  1. you can always count on Baker to play the worst lineup possible.
  2. as long as there was no tongue, it's all good.
  3. he tied his own hands with the sammy video drama. no sympathy here, not after watching a 100 million dollar team put up a sub-.500 record. walk on water? hendry is treading water right now. one more '05 performance and we take off the floaties. so he should have brought sosa back?? That was a lost cause any which way. Some people are quite fickle. Some of the people blasting Hendry are the same one's who were advocating signing Beltran last offseason. That wouldn't panned out either. If anyone was saying, sign Pedro, or sign Jermaine Dye or sign Eckstein, then they should be entitled to gripe. He's not saying that Sosa should have been brought back, he's saying why let it be known that Sosa was caught on video tape leaving the final game if you were planning on trading him. That really tied Hendry's hands because it pretty much meant that Sammy had to be traded. didn't the media catch him? The media were informed by "unnamed team officials". they basically forced the trade with Sosa doing that...and dropped his stock in the process. i didn't want sosa back, but devaluing him more than he was already with a crappy '04 season wasn't the most brilliant decision in the world. we were essentially forced to take the black sticky stuff on the bottom of the trade barrel (ie the offer from Baltimore).
  4. I voted "nay." Hendry is typically a late trade GM. We have too many holes to play that game and he insists on overpaying for mediocre talent (Rusch, Neifi, etc.).
  5. i love Murton's plate discipline. his D could improve, but he's still better than Holly/Dubois defensively, so I can't complain too much. if murton can consistently display the power he showed at the end of this last season, we're going to have one heck of a player for the money.
  6. ManRam would only belong in the St. Louis locker room. MRam can play LF in Wrigley any time he wants to.

  8. having a manager that puts together a reasonable lineup is compensation enough for me.
  9. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=citadel-2_458676_260&prov=citadel&type=story noice!
  10. He started to lose it in game 4 of the NLCS. Then blew game 5. Then blew game 2 of the WS, then blew game 4 of the WS. So? Mariano Rivera wasn't so hot last October. Or October '01. Lidge is still an elite closer, but if the Astros fans demand that the team remove him, well, come on over. In all fairness, Lidge can't be mentioned in the same sentence with Rivera. Lidge is outstanding when he's "on" but I'd like to see how he bounces back from his poor postseason before inviting him into the clubhouse. self-contradiction.
  11. Wonder what Hendry has up his sleeve? On Walker: O boy. Bruce said we might bring Burnitz back at a lower price. For ****'s sake, Hendry. Why don't you put the same fricking sub-.500 team on the field next year and see if we make the playoffs. ](*,)
  12. it's funny that we hear all this talk about improving defensively and our GG caliber RFer is the first one shown the door. edit: of course we could always resign Burnitz at a lower price. :x
  13. when did anyone blame the injury on his age? :? i just said he was in good shape, even with his injury. :?
  14. it's called overpaying based on save percentage rather than stuff. not a smart move if you want consistent numbers...especially from an important piece like your closer. even a good player is a bad deal based on the money and years you give them. Dempster could have gotten much more than a 3/15 on the open market. Watch the contracts a lot of relivers get that had much worse seasons than Dempster and you will see what I mean. i guess it's not bad if you rate a pitcher based on save percentage. look at the man's WHIP and K/BB, not his ERA. his success won't last. wait till next season and you will see what I mean. :( Are you looking at his numbers just as a reliever, or his end of season stats? as a reliever compared to the other "dominant" closers in MLB. as a reliever (back of the envelop calculations): WHIP 1.23 K/BB 1.96 wagner (0.84 WHIP, 4.35 K/BB) ; ryan (1.14 WHIP, 3.85 K/BB) ; lidge (1.15 WHIP, 4.47 K/BB)

  16. dusty would try to make him into a leadoff hitter b/c he has speed.
  17. He's coming of TJ surgery, IIRC. His numbers before the injury were solid and he as much as admitted that he came back too fast. It's a risk to bring him back, but the numbers he's capable of make it a decent gamble, IMO.

  19. well, hendry is 2 for 4 so far (Williamson and Walker were solid moves and Dempster and Rusch weren't). he'd better improve his average.
  20. I agree OBP is more important then SLG but 3*OBP is a bit extreme. OBP*1.5 + SLG would be more of a "mainstream" view a player hitting value. I'm not saying Sanders is great but he's not that bad. no, sanders isn't that bad...he isn't that good either. he just doesn't have much other than power. when the power goes, his value will plummet. not having plate discipline will see to that (just ask Sammy Sosa). Sure, it's a risk, that's why he only costs like 3m. Not every player on a team is going to be prefect. But yeah, if I were the Cubs I would rather go with Murton in LF - Sanders can however play RF  he's a good fit for the cards. veteran player who puts up similar numbers year after year. i'm just waiting for the cliff. i'd rather have vets like him than holly, macias, and neifi. he's in great shape for his age (injury this year nonwithstanding).

  22. The had pretty good stats last year... .271/.340/.546 14 SB with 1 CS I hope the Cards resign him. Those are good stats for a corner outfielder? lol please keep him. Yes for his salary they're pretty good. I'm not quite sure what you're laughing about. An .886 OPS would have placed him right about 20th in the National League last year, 13th in the AL. It's better than Bobby Abreu, Cliff Floyd, Shawn Green, Luis Gonzalez, Jose Guillen, Carlos Lee, Hideki Matsui, Delluci, Mench, and many other quality corner outfielders. Elite? No. But well above average. I don't want Reggie Sanders, but it's ridiculous to suggest that those are poor stats for a corner outfielder. Old Man River can swing for the fences, i'll give you that. his SLG is nice, but OPS is overrated. counting SLG and OBP points the same is ridiculous. calculate 3*OBP + SLG and see where he ranks. doesn't look so good then, but i guess when you look at the wrong stats, anyone can look good. he's cheap? who cares. corner outfield spots are about production, not saving money. Right. I know I would rather pay $12M for an .886 OPS than $4M. Brilliant. You can think counting OBP and SLG the same is ridiculous if you want, but the OPS calculation isn't seen by most as "ridiculous." Obviously it's not perfect, but it gives you an idea that he was a pretty solid corner outfielder. When you look at the wrong stats anyone can look good? Who's to say you aren't looking at the wrong stats. The fact of the matter is he posted a stat line and said they were pretty good, which they were. You laughed at him, basically saying they were terrible for a corner outfielder, when they aren't. who's to say i'm not looking at the wrong stats? billy beane and paul depodesta. they've looked at far more relevant data than just about anyone. believe what you want. he posted a stat line that showed average BA, average OBP, and good slugging. that's supposed to impress me? :?

Yeah, I love that almost 3:1 K/BB ratio, the .340 OBP, and 93 games played this past year.
