  1. Eh. Klinsmann isn't a great coach. Better than Arena? Yes. But he did what he was expected to do - get Germany to the World Cup finals. Sure they looked good, but they couldn't take a minute off because they were playing at home. Anything less than being in the final 4 would have been a huge disappointment. It's not exactly shocking to bring a team like Germany to the semifinals especially considering they were playing at home. I'm not saying Klinsmann isn't a good coach, I'm just saying that he isn't necessarily the savior for US soccer. Considering how pedestrian a team Germany looked coming in, I'd say Klinsi did a heck of a job getting them that far.
  2. That was a fantastic 2nd OT. Great shot by Grosso. The Player Formerly Known as Alessandro Del Piero even scored. Still, ITA lost to the US (I don't care what FIFA says. We won that game. The ref decided we lost) and might not have beaten Australia, and rolled over a weak Ukrainian side. Tonight, they caught Germany on a bad night when Podolski decided he wasn't going to finish any shots or complete any good passes. I hope Portgual or France demolish Italy. And I'll echo Raisin. Go get Klinsi, USSF.
  3. That's the point. They all need to go, because none of them have the skillset to actually build a contending team. There's no point in undertaking a rebuilding effort with this group. The path of least damage to the long term health of the organization would be to retool, unless there are changes at every level.
  4. But we needed to dump Corey's salary in order to resign Neifi...
  5. Two points: -The Cubs don't exactly have all that many attractive pieces with which to deal. Williamson, Walker and maybe Pierre. We're not talking about guys who are likely to fetch you a top prospect. I doubt Maddux approves any trade. Nevin might net an organizational prospect. Dempster probably nuked his trade value this week. If they decided to move Jones to NY, they might net something good, but that's about it. Moving Prior or Ramirez, aside from being a mistake IMO, would signal a massive rebuilding project, which leads me to my next point: -Do you really trust Jim Hendry and this coaching staff to choose the prospects you'd get in a fire sale, and then develop said prospects properly? They have an abysmal track record. I don't trust Hendry to handle a rebuilding process, and I sure as heck don't trust Baker to oversee one, especially if he's a lame duck. I have no faith in Hendry's ability to evaluate talent properly, and for that reason, this team is best served dumping the fringe players, keeping the core, and trying to retool in the offseason through FA and the trade market. Despite Hendry's terrible track record the last 2 winters, I have more faith in his ability to retool than rebuild.
  6. Don't forget his awesome free throw shooting. Yeah, and his rebounding and defense too. Is it at all a concern of yours that Wallace wanted an offense to run through him?
  7. You know the fastest way to get off the Cubs is to break ranks and be honest. Good for Williamson.
  8. Ronaldinho showed nothing in this World Cup. And the Brazilian press are rightly killing him for it. Even Fat Ronaldo played better than the Barca midfielder. France just took it right to Brazil. Great win for les Blues. And I've got to root for Portugal at this point.
  9. Lampard and Gerrard were terrible the entire tournament. England have a mental block when it comes to penalties. Christiano Ronaldo is a really, really good player.
  10. Her? I thought this individual was a poor guy. As if on cue, that guy just got hit in the groin by the ball. Not many Simpsons references for a World Cup thread unless you want to start screaming "HE HOLDS IT. HOLDS IT." Of course, it wasn't really that big of a deal. Mexico and Portgual did play during the Group Stage. Let's just say I made many a reference that day...
  11. I don't think Garnett is better than those 3 combined will be over the next few years. I don't get why there's a rush to ditch an effective rebuilding plan just to get a "name" player.
  12. The reason Wallace wants to leave Detroit is that he wants an offense to run through him. Would you want to run your offense through Ben Wallace?
  13. This is true, yet I've seen other managers, including Baker, bring a reliever in only to have him IBB the first guy he sees. Stupid move. Kyle Farnsworth in the NLCS, anyone?
  14. Meh on Ben Wallace. I'd like to see an Al Harrington, or maybe a combo of Pryzbilla and that other guy who's name I'm forgetting but he's a center and a FA and I think he was from Kentucky.
  15. You gotta give your veterans time to break out of slumps, man.
  16. You're crazy. England is incapable of winning a shootout. :P Care to make your predictions then? I was just kidding around. England have been bounced from a couple tournaments in the last few years on PK's. I think England, Brazil, Germany and Ukraine advance, with Germany and England meeting in the finals. I picked England to start, and I'm sticking with it until they give up a goal from the run of play.

I don't think the Bulls need an expensive "name" player in order to contend. I think the players they'd give up are worth more in the aggregate than Garnett would be.
  18. Good. It's about time they did something. They should give a red card to the ref that did the US-Italy game as well. Somehow both Merk and the Uruguayan are still there... :x

I hope he falls to the Bulls. He's a great shooter.
  20. I have a nasty feeling that if the team finishes anywhere near .500 that will be a "turnaround" and Baker will get his extension.
  21. How does Santo call people out? He gets all upset during the game and talks about problems in general, but then he takes a step back and says you can't blame Dusty, guys like Neifi are just great, everybody is trying their hardest. He'll talk about the need for change on one hand and then say nobody should be fired right after that. Agree 100%. Santo's criticisms are the ravings of someone who doesn't really realize why the team is bad.
  22. It was poorly constructed. But it should not be a .370 W% team. Dusty has gotten the worst possible results out of this group. They were never going to be a 90+ win team, but they should have been above the .500 mark, and even after all the injuries, should be able to flirt with the .500 mark. It was a horrible attempt to build a championship team, but this should not be approaching 20 games under .500. I don't disagree with you. However, they were in a position to build a championship caliber team. Maybe needing to make as many moves as the Cubs needed to make, asking them to be championship caliber might have been a tough sell, but they should at least be one of the better teams in baseball this year. Instead, they used a very poor approach on what areas they believed needed fixing and ignored the things that definitely needed fixing. I want Baker gone. But, MacPhail and Hendry need to go too, extension or not. The winter of 2004 was the tipping point. We had opportunities to sign impact OF's, good starting pitchers, and had prospects who still had value with which to work. Hendry did less than nothing that winter, feeling content to demolish Sosa's trade value and then trade him, and settle for a terrible LF situation and a bad RF'r. If I had my druthers, Hendry, Hughes, Rothschild, Clines, Pole and Matthews, and half the scouts would all be fired. But I know better, and I'd be shocked if Baker were not extended.
  23. I think Cedeno has performed well enough to thnk that he will continue to develop into a very solid everyday player. Can't see a reason for the Cubs to pursue, given Tejada's production of late and his salary, and the likely player cost of a deal.
