  1. Again, my whole point in the nefi argument, is defense counts at critical positon. Mike Lewis undersold this argument in Moneyball. Bill James is well aware and values defense more and feels quantification is at an all time high , for example will carroll lauded nefis defense this year. He is not an all star  However his misplacement in the lineup was not his fault he delivered a solid year. Defense and pitching will beat good hitting every time . That and a varity of offense will be necessary , because no team save the yankees has a stud ops guy at every positon , you would have to sacrifice defense. Ask the yankees if they wish they had a cf this morning. Its not easy shaping a roster, thats why its dangerous to not look at different values in players. I too realize the top of the order needs a huge obp boost , but i know we need to pitch and defend better to have a chance at the big prize. God Bless the new bleachers
  2. By the way Nefi had very comprable numbers to cabrera and better than everett, also uribe did not have a high on base. 3 of the final 4 teams have low on base excellent defending shorstops who by the way had excellent risp totals . I believe contact guys have a chance to do so. Regardless of obp. Again nefi took way to much crap on this board. You win with pitching it beat big hitting again. Our pitching has got to get pushed back up to 2003 levels. Obviously i would not cry to see a couple more on base type guys added. But no Nomar at short , he is not up to par defensively. That is a big deal. God Bless and go Bulls
  3. Wins are important, some guy with a 7 plus era and 20 wins is highly unlikely. Maddux however is a guy highly dependent on balls in play as he has gotten older. His great low walk ratio allows him to still be and excellent pitcher. He gives up more home runs than before because of a slight loss of command and in my opioion is not given the same edge on the corner pitches he and glavine used to recieve . That being said he still amazes me. He takes the ball every start (see wood and prior) . Keeps his team in the game almost every time. His era is also slighty higher because they econmize his innings. so runs against fewer innings pitched will hurt his era more. He has been worth the money in alot of ways. The cubs would have in no way been able to guarntee the production he has brought from younger pitchers. God Bless Murton
  4. Thats why i said a blend of procuring talent is best. However the more statistical analasys available the better likelihood of a hit in my opionion. i would never eliminate a venue of talent flow (high school , latin, asia etc. However the cubs have got to increase their % of positional development. God Bless OPS.
  5. I totally concur with the thought process on our poor positional drafts. Some have to do with our emphasis on high ceiling high school kids. (montanez, harvey, patterson, dunston, ) as opposed to some of the college kids with a longer track record and greater sample sizes to determine plate discipline among other factors. Grace, Carter, Palimero . I know a blend of talent , is needed. I just think a better job could be done and it is one of the cubs biggest issues. God Bless those in the south without homes
  6. moneyball was a great and enlighting read, however one of the missteps it made was making art howe in particular and managers in general look like trained chimps to the glorious buildup of billy beane. Baseball has a great way of policing its self in terms of managers. If you dont win enough and sometimes even if you do , you get canned. So please stop with the i could manage this roster to 90 wins. This is a flawed roster. injuries and crappy pitching starting and relief have lead to where we are at as a team. No leadoff hitter and poor choices for lf to begin the year. I understand how hard it is to makeover and aging and expensive roster. and the role getting rid of sammy had in this. I believe all parties deserve another year to bring everything along. MacPhail , hendry and baker , the scouts and minorleague people share credit when it goes well and blame when it does not. I get frustrated with dusty speak also. But he gets the players to play hard. Fixating on Nefi and dusty ignores the problem of improving at level and smacks of scapgoating .It takes mature rational analysis to fix problems . Im glad im not in charge. Thats their job and they will lose it , if it does not eventually get done. God Bless and i hope the red head can pull the ball to go with the great plate discipline.
  7. I agree with points from both gooney and cpatt. I would like to see a greater infusion of youth but need to see players that can help at the ml .level. We have some strong core pieces. Lee Rameriz , likey Barrett. But we cant fill the rest of the wholes with minor leaguers at this juncture. I will keenly follow the prep for murton, cedeno and Pie along with CPatt, Sooner or later my friends we will hit it on some positonal prospects. But the system needs to address greater devlop. and improve scouting , not just say we major in pitching and can trade it for offense. Pitching has not had the depth we needed this year , though with hill possibly nolasco, pinto we could help that quickly. God Bless and Pick it Ronny C
  8. I do think one of Dustys weakness's is a lack of creativity in offensive lineups . I dont think he is a raving boog in this area , as he is more dogmatic in his perception of the importance of continuity in defense and developing roles. That being said we are offensively challenged and getting more so with injuries. How this plays out in his lineups will be interesting to follow and provide some thought provocation for sure. God Bless and give us some cool temps in central cal.
  9. Its a fine line giving kids a chance and keeping your total team going . As a coach you have to give the feeling to the whole roster , that they count vet and rookie. I am the first to admit i get excited by the new sports car(rookie) part of that is the hope for the potential . However most players not just managers want the proven commidity . Especially the young studs on the mound. This being said its up the GM to shape the roster for the manager and balance if possible (based on economics ) this to help the manager. I get frustrated with Baker also in this area, but not as much as i do the orginization for shaping a better roster. God Bless and i appreciate your oppionion
  10. Point number 1 comparing choi , hill and patterson to holla, karros , etc is not the point . I want valid lasting players not a complaint fest of how screwed our enormous postitional talent gets. 2. Hendry ripped off florida and Pitt. with judicious trades at a perfect time. We were fine at first with karros and at 2nd with Grudz and now have to younger players from the trades. The talent to stay has to improve . Patterson has digressed and has got to play every moment. I pray that Cedeno , Pie , Harvery even guys like Giavani Soto (strong on defense and obp) can contribute. I am a farm system guy at heart. But teams have to have talent that produces and the positional talent for the cubs has not met that criteria yet. More work needed on develop. at minor level , more avenues of talent explored (international scouting) and better evaluatory tools , lets get some more players who already have the start of a clue in the area of plate discipline. God Bless and OPS
  11. No doubt, expectations are at an all time high (i am as guilty as the next guy) I am beggining to realize the people at the top have to be as bold as they are steady. hungry , while not losing the big picture. Not easy to do. But a job they must embrace with fervor as well as lip service. The current management at all levels has both success and failure to live with and in. You either get better or you get worse, you never stay the same. Great players have great expectations themselves and dont lose their belief that they will get their, regardless of the surrounding circumstances. God Bless their efforts.
  12. Good Point UK, as i talked about develp. I men the crappy work in latin america and i agree they have had spurts and seemed to back away. MacPhail and Hendry have preached the importance of a great system. They have talked the talk now walk the walk on all levels of building a system. God Bless and give me a on base power machine like of for christmas
  13. bingo, procurement and coaching the talent you procure are critical elements in consistant talent flow. Baseball because of its extensive sub system (minor league ball) even more so. The cubs have to find ways to improve in those ares. They have traditionally stunk in the latin market. better recently , but an area for huge talent at a bargain rate compared with the draft. There is a program called digiswing on the net , run by one of my friends that isolates swing mechanics visually against major league comparisons and simplifys some elements. Providing a fundemental base to work from. Maybe some innovative ideas that allow for development of both difficult skills (plate dicsipline) and other easier to aquire elements of the game could help the cubs. I dont know . I do know they have to improve in those areas to be successful. God Bless and MVLee
  14. I concur with dalgreen and the facts back up the lack of postitional prospects panning for the cubs. I have been a fan for years and its been while since a legit big league all star caliber player has come out of their system . The dallas green regime had more success in this endevor. Dunston Grace, wilkens Girardi, Joe carter, mell hall , Raphel Palimero. The current bunch stinks compared to that group. Choi, Hill , Dubois , Patterson, have all yet to show they are better than decent players. That may yet occur but the best bet we have in terms of rediness is from another orginization. Pitching is another story , as is Hendrys ability to sell off at the right time. Lee and Rameriz trades. I hold out hope for cedeno and pie . Though along with Harvey , they appear more toolsy than plate disciplined. God Bless and Go Cubs
  15. As a longtime high school and small college coach. Im not worried about what Dusty says. I dont here many players complain about him.A lot bigger sign than most. He spouts some interesting verbage at times. (not his strength) But at the end of the day sports tend to play themselves out as they should. I dont have a clue if he will be back after next year. I know that hendry needs to put together a strong off season. The good thing about this year is the cubs can evaluate more realisticly their core.Potential may in woods and pattersons case may be on its last legs. Pitching depth and offense can and should be addressed. Much more important to me than griping about nefi or dusty . There is plenty of blame to share for this season. I still love being a cub fan and am raising three beautiful daughters to love our team. They help me keep my intensity in check. It s fun to debate the running of the team. I think the book moneyball created some interesting perspectives in a lot of fans minds. But again there are no absolutes in sports especially baseball. You can only try to read into accumlated data from many sources to make the best decisions and adjusments that you can. God Bless your days cub fans
  16. Thanks for the welcome. I have loved this site for the past couple of years. It has been a great source of info for a lifelong fan. I am actually a huge farm system apologist and tend to support the use of younger talent. But a mix of players based on production is best. It does seem the cubs have had a difficult time producing talent that sticks in the field. The system has produced trade talent (LEE, Aram) I like what i have seen of Cedeno, i remember a lot of people , hammering him on the board two years ago for being put on the 40 man. Again i believe he will get his chance , unless they procure a ss (frucal). I think nefi has done a solid job . considering he was not brought in to start. God Bless ya all
  17. I think the hate spewed for nefi is missplaced anger. He is way more than adequete as a fielder , i have watched him play every game this year. Great arm , sure hands , good range. He obviously lacks plate discipline, much like Jeff Francour, his slugging though allows his OPS to sit in 6th or 7th position in the NL. For a backup and underpriced athlete , he has done his job. He is not a top of the order guy. The angels who are in first have a player who is having a very similar year Cabrera. Pitching has been the cub problem all year. Quit the hate on a solid backup, who has stepped up. And get the cubs some healthy consistant pitching. Obviously the cubs need to improve their offense in the outfield and short if possible. Have a great day fellow faithful Baby Bruin followers. Our day will come
