  1. I really don't know what Beane would be after within our system, but one could look at players we might be underselling/valuing and go from there. Pie and Hill come to mind. Marshall, maybe Veal and Colvin as well.
  2. Greg Maddux would be a complete waste of whatever we would send to them. I'd rather have Marquis in the 5th spot than watch Maddux get shelled in start after start, with an occasional 6IP 3ER start in between the beatings. He's gone. Let him go.
  3. Jesus, does that cross end up hurting your shoulder after a while?
  4. All they've said is that LaPorta is in, that's it. Well...we all knew that Milwaukee had the ammo to outbid us if they felt like doing so. This is what happens when your minor league system struggles for an extended period of time.
  5. Spain was definetly the better team. Good on them. Germany looked bad. Phillip Lahm in particular was abused over the past two games, badly. His winner against Turkey masked an awful, awful performance otherwise, and Torres just flat beat him to the ball on the goal. However, the officiating for a Cup Final was rubbish. Ballack should have been sent off a couple times, and I'm still not sure what the call was on the foul in Spain's 18 in the 90th or so minute.
  6. Why put your best hitter 5th? I'm sure there's a reason but I can't think of it...
  7. Not that I think Hendry would ever, ever do it, but Bonds would come here to be a spot starter/pinch hitter in a heartbeat. He wants a ring, and we have a chance to win one.
  8. BTW, I totally called the US coming out in a 4-6-0. Jesus Bob Bradley needs to be fired. My kingdom for Hiddink. Or even Ruud Gullit.
  9. Good on Spain for knocking the Italian National Diving Team out. Now they can get ready for the Olympic 200m highboard events. I'm kind of pulling for a Russia/Germany final, if only for the off the field symbolism that matchup would create. The crowd would be absolutely electric. Congrats to the quasi USMNT that went and beat the Fun Ship Cruise All-Stars 1-0 in the most boring irritating game I've ever watched. Cricket camera angles don't work for soccer.
  10. It's the dutch. It's typical. Tomorrow, the quarter finals against Russia. Russia is no joke. I think they have more than a small chance in that game. If anyone will know how to play the Dutch, it'll be Guus. Thank you...thank you very much ladies and germs. Dude, I can't believe for a second the USSF wouldn't give control up.
  11. great use of bees knees, that's jake. robben needed to see the pitch, but van basten used his subs fairly early in the 2nd half. robben is a game changer and a total waste to have him rot on the bench. I think part of why Bouhlarouz was taken off was that his daughter died today or yesterday, and he was just done. I'm sure tactically that didn't help. Still, his choice of subs was dubios. Kuyt should have come off for Robben.
  12. Hiddink outclassed and outcoahced Van Basten today. Simple as that. He made the Dutch chase his side, which prior to actually seeing it I would have called impossible. Arshavin owned that field, and outplayed Sniejder-by a lot. That guy was off all day. RVD was good, but the Dutch midfield got owned and when Hiddink adapted to the Dutch tactics they never responded. Why leave Robben on the bench? Robin van Persie got smacked around the pitch like an 8 year old girl from the second he stepped onto the field. That game proves the difference a top class coach can make. Russia's roster isn't all that better than ours is, but their coach is the bees knees.
  13. Russia was the better team for 95% of the match. I can't believe how poorly the Dutch played.
  14. Huh? Blanton would be very effective in Wrigley. He's a groundball pitcher
  15. Could you people please stop spoiling the results of Euro 2008 games?
  16. I think Bob Bradley looks at this tie as a way to perfect his ideal lineup: A 4-6-0. Imagine how effective the empty bucket would be with 4 useless center mids! For reals, though, it's going to be nice to see Adu, Sacha and Szetela hopefully feature. And if Chad Barrett gets an international goal I'm going to laugh so damn hard.
  17. Good for Boca. Sacha's goal celebration last night was quality as well. I'm still kinda miffed at Not Spain losing yesterday to the Fusswehr. And I'm also annoyed at Soccer Jesus' babbling about wanting to spurn Man U-who stood by his petulant self when all of England and Wayne Rooney wanted him dead-to go play for the dramabomb known as Real Madrid. If I were SAF I'd ask for $125m pounds, Robinho and 6 hot chicks.
  18. On the plus side, did you see SK's goal? Good stuff. Good stuff.
  19. Still, it was a great match to watch. Oh, no doubt. Portugal have a lot of talent, but their defense is (obviously) not so great. Their best players are pretty young, still.
  20. It's fine. The result was somewhat predictable. Germany has lots of giant tall men in attack, and Portugal has lots of little men in defense, and an idiot of a keeper.
  21. Dammit all, I had been avoiding the soccer thread because I tivo'd the game.
  22. Both. They are both obnoxious. The latter is far more pathetic, but they are both obnoxious. "Helping to draw a card" may be smart, but it's a negative aspect of the game. I like watching games, and one of my hopes is to attend one in Europe. It can get a little dull in the lagging time when the ball just seems to get punted back and forth, but I enjoy watching it. I sucked playing it as a kid, but my high school was decent and the football team used to watch them play. It's an enjoyable atmosphere. I just find the whole "drawing a card" thing really obnoxious. It's the same with any diving that takes place in hockey (which I think is far less frequent and also more difficult to differentiate, since they are flying around on ice) and basketball (which I really don't enjoy much at all). There are other reasons to do it besides drawing a card, too. I've stayed down to break up momentum in a game when our defense needed to regroup, or to give someone on the field a break. Having played at a fairly high level-not OMC playing AA ball level or anything, but high level nontheless-it just becomes part of the culture of the game. There are times when it's somewhat necessary. I can say personally I've never pulled an Azzurri and faked a head injury to try and draw a card, though.
