  1. The pitch count has stayed low, too. Pretty good start, he just needs a few runs aka a miracle for a win
  2. But IMO they were comically bad, so I could laugh, this team doesn't provide any entertaining or redeemin g feature. They are boring and bad. 2001 was pretty hopeful at times, but when you got Matt Stairs and Ron Coomer anchoring your corner infield spots and Fred McGriff would rather play for TB than the Cubs, you couldn't help but laugh a little.
  3. I think as he ages he's going to have longer and longer streaks like this. Last year was pretty great for him in that he put together a great run after his slow start. That was probably the best we'll see of him again. I'd love to see Adrian Gonzalez in town at some point, even if it means playing Nady, Lee on a 1 year deal (unlikely) or some temporary FA there next year.
  4. Yeah, I think we can see the problem with using base stealing efficiency as a yardstick for speed. Base stealing is a lot more of a learned skill that is developed over time, and for a young player like Castro, the SB #s may not be incredibly indicative of his raw talent. Given what we saw, he could turn out to be a basestealer if he works on it, but for now we can settle on extremely fast on the basepaths, able to go first to third and stretch doubles into triples.
  5. September callup would mean no risk of burning an option. July/August callup would keep that risk to a minimum. Early May callup means we've got an entire season of worrying what Lou will do with him. Early May callup after getting swept by the Pirates moving well under .500 and 5 games out of 1st puts a lot of expectation on him to be the savior. If he's handled properly, though, he could help turn this team around if he hits well. My expectations aren't real high for this year, but if he's ready to contribute – which, while opinions are split on whether he should have been called up, most seem to feel he can produce at this level – then this speeds up his development. I agree there's risk involved in this move, but I don't agree with assuming awful handling any more than I agree with assuming great handling. The move in and of itself is fine to me. Now it's important that Lou uses Starlin well. We'll have to wait and see if he does, though. Well I just think that's naive on your part. The Cubs suck at this. Why wouldn't you assume poor handling? Well based on that there is not going to ever be a good time to bring up Castro. We got one with Soto two years ago, getting another hitting prospect within 10 years is going to be asking a lot. and Colvin's 50 at bats are REALLY pushing our luck
  6. You forgot 'lack of a third pitch'. I think he is much more of a relief prospect and a mediocre SP prospect You're reading an old scouting report. If by reading you mean remembering, then you are correct. So, is it the changeup that he developed?
  7. Not only would they demote Wells, which is dumb in and of itself, but they wouldn't use Zambrano to replace him? What a [expletive] bunch of people we have running this organization. Holy hell, this sounds dumb. That is all kinds of stupid, Zambrano in the pen, Cashner starting and Wells/Gorz demoted. Great.

  9. Read the second-to-last paragraph. Fangraphs seems to think that Theriot is some sort of god on defense. More just that they follow the UZR metric. Theriot has been pretty consistently above average in it over the years. While I'm not so quick to think he's a great defender, I think he's well positioned and doesn't make too many mistakes which makes up for his arm/range a bit, and moving to 2nd would nullify his arm disadvantage, leading one to believe the team defense would get better as a result.
  10. I think you grossly overestimate the average Cubs fan. They've heard all about him for 6+ months now, and if he's not good soon, they are going to feel they were sold a bill of goods. The good news is he'll put the bat on the ball and the average cubs fan can cheer for him since he didn't strikeout like a failure. Remember how Neifi was pretty immune from boos?
  11. Fangraphs take on it http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/castro-called-to-cubs/
  12. How so? Both were top prospects with high celings (supposedly). Both were rushed to the majors well before they were ready, and both fizzled out and became completely worthless in the short span of a few seasons. This is following the same pattern. I don't see how it's out of line to expect the same result. Castro strikes out about half as much as either of those guys and actually earned this promotion rather than promoting Pie or Patterson when they weren't really dominating.
  13. I dont think there's any way Castro hits under .260 this year, so there may not be as much pressure to bench him as with Patterson/Pie.
  14. Andrus career minors .275/.343/.361 20% K rate Castro career minors .310/.362/.421 11% K rate Andrus also saw a fairly low BABIP compared to his minors numbers, which is to be expected when jumping levels, but may indicate a little bit of bad luck last year. Let's not delude ourselves too much, but expectations along the line of Andrus may be a bit conservative.
  15. I get the mindset, and I think it's unjustifiably aggressive. I think with Ramirez struggling and his contract expiring, management would like to see how Vitters handles AA with a pretty significant sample. Aramis' contract only expires if he opts out. The Cubs can also opt out (mutual option). So, there's still a decision to be made and a big sample from Vitters at AA will be helpful in making that decision.

  17. If he goes .270/.325/.350 at age 20, i highly doubt the cubs will give him the Pie Treatment. He's being brought up knowing how raw he is at age 20, i doubt the cubs are bringing him up on a short leash. They know this kid still needs time to develop. I think the Cubs have the right hitting coach in place with Jaramillo and the right vets around him. Also with the discrepancy in K rates, Castro will probably 'look' a lot better if he struggles, putting the ball in play, moving runners, etc, while Pie walked straight back to the dugout really really often.
  18. Dave Kaplan confirms on Twitter and says Tracy to minors
  19. I'd say the one the Castro has going for him that a lot of others haven't is a very low K rate (something like 10% this year and not much higher over his career). Compare that with Pie (19%) and Patterson (19%). Castro might not walk a lot yet, but he has been able to put the bat on the ball so far in his career
  20. Why are you surprised that they would move Theriot? He still starts, and it's not like he's a SS to begin with. Theriot's also got a .400 BABIP this year compared to a career .324. He can do his .300/.360/.380 thing pretty consistently, he's just not going to be overwhelmingly good without getting lucky.
  21. Either 2 or 7 in front of Soto. Even though he has a great K rate, putting him 8 might not be the best idea.
  22. My guess is Baker. Tracy bats left handed and second base just got really crowded with the Riot moving over (presumably).
  23. So, basically we are swapping Fontebaker with Castro? I don't see how this improves the team unless Castro somehow replicates his #s through 100 ABs in AA. Could we see a Baker release and then a Fontenot/Theriot platoon now?
  24. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/37017632/ns/sports-player_news/ Stumbled upon this as I was looking up his most recent stats. Interesting move, smells of desperation. Right now I can't find a second source on this.
