his curveball, and that he came up through our system Also DeRosa, Lilly, Theriot, Zambrano, Howry, Murton, Soriano, Soto, Barrett (I know, I know), Prior (he'd be on there if he was playing), Marmol, and others deserve mention. Maybe I just like everybody.

    I lump myself with those who don't understand all the Howry hate - even early in the season, it seemed to me more like a slump than anything. I'm glad he's on the team, as I think he's a pretty consistently solid reliever (to the degree that such a thing exists). Eyre, on the other hand, I don't trust despite his recent turnaround.
