  1. in the last calendar year his OPS starts with a 6 and is 3rd-worst among qualified SS we're right back to the "he drives in runs with his glove" copium of the Hendry era
  2. a guy coming off 44 & 81 wRC+ played at an MVP level, sometimes better to be lucky than good he represented 26 RAR vs. just 16 from the rest of the team combined – happily pointing to the halcyon days that were 12th overall in team wRC+, you might just be very easily satisfied
  3. and i know that this might sound incendiary, but i really do maintain this point he's strongly disfavored offense at nearly every turn: Andrelton Simmons over Correa/anyone else; Yan Gomes over Willson; Madrigal over (fill in the blank); Swanson over 3 far superior bats; total apathy in the Harper, Seager, Soto offseason talks running to agents for Sogard, Hosmer, Barnhart, Descalso with his tongue hanging out; he's just not somebody that values good offense which i personally can't stand from a watchability angle
  4. if i'm to be quite honest Jed Hoyer baseball is almost definitionally un-fun to watch – the clear preference for good starting pitching and strong defense; in contrast to that, a complete apathetic disinterest in running out a good lineup, and the excessively frugal piecemeal approach to bullpen construction that typically follows the same script: low scoring games with late inning blowups to decide the game there'll be a few bad starters that they'll string some hits together against, so that's about the best it gets for fireworks

  6. i mean, if we like PCA and Ballesteros as long-term answers then those two specifically are fairly replaceable or are names that can be altered to fit a different competitive package with such a deep farm, there should be various permutations to satisfy whatever value spread A's seek; we don't really seem to feature any MVP-upside potential in the system so a big splash like this is perhaps the best use of prospect currency i'd personally try a little harder to keep Caissie but that's purely just because i hate watching bad offensive teams so much
  7. yeah, not a chance that's even remotely current data
  8. the only reason to seriously pursue a pending FA like Bregman is adopting a win-now attitude toward this season, so immediately remove our best (only?) power hitter from consideration entirely he might be an intriguing option simply because our system is so deep and he'll likely garner pretty tepid interest, in that something to the effect of Hodge & Mervis or Arias and (either) Franklin gets you most of the way there i would suspect unless he has a sudden unlikely power surge soon, he should be gettable for pieces you won't ever lose sleep over, unless Dana Brown is too stuck on his "back of the baseball card" nostalgia in which case you just move on
  9. for a while Marlins have had a much richer supply of pitching than everyday players, so i have to assume that was a driving impetus for that move and it could have been easily excused if they had ever been able to keep more than 2 of Alcantara/Perez/Meyer/Luzardo/Garrett/Cabrera/Rogers intact at any particular time
  10. this is in the short running for the worst idea that i've ever seen proposed on this forum; i'm actually a little mad now at just how terrible this idea is the guy who wondered about the possibility of offering a 3/15 extension to Ryan Sweeney made better sense, than doing a thing like this
  11. tfw you trade away Adolis Garcia & Zac Gallen
  12. he said the #6 bit a couple of times, yeah
  13. the pythag record is still just 20-18 and nice to say that this is all despite key injuries (no other team experiences these hardships) but SP regression will probably hit way harder than the offsetting benefits we get from returning regulars all of this is to say, the bullpen and offense have to play way better to sustain any serious contention, and a trade or two is likely needed for the former to happen, and the latter should be seriously considered as well
  14. i'll tell anyone who listens that i firmly believe the Padres would be basically the Braves right now - a powerhouse set up for a decade of success - if Preller had any restraint
  15. i gotta wonder if PCA stays up for good when Belli returns and Busch moves to utility/DH role really cleaning up 2 problem spots defensively
  16. hey that's just the easiest default split i look to first hopefully his big month 13 months ago can be recaptured soon and we'll all let up our gripes
  17. last calendar year he's just 2.4 fWAR despite everyday PT which puts him in pretty unflattering company; maybe he goes on a surge and claws out of this grouping but none of these save Josh Lowe are valued highly by anyone – some were just bargain basement filler
  18. that's kinda the good and the bad of Jed's roster construction; having a team loaded with fairly mediocre players means you can easily weather the storm of a few injuries since there's not a ton of production to replace there, but it's also really tough to upgrade because none of these guys like Happ are a 'problem' per se, a flat 2 win regular doesn't kill you but on the whole it really caps the upside of the team's trajectory
  19. this guy was abysmal, i don't really too much recognize whatever that was as a professional baseball game
  20. i quite honestly think it's the opposite; i'd argue Jed would seriously pause at this offer bc nobody's likely to top a current top-75 prospect and MLB-ready #3-4 SP with upside for more Mason Miller is appointment viewing for me, but his injury history is already pretty scary and these types of guys just have such a short shelf life that any responsible GM would seriously hesitate to surrender too much system talent on the off-chance a power arm remains intact for more than a few months at a time Felix Bautista would've seemed like an untouchable a year ago, i remember prevailing opinion insisting Joel Zumaya and Joba Chamberlain were untouchables with the false assumption they'd be shutdown relievers in perpetuity different circumstances but Jed was content to part ways with an effective controllable RP in Effross (seemingly) fully knowing how transient RP health and performance is
  21. it's also very 'build the entire plane out of the black box' logic
  22. this is true but also funny that what we're hoping for is his .234/.293/.280 expected slash line to normalize i know he can give us better than he's shown so far..like maybe an upper-mid-.500s OPS!
