FUBAR Well, we'll have to figure things out. IMB and I were at the draft, Dobson showed up after about 2-3 rounds. But Flames didn't do any preranking, Mark, Dobson, and Play Pie excluded all keepers, so they drafted "free" guys in the first 3 rounds when they should have been drafting their own keepers, so after 3 rounds, IMB and I started drafting keepers still on the board. So we have to figure out where to go from here. We can scrap it all and redraft (but those that prerank have to do it right - make your keepers your top 3 picks and exclude everyone else's) or try to make trades to work things out. Right now Flames is loaded b/c he drafted everyone's keepers, whereas Mark and PlayPie didn't draft any of the top 25 or so guys. On the other hand, Mark, Play Pie, and Dobson shouldn't get their keepers and all of their top "free" picks, since they drafted guys in the first few rounds when 4 of us were drafting our keepers. Anyway, thoughts on how to fix this? Given how much trouble the draft was, I'd prefer trading to fix it, but that might be a headache too. I'm open to ideas.

I get the feeling that every offseason I'm going to be reminded of how much it annoys me that we're paying Soriano so much to play LF. I'd love to add Crawford with some young pitching and use the money we're paying Soriano (plus more) to sign ARod or trade for Tejada or whatever. Any scenario that would allow Murton & Pie to be cheap sources of solid production. As it is, if we acquire Crawford, we might as well trade Murton for pitching b/c it makes little sense to have either Pie or Murton in AAA or on the bench at the beginning of next year. Both have established all they can in AAA and need starting gigs, either here or elsewhere. If we go into next year with Murton as a role player and end up trading him at his lowest value point, I'm going to be even more pissed at Jim. -
I realize the Sox didn't exactly get what they were hoping for, in terms of power production, out of Drew. But they won the WS with him and his .373 OBP in the lineup. Like last year, I think Drew would be a great fit for the Cubs (esp if he could play CF) - I wanted him more than Soriano. But I don't see the Sox eager to deal that OBP for Jones and Marquis. Maybe they take Murton for him, but I'm not really sure I'd want to do that deal (why add all the extra salary for the same OPS, even if Drew is "proven") and I don't know that Theo is going to want to either. What's the benefit to the Sox of having Jones and his 5 HR and .335 OBP replace JD Drew?

Can others let me know if this time works for them. Most of you have been pretty quiet, so I don't know if I'm to assume the time works, it doesn't, or you just don't care. I don't really want to have a "life draft" if I'm the only one that shows up.

I'm not all for moving Murton, as I'd much rather put him in RF and see what he could do, but I do agree that if we're going to trade him, it should be for a bigger improvement. I have to imagine some GM values Murton more than Hendry apparently does. I'm not sure that Baltimore for Tejada really matches up, but maybe there's a 3rd team that could put Murton in a corner OF spot and give Baltimore something that would net us Tejada (not that we'd only give up Murton, but that he'd be a key piece). Of course, if we trade Murton, we have to fill RF with something. And an OF of Soriano, Pie, and Jones doesn't look that appetizing to me. I'd be ok w/ just adding Peralta, but not for Murton.

Play Pie was able to prerank this morning, but I had already changed the draft time last night. I've sent a few emails to the league trying to keep everyone up to date on the draft, but I haven't seen any responses, either here, via email or on the message board at the Y! page. Can everyone who's in this league let me know if Monday afternoon works at all. At some point, I'm just going to schedule the darn draft and we'll just have to go with it. But if 2:00 Eastern Monday is bad for everyone, I'll try rescheduling again.

Mets for those of you who weren't -14 in 1969. Sadly, the realignment has all but killed that once incredibly heated rivalry. It was close to Cubs/Cards levels at one time. aye, I hated the Mets much more than the Cards growing up yup

As much as I like him, I don't mind trading Murton to improve the offense. But if trading Murton to improve RF means keeping Theriot at SS, it better be a huge upgrade in RF.

And Murton and Soto. Jones can be 4th OF or traded - no need to platoon in RF and limit Murton's playing time that much.

Actually, that quote is the caption to the picture - probably not written by Silver. He mentions later in the article that Floyd could possibly come back. And, I agree with him that we have enough OFs. If we can significantly improve at SS (Tejada, ARod, ?), I'm ok with Soto, Pie, and Murton at C, CF, and RF. If a big improvement is available, adding an OF would be good, but I'd be more concerned if we replaced Murton and ran Theriot back out there for 150 games than vice versa.

Excluded players: Here's the list of excluded players. Please make each of these guys (except your team's 3 keepers) "Excluded" in Y!, so that you don't draft them if for whatever reason you can't make the draft. I'd prefer for everyone to go into their pre-rankings and put every other team's keepers in the "Exclude Players" list. My understanding is players on the Exclude Players list won't be drafted at all by your team. Also make your keepers your top 3 picks in your list of My Players. So the real draft won't start until Round 4. If someone forgets and doesn't do that, I have the ability to edit rosters, but it's going to throw off that team's draft (any maybe other team's drafts). Another option is to do a draft "online" but not on Y! (via email or nsbb at a designated time). I can then enter the results of the draft on Y!. But that's going to be difficult to do as I can't do a draft during evenings/nights and I imagine most people can't commit to doing a draft during the day Monday through Friday. So that leaves us this Sunday morning/afternoon as the earliest time and some probably can't make it then either. I'm open to other ideas, but I'd like to get this thing done ASAP.

I just checked Y! If we want the draft Sunday, it has to be at 10 am EDT. Otherwise, we can do basically anytime any day after that. Apparently all other times this weekend are booked. 10 am/9 am on Sunday work? I'd really like to get this thing done before we get another week into the season.

Alright, we'll just have the 2 new guys pick either Wolf's or Truffle's team. PlayPie - pick a number between 1 & 10 to decide who gets to pick a team first. cheapseats picked 5, so pick a different number. Everyone - let's schedule an online draft, since this is taking forever. I propose Sunday, during the afternoon (I'm pretty flexible). Please remember that early Sunday morning is daylight savings, so remember that for the draft. Does 2:30 EDT work for everyone?

Tigers trade for Renteria

Exactly - when you draft and develop talent, you can trade some of those prospects away for pieces that are scarce on the market to fill a need. The Tigers are in contend mode and needed to get Guillen to 1B (or get a much better 1B and let Guillen DH). They needed a SS, don't have ML-ready talent at SS and the market didn't have a bunch. So they traded from organizational depth (young SP and young CF) to fill a hole. Sure, in 5 years, these kids might turn out to be great for Atlanta. But they weren't going to play in Detroit in the next 5 years with Grandy and Maybin and all of their young starters. So they're more valuable to Atlanta than they are to Detroit. And the opposite is true for Renteria (move valuable to Detroit than Atlanta). This is just a solid trade by two teams that matched-up pretty well. My problem with JH, is when we trade organizational depth (like 3 young SPs a few years ago), we don't acquire a solid player that fills a need, we acquire Juan "43" Pierre. Renteria may not put up great numbers, but they need solid D and a good OBP from him. If he can do that, this was a good chance to take. It's not like they had a lot of other options. -

DLee, that's it. If you mean, will he match his RBI and R totals? Who knows - those are team dependent. But if you mean, will he hit 40-50 HRs with an OPS of .900-1.000 (probably closer to the higher end) while feasting on the NLC pitching? I'd say it's pretty likely. Even if his D at SS gives up a few runs a year compared to the average guy, his offense more than makes up for it. Oh, and if signing ARod means Lee moves up to 2nd, it's completely possible that he'd match his RBI totals. If Soriano can bounce back to a .350-ish OBP (not a given by any means) or DeRosa or Murton can lead-off and put up a .350-ish OBP and Lee and his near-.400 OBP hits 2nd, that's a lot of base runners for Mr. Rodriguez in the 3-hole. And with ARam and maybe Soriano hitting behind him, he'll have lots of chances to score 150 runs. I'm not sure if it was Neyer or not. He's made some mistakes and he's pretty good at owning up to them (see Reyes, Jose). But if one mistake (or even two) means you don't have a clue, all posters on this board, and about 99% of the people on the planet, are complete morons (myself included). We're sure that's the standard we want to employ?

Well...keepers probably won't be done by today. Crap. Ok, to keep things moving, in case I don't check back in at the right time, cheapseats and PlayPie - I'm going to pick a number between 1 and 10 (I'll PM Mark_R the number). The closest one gets first pick in the 3-round "mini-draft" to get you guys caught up. It'll be a snake draft (1-2-2-1). Once IMB and Dobson name their keepers (or before, if you don't want any of their players), just post your picks in this thread. Once those guys are done, we'll figure out how we're doing the main draft. I have the number selected, so you can each post your guess and I'll let you know who goes first (and PM you both so you know).
