  1. That's not the only choice available. I'm going to go ahead and post Maddux's ERA and WHIP from last season as a Cub: April (5 starts): 1.35 ERA, 0.88 WHIP May (6 starts): 5.94 ERA, 1.69 WHIP June (5 starts): 6.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP July (6 starts): 5.21 ERA, 1.32 WHIP If that kind of production had any other name attached to it, you'd sceam bloody murder if Hendry signed that player. That's terrible, terrible production.
  2. I wouldn't. I'd rather put the 9 million to better use Yeah, same with me. If I thought Maddux was going to put up a 5 ERA next year, I wouldn't want to sign him. I don't think he will do that though at all. What about his 2006 Cubs season gives you the impression that he's going to put up an ERA near 4? He had a really good April, and was Shawn Estes-esque the next two and a half months.
  3. Padilla and Lilly will both be better in 2007 than Maddux will be. Westbrook, Lee and Jennings will be. Suppan will probably be. Marshall will be close. Guzman is a year stronger; he should have much better command on his change, which was his best pitch. The Miller/Prior combo will be better. There's no reason to spend any signifigant money on a guy who will put up back end numbers in the rotation, regardless of the warm fuzzy feelings Cubs fans get for him.
  4. -He had a 4.20 ERA overall, and a 4.69 ERA with the Cubs. That's bad. He won't be worth whatever he costs. That's not bad, that's average. He puts up similar numbers to the free agent pitchers not named Zito or Schmidt, and they all are asking for 8-10 million dollars. Do you think Maddux will sign for more than that? I doubt it. Zito and Schmidt are asking for around $12-15m per. I'd guess Maddux could get at least $6m or $7m. He's not worth that. Regarding his ERA, if you take out April he had a Cub ERA well over 5. He was terrible for us. Why would you want him back when better options for a back end rotation guy are available via trade, FA or in house?
  5. -200 bad innings isn't anything special -20 HR's allowed, 14 of which came with us, and not in cavernous Dodger Stadium -He had a 4.20 ERA overall, and a 4.69 ERA with the Cubs. That's bad. -His intelligence can't make up for deteriorating stuff -A great fielding P isn't that valuable. -Who cares how professional he is -He never looked like he was in shape during his recent 2.5 years here. He put up respectable numbers playing for a team with a pitcher's park in a division full of pitchers parks. The NL Central is full of hitters parks. He won't be worth whatever he costs.
  6. And in 20 of those starts he's going to blow up and be terrible. I could care less about his clubhouse rep. It's one of the most overrated aspects of baseball. There's no reason to repeat past mistakes. He's no better than a 5th starter, and if we're going to bring in a guy who's simply going to take the ball every 5th day, we have about 5 guys who can be 5th starters and "take the ball every 5th day" at a fraction of the cost. Do we have 5 guys who could perform to his level? All of his statistics still stack up well with the other pitchers on the market. We were talking about Meche a week ago, and Maddux would likely be a great deal better than Meche for the next 1-2 seasons. Maddux is still a pitcher who will give you slightly above average production, which is rare for pitchers in this market. Depending on the cost, why not sign him for 1-2 years, and then we can grab a pitcher when a better market establishes, rather than signing another average pitcher now for 3-5 years? He not above average. He's barely average. And I want no part of Meche, either. There are options out there to trade for a picther. There's no reason to sign mediocrity for the sake of it. Maddux is mediocre. I have no doubt than we can find mediocre for less.

  8. Because it's awesome to see a guy have every start over a 3 month period be a total disaster.
  9. God, I cannot stand Rozner's man-love for Maddux. The Cubs need to forget who Greg Maddux is.
  10. That's sadly debatable. North is actually a much better interviewer. Both have idiotic opinions, and both go on nonsensical rants, but Murphy interviewing someone is a waste of time.
  11. I'll repeat: Leadoff Hitter Is Not A Position.
  12. Repeat after me: Leadoff hitter is not a position.
  13. I didn't think so. He was standing behind a podium the whole time. Was Boers literally there? Aramis has chubby cheeks. Always has, always will. Maybe Boers was ripping on that. Any noteworthy comments made after the radio coverage cut away? Interesting questions? Hustle references? Clutch concerns? No. Weird press conference. I guess they just wanted to show Aramis some love.

  15. Boers has been on ARam since 2004 when ARam flipped his bat after a HR.
  16. WSCR cut away. For those watching, does Ramirez really look out of shape?
  17. Yeah, that was kind of tacky. Aramis saying all the right things.
  18. -Age 28-33 is a hitters prime; Aramis is going to become a "great player" over the length of this deal. -Has gratitude to Aramis for coming back. Aramis talking now
  19. -Well on their way to a winner, wanted to keep the in house guys they "terribly wanted to keep" -Aramis made a big decision to come back. JH and ARam have good relationship -Once ARam signed, it became much easier to sell FA's on Chicago. -Lee and Aramis are key to the team.
  20. I listen to murph during lunch soley on the fact to pass the time. The one thing I like about him is he lets callers talk most of the time so its nice to hear general oppinions of random fans and compare them to mine and on this board. Plus he does love Bill James! :) He loves James and Dewaan, but doesn't apply any of their info into his opinions on players. He uses conventional wisdom to support knee jerk opinions. He hates Ramirez despite mountains of evidence that he's productive, citing 2 below average months as reasons Aramis shouldn't have been retained, inoring the other 18 enormously productive months he'd had.
  21. "When are you handing out #21?" And murph wonders why no one comes on his show... what does that even mean? God, I love how leaving early the last game of a lost season erased every other good thing about Sosa's tenure here. Not for everyone, but Murph personally doesn't like him and he's got the microphone Murph is an idiot. He hates everyone. I haven't heard him make a coherent or valid argument in 4 years at least.

  23. Murphy is a waste of a timeslot. A complete waste.
  24. What's the over/under on hustle questions? Am I just a paranoid tinfoil hat wearing wacko who is slightly suspicious at all this, like they're really going to announce his deal fell through or something?
