  1. FYI, rotoworld:
  2. That's classic
  3. Haha, Mitre is making the Astros look silly. Ensberg and Wilson flailing at pitches. I hope he keeps it up. Yesterday's 1-0 games makes me mad in light of this showing by Houston. The run they scored lastnight was on a wild pitch; their offense is anemic. I wouldn't have minded a 0-2 start for the Astros. Now its 8-0 Marlins
  4. Me too. and another off day Thursday! Brilliant schedule makers! Surely the Cubs are gassed after playing one game in a row! They surely won't need those off days in August! I hate the early days off too but to be fair to the schedule makers, an off-day following Opening Day is to accommodate inclimate weather that might PPD the game and make playing on the "off day" a necessity. I think playing Cincy is also important in the equation. They have the oldest franchise so MLB seems to make sure they have no problems with getting in the first game (without a need for a double header).
  5. I don't think that's the point. He's still better than Konerko so expect his contract to be in that neighborhood. The Cubs don't want him to become a FA and have other teams attempt to drive up the price. I'm sure some teams would be very willing to overpay so the Cubs will want to be generous without breaking the bank. The best time to do that is now. But Konerko won a world series so he's clutch or something. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see Lee get a lesser contract than Konerko. I haven't read the rest of the comments but I assume you're joking. Oh yeah, DLee has also won a WS (just not with the Cubs). Lee's contract will be the same or greater than Konerko's (my bet is it will be more). If it's more, I'm guessing it won't be as a Cub. Not necessarily. I wasn't implying that it would be much more. I believe Koneko's deal was 5/60 so something in the neighborhood of 13M/year is probably in order. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs went 5 years.

  7. The one dimension you speak of was the SLG. The reason all those homeruns didn't lead to a lot of runs is because of the bottom of the barrel ranking in walks, which led to pathetic levels of OBP. The Cubs feasted of power, but starved for baserunners. To make the offense better, they need to get more baserunners while minimizing the reduction in power. I agree, and never made any assertion to the contrary. My first comment in this thread was about how speed lead to an increase in OBP for this particular game. Let's be honest, a number of the hits were of the infield variety. Pierre, Murton, Cedeno, Perez, and Pagan put pressure on the defenders by out running many of the INF arms. It also caused an error because the 3B hurried his throw to 1B.
  8. same thing happened last year on opening day, and people were saying the same thing. yeah, it'd be great if the cubs could single their way to 17 hits every game, but it ain't gonna happen. Last year more runs were scored via the homerun. That was the point moreso than the 18 hits. I might be mistaken on this, but I think I'm correct when I say that the White Sox scored a higher percentage of their runs off of homers than the Cubs did last year. I think they did pretty well, too. I don't know if that is true or not, with respect to the Sox, but I do know that the Cubs feast or famine offense didn't do much for them. Over 40% of the Cubs runs were scored via the homerun. The offense was one dimensional. Similarly, the Reds lead the league in power and the most homeruns were hit at GABP yet, they were unable to score enough runs consistently to make up for their poor pitching staff. The Cubs pitching is seemingly lacking (especially early in the season) so the hitters will need to have more ways to score. There will be many days this month that the ball won't leave the park. It is nice to have other options.

  11. I'm not certain about his pitch count but it was well pitched on both sides. The only run scored on a WP. The Marlins young pitchers (and JoeBo) were impressive. Of course, Houston still has a weak offense.
  12. Does anyone else see how slim Joe Borowski is? I almost didn't recognize him on the mound for the Marlins.
  13. I'm watching Houston and the Marlins on DirecTV and I haven't seen any prompts about subscribing. Maybe it's because I'm watching the actual MLB channel (742) for this game and not a free channel. Then again, I don't know that DirecTV offers a free week.
  14. Yeah, but one could argue that speed played alot into the OBP because a fair number of the important hits were the infield variety. Speed also caused the MI to rush throws which lead to at least one error and a number of dropped balls that couldn't be fielded (which became INF Hits). It was definitely a lot different than recent Cubs offenses. Only 3 of the 16 runs came via a homerun. There were lots of hits and a few sacs.
  15. I just started wearing mine again last week.
  16. Didn't you know that everybody plays on Dusty's teams.
  17. Jimmy Rollins extends his streak with a hard double
  18. The 1 HR is the part that I like the most. I agree. Last year it was homerun or bust.
  19. I have to admit, speed has really changed this offense. Of course, part of the problem is the Reds defenders but they are all hurrying their throws because they know the guys are fast.
  20. This game feels closer than 5 runs especially in that park.
