eh, i would half-heartedly argue he's currently one of the best closers in baseball simply because every other closer is more or less injured at the moment
the best ability is availability!
Swanson being unable to close his glove tightened the margin to just a solo HR
Hendricks was batting practice
Smyly wilted
pitching issued 10 BBs
etc.
lot of things went poorly to lose that one that it's unfair scapegoating to focus your frustrations on one player
no i just meant that they're more or less the same "0.01% chance they turn into Blake Snell" brand of funky lefty
maybe he does and we'll groan but Busch is hitting ground running with a .400+ xwOBA anyway
had to double check the date on this, how could somebody gnash teeth about giving up DJ Herz Jr & a lump of clay for plug & play Matt Carpenter, ingrate lunacy, to me
that's quite literally his biggest strength, like there are so many other facets to QB play tangible & intangible where i can't tell you with confidence that he'll meaningfully succeed in the League or not but he's an innately great passer while Tebow was the clear worst in recent memory:

fwiw Chop Robinson & Adisa Isaac were blowing by Michigan's turnstile tackles and it's ironically a testament to JJ's importance/irreplaceable nature that they opted to use such extreme measures there to preserve him
in a somewhat apples to apples (Harbaugh offense) comparison his efficiency/rate stats were fairly comparable to Andrew Luck albeit w less volume
this is a fundamental problem badly hurting parity in the NFL is that there's less than a dozen difference maker QBs at a given time but you essentially need one (desperately) to be competitively relevant
teams cope their way into believing David Carr & Daniel Jones types can be that guy and blow such a massive portion of the cap investing in that player and have to skimp on supporting cast which in turn usually spotlights their QB's weaknesses; similarly the effect of trading so many assets to secure that guy high in the draft
Dak/Purdy/Russ on late-round rookie deals is such a salary cap cheat code really but not an easily repeatable recipe obviously
it's all predicated on "black-box-plane" logic, yeah the math on it – the conversion rate is 55% this year because teams often save their best gadget plays for the very rare instance they need to pull out a philly special or whatever
"the math says go for it" is a flawed concept because it ignores too much context
i've just seen people understandably confused about the decision to go for 2 after their last score
which imo is pretty indefensible from TB's end if your play there is a goal-line fade
at full strength i think probably not, but our best player's on academic suspension and there's not really a single functional backup PG to suitably fill in so we'll likely continue to lose all road games during Dug's absence
i really miss the Beilein days
