  1. Yeah, I was wondering when you'd jump into the fray. Spending 10-14 hours a day onsite at a customer location where they track internet access tends to reduce one's posting a bit. :( no more porn for you. anyway, this offseason has been flat out ridiculous so far. we haven't made one solid move. either we've overpaid (Dempster, Eyre) or just flat out signed the wrong guys (Rusch, Neifi). Hey, at least Howry is a good arm.
  2. He's done that with relief pitching, but not all his acquisitions. Barrett and Ramirez weren't exactly at their peak when the Cubs acquired them. That said, relief pitching is probably the worst position to focus on when it comes to expensive free agents. Yup, and Hendry has said in the past that it is the toughest thing to figure out. so what does he do? throw money at it.
  3. :?: :-k What I mean is, it is possible that he will reject this offer and the Cubs will bid even higher for him, possibly giving him a completely absurd contract. Oh. Let's hope not. That will only happen if Hendry is the only bidder.
  4. Uh-oh. it's true though. the cards have right handed pitching depth, but that's about it. who needs a farm system when you can pull J. Rodriquez out of some unnamed orifice whenever you need to?
  5. Would you be so kind as to provide a link to the audio? it's in the beckett trade audio clip (main ESPN page, upper right corner). he just kind of throws it out there at the end like he wasn't really breaking a story. gammons said: "scott eyre has already gotten 11 million from the cubs. bobby howry is getting 12 million from the cubs."
  6. Ramirez's 2005 numbers bely his prospect ranking. If he were really the prospect he's been touted to be, why did the Red Sox waste $40m on Edgar Renteria when SS is Ramirez's natural position? b/c ramirez is several years away offensively. defensively he can play at a high major league level already. the bat is still coming around. he's all of 21.
  7. why are people saying the marlins got robbed? they didn't. they just got two top 75 prospects. ramirez is probably the top prospect in the sox org. and sanchez is just a little below papelbon and lester (3rd best pitcher in that org.). the marlins just got two cheap players who will likely produce very well at the major league level for bottom dollar. who knows what the PTBNL is, but it's probably not some scrub. when you take your payroll down that low, you need prospects who have a great chance of panning out, which they just got. beckett is good only if healthy. lowell is a financial anchor. the marlins aren't sending a ton of cash as they don't have it to give.
  8. i'm pretty much resigned to Hendry overspending in free agency, so at least we got a good pitcher (howry). *well, if these rumors are true.
  9. All Hendry wants now is a RHP, and I think Bob Howry tops his wish-list. After that he seems to be set, but who is the set up man? Williamson? I would guess Williamson or Novoa, but neither of them are locks. Novoa's control is suspect and who really knows if Williamson will return to his dominating self. Howry would be a good acquisition, IMO.
  10. I've probably missed it, but based on your stance on a couple other players, I have to ask... who exactly DO you want? Adam Dunn Wilkerson Bradley Marcus Giles Coco Crisp pitchers: zito/burnett/beckett (i.e. another front line starter) howry I realize we're probably not going to get any of these players. I just don't get the desire for Bradley. And I certainly wouldn't give up Pie for him. Abreu has a good arm...does Bradley? He can hit 40+ HR's...can Bradley? Bradley has speed, but there are plenty of other guys out there I'd rather have than Bradley. I would certainly give up Pie for Abreu, Dunn, Ichiro, M. Giles, Zito, Beckett, and maybe a few others. Bradley could be had for a used jockstrap right now. No one I know suggested we trade Pie for him. Bradley and Abreu don't play the same positions, cost the same in prospects and $ to acquire and keep on the payroll. i don't get the comparison between the two. I do like Abreu. Don't get me wrong, but we shouldn't trade our top position prospect for a 32 year old outfielder. I'd willingly trade pitching for Abreu b/c we have plenty of that in the pipeline, but I'm not sure Philly would accept that.
  11. I think you're underestimating how impressive a 903 OPS for a 20-year-old at AA is. Its a good job, and I don't think anyone is doubting his value. It seemed to me that DivineBovie was. Pie had a .900+ OPS in 240 ABs. Yeah, half a season, 59 games. Still a very impressive performance given his age and level. Impressive? Yes. But to count on him as the centerfielder of the future in Chicago? That's a little much for a good 1/2 of a season. He has value. No question about it. however, I think we overvalue him as our farm system doesn't have many upper tier position players.

  13. That's what common sense would suggest, but common sense doesn't resign Neifi Perez for $5M/2 years.
  14. I like the fact that Urlacher (2 tackles), Hillenmeyer, and Briggs were pretty much no shows b/c the D-line dominated all game long. Our LBs didn't play badly, but they didn't need to step up and make lots of plays b/c of all the pressure on Delhomme. The line forced those picks, got 8 sacks, and forced two fumbles. We could have had a couple more picks too.
  15. there is no such thing as a cant miss imo. his .903 ops in AA at 20 years old along with his gold glove fielding however is indicative of very good (if not great) things to come if he can improve his plate discipline. how many ABs did he have last year?

  17. the Marlins should make quite a haul off Beckett.
  18. He's going to learn English for one. Wow, it didn't look like they were going to sign him there for a while. Good pick up. There is certainly a benifit to being a west coast team or the Yankees when signing Japanese players.
  19. A career .300+ hitter, .400+ OBP and 900+ OPS and you don't want him? #-o He's going to be 32 next year. I'm not willing to trade our top prospects for someone who's about to hit the downhill of his career. I think he's definitely got a couple good/great seasons left, but if we're going to give away the cream of our farm system, let's at least get someone under the age of 30. Otherwise we just hurt ourselves in the future. He can't catch the ball either. Yes, I know some fools gave him a gold glove.
  20. Hendry has already said publicly that Wagner and Ryan are not on his radar screen. I don't think it was a smokescreen either.
