  1. Hendry is going to get his arse handed to him at the convention. It's about time too.
  2. Barrett is an offensive force, but we need to get him working on his D. Blocking balls in the dirt is a learnable skill. He definitely showed improvement with his footwork in nailing basestealers (it's not his fault our pitchers are so slow to the plate). As far as the run down SNAFUs, you can put that on the managers as much as the players. Ridiculous.
  3. i'm smearing the tines of my pitch fork with feces. look out.
  4. The had pretty good stats last year... .271/.340/.546 14 SB with 1 CS I hope the Cards resign him. Those are good stats for a corner outfielder? lol please keep him.
  5. I don't care about walker. Neifi is by far the better player. Just look at his D.
  6. atlanta overpaying for Furcal is the best news i've heard in a while. <<< not a Furcal fan. Marcus Giles would look good in Cubbie blue. It might actually make Chicago a preferred destination for his brother (and i like Marcus at 2B regardless). Hendry, I love you. Don't disappoint me.
  7. we paid Hawkins around 3.5-4M/year to set up. is it that much of a stretch to have dempster set up for 5M in this market? i think dempster gets the closer's job based on '05 performance (save percentage, not WHIP or K/BB) rather than money.
  8. an outfield of suspect arms. super. dunn has an average OF arm (no way does he have the gun for RF). murton and pierre both throw rainbows. i love what dunn brings to the table offensively though and his range isn't horrible for his size. we just can't have an OF full of crappy arms. we've done it before, re: 2003. please. you aren't honestly comparing the offensive production from sosa, alou, and lofton/cpat to lofton (years later), murton and dunn. lmao. great comparison. '05 dunn is roughly equal to '03 Sammy offensively, and '03 lofton was appreciably better than '06 lofton will be...so you're saying murton is far and away better than '03 alou offensively? He was obviously referring to their defense and throwing arms, IMO. no. he referred to being successful despite having crappy OF arms in '03. success comes from both defense and offense. '03 OF offensive production made up for the weak arms. that's what he's saying. by looking at the offensive production from that made up lineup (dunn, lofton, murton), it's easy to see the offensive production wouldn't be anywhere near the '03 OF, and therefore wouldn't make up for the runs given up due to crappy OF arms...and wouldn't be as successful as the '03 OF.

  11. yup. no pierre in CF please. i can't complain about the rumored interest in BJ Ryan though. i mentioned pursuing BJ in the Ryan Dempster extension thread and no one thought it was realistic. i guess there is one more [expletive] out there that thinks it's possible.
  12. PAP is basically worthless. Cubing the difference between the number of pitches thrown (after reaching 100) and 100 is ridiculous. That's saying it is 27 times worse to throw 115 pitches than it is to throw 105 pitches. Ridiculous. I'm not saying that you can't determine pitcher abuse with statistics, but if you are not looking at the right numbers, you're basically wasting your time. Factors that need to be considered when determining pitcher abuse: total pitches thrown (worthless if used by itself), pitches thrown per inning, pitches thrown per K and per BB, wild pitches, velocity changes over an inning/game, gameday temperature and weather, etc. There is no way PAP is anything more than a thrown together stat that people accepted just b/c there are a few injury prone guys at the top of the list. Prior and Wood are abused, but that comes more from the distribution of their pitches over the course of the game rather than the total number of pitches they throw. Throwing (pitches by inning) 35, 15, 15, 15, 10, 15 and throwing 10,10,10,15,10,15,10,15,10 both have the same PAP. What do you think is worse on a pitchers' arm?
  13. What opportunity? Nobody had the opportunity to get Mazzone out of Atlanta except his lifelong friend. Quit blaming Hendry for options that aren't available. Exactly. Mazzone wasn't leaving Atlanta except to work with his friend in Baltimore. His statements now and in the past make that perfectly clear. There are plenty of things to criticize Hendry on; this isn't one of them. It's ridiculous to even make the assertions here. we missed the opportunity to make a sales pitch (like the Yankees did). you never know what happens until you throw your hat in the ring. It's ridiculous to assume we don't have a chance without taking one. It would have cost us nothing to try. Wrong. We tick off Rothschild and, if he leaves, we have to find a pitching coach willing to take the position with a lame duck manager. The yanks are in a completely different position since they do not have a pitching coach. Hendry was wise to look before he leaped. Losing Rothschild would be a bad thing? LOL, I'd be happy to see any part of our coaching staff move on. We wouldn't have lost anything asking Mazzone, we might even have gained (by heaving Rothschild out the door).

  15. i'm just praying that moron doesn't get an extension. one more year is just about all i can take. i might have to give up baseball for a while and come back the minute he's shipped off.
  16. murton will probably start in LF. cedeno will have a starting IF position. ...unless we acquire some big name FA that we "have" to play in their places. those two guys are going to save us a bundle of cash to spend other places. Hendry isn't completely [expletive] (even if Baker is).
  17. Would someone please tell Dusty and company that speed doesn't generate the same number of runs OBP does. It's absolutely amazing to me that the Cubs put such crappy teams on the field with a $100M payroll...oh, wait, it's called overspending for the wrong commodities, like speed and team chemistry.
  18. What are the odds of the A's keeping Dotel? I don't think they're real good considering their budget. They can't afford to take a several million dollar gamble on Dotel, and teams like the Cubs can. We might actually have a decent shot at getting Dotel, unlike Giles.
  19. Yeah it would have been nice to see the CUbs at least try to get in on this but it would appear it wasn't just about money for Leo as he turned NY down. This is all purely my opinion but in addition I think it was either working with Perlozzo or staying put. He grew up in Maryland and has wanted to work with Perlozzo, who remains his best friend from childhood, for a long time. I don't think we had any shot at getting him. you don't have a shot if you won't even make a sales pitch to him (like NY did). i don't mind getting beaten out by other teams for players or coaches that hit the open market. that's the game. i do mind sitting on our arses waiting for a miracle to happen.
  20. We missed the opportunity to get the best pitching coach in the game. Sweet. This is going to be a disappointing offseason.
  21. i could give a crap about who manages the cubs, as long as the players in the lineup aren't left up to the manager's decision (neifi, macias, patterson, any vet that may start over a qualified prospect). the manager can screw up, but it's the GM that gives the manager the pieces to do the most damage to a ballclub. hendry, you suck.
  22. um what does that even mean? :? it's probably better that i don't know. team chemistry seems bogus to me. Bradley would be a vast improvement over CPat, and preferable to lofton, IMO. i'd rather have bradley in CF b/c it would mean keeping Pie in the minors for 1-2 years. Pie is all hype so far and has many things to work on.
  23. Lowe is a clubhouse problem? We'd better not be giving Murton to the Marlins in that deal.
